Deformation of rhyolite lava crust associated with intermittent inner flow of lava: palaeomagnetic evidence

A palaeomagnetic study has been conducted to examine the deformation of thick crusts of rhyolite lava while its inner portions continue to flow. The Sanukayama rhyolite lava, which erupted in the Pleistocene in Kozushima Island, Japan, was chosen as the investigation site because of its well-exposed vertical lithofacies variations classified into three distinct zones (pumiceous, obsidian and crystalline). The targets of this study are the pumiceous and obsidian zones, which constitute the crust of the lava. Thermal demagnetization reveals three remanent magnetization components from the pumiceous and obsidian samples but only a single magnetization component from the inner crystalline rhyolite samples. Alternating field demagnetization is ineffective in isolating the magnetization components in the pumiceous and obsidian samples. The multiple components of remanent magnetization of the crust are interpreted to have been acquired during cooling as thermoremanent magnetizations. We suspect intermittent lava transport of the inner portions, the primary mode of rhyolite lava advancement, to be responsible for the presence of multiple components in pumice and obsidian of the lava crust. When the inner portions of the lava retain mobility to flow out of the crust, the solidified crust of the lava surface below the magnetite Curie temperature remains susceptible to deformation. Analysis of palaeomagnetic directions from the crust allows the deformation of the crust to be described in terms of rotation. Although the mode of rhyolite lava advancement is not well understood, because of its infrequent occurrence, our observations offer an important insight on how the mobile part of the lava is associated with the deformation of the crust during continued lava advance

In the seventh five-year plan of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition, a group of Japanese scientists (led by the National Institute of Polar Research) together with a group of Swedish scientists, conducted field surveys to better understand the glaciology of the ice sheet in Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica, during the 2007/2008 austral summer season. This paper reports on the planning and field preparations, and outlines the scientific achievements of the field expedition. We have gained numerous new scientific insights on the spatio-temporal distribution of the ice sheet environment in the inland plateau. Here, we provide an overview of the new knowledge gained

Novel Fluorescence-Based Method To Characterize the Antioxidative Effects of Food Metabolites on Lipid Droplets in Cultured Hepatocytes

A fluorescence microscopic method for characterizing size, quantity, and oxidation of lipid droplets (LDs) in HepG2 cells was developed. LDs were induced by palmitic (PA), oleic (OA), or linoleic acids (LA) and stained with two fluorescent probes for neutral lipids and lipid peroxides. Each fatty acid increased the number of LDs and oxidized LDs (oxLDs) and the degree of LD oxidation time dependently, as well as increased intracellular triglyceride hydroperoxides. LDs induced by LA without 2,2′-azobis(2-amidinopropane)dihydrochloride (AAPH) showed the most significant oxidation degree over PA and OA, especially in large LDs (area ≥ 3 μm2, oxLD/LD = 52.3 ± 21.7%). Under this condition, two food-derived antioxidants were evaluated, and both of them significantly improved the LD characteristics. Moreover, chlorogenic acid reduced the quantity of large LDs by 74.0–87.6% in a dose-dependent manner. The proposed method provides a new approach to evaluate the effect of dietary antioxidants on LD characteristics

Treatment strategy for lymph node metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma using an ICG navigation system: a case report

Abstract Background Since indocyanine green (ICG) accumulates selectively in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, it can be used to detect metastatic lesions. Lymph node metastasis of HCC is rarely observed, both simultaneously and metachronously. Therefore, it is sometimes difficult to identify metachronous lymph nodes during salvage surgery because of prior surgery. Herein, we report a case in which lymph node metastasis of HCC was successfully resected using an ICG navigation system. Case presentation The patient was a 62-year-old man who had undergone radical liver resection for HCC 8 years ago. During surveillance, contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a mass in the hepatic hilum. Various diagnostic modalities suggested that the patient had a solitary metastatic lymph node of HCC, and extirpation of the tumor was planned. Intraoperative ICG fluorescence imaging allowed surgeons to clearly identify the target lesion. Histopathologically, the tumor was confirmed to be a lymph node metastasis of HCC. The patient’s postoperative course was uneventful, and he remains alive without recurrence 2 years after the second surgery. Conclusion Intraoperative navigation surgery by ICG fluorescence imaging was useful for the safe resection of extrahepatic metastasis of HCC in a complicated situation
