INTRODUCTION: It has been reported that Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) producing gastric cancers have a worse prognosis than those not producing. We aimed to investigate gastric cancers patients in regards of AFP producing cancers incidence and pathological variables of those not producing AFP. METHODS: Patients who had diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma and hospitalized in general surgery ward for operation were enrolled to the study. Study was designed to collect data of gastric cancer patients in a prospective manner between dates 2014-2015 in Dursun Odabaş Health Center. Patients' blood samples were collected before and after surgery for analyzing AFP. The relation between serum levels of AFP and histopathological variables were analyzed. RESULTS: Totally 63 cases were evaluated. Increased AFP level was observed in 2 cases (incidence=3.17%). Serum AFPs were 1.520 ng/mL and 0.590 ng/mL in preoperative and postoperative period respectively (p<0.001). There were no relation between preoperative AFP levels and tumor stage and neurovascular invasion status. We observed that the correlation between preoperative AFP levels and number of metastatic lymph node was not significant (spearman's rho=-0.183, p=0.157). According to tumor location, there was significant difference in AFP levels (p=0.021). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: AFP producing gastric cancers is rare between patients who referred to our center. Tumor stage and AFP levels seems unrelated. Distally located gastric cancers cases should be evaluated cautiously in patients whose AFP levels are in normal range

Sports which starts from childhood has got a big importance for the adults who will have responsibility in the society to gain good habits and establish healthy relations both between individuals and societies. Guiding students for sports activities at childhood is effective to help them gain good habits. It is a must to make a vast research in the field of sport to raise sport and athlete to the place they deserve in society. To enable an athlete to be successful, the factors affecting him/her in negative ways should be eliminated. Either affecting child’s sports and personality development negatively during basic education period or even not affecting them determines his/her success borders in the future. From the sociological perspective, first family then school is important institutions to provide sports success. The aim of this research is to present the effect of school and family on sporting activities for sport students in primary schools. In this study a descriptive survey model is applied to detect the present situation. A poll has been carried out for the purpose of getting datum Girl – Boy athlete students who still do different sports activities in their elementary education (4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th grades) constitute the group of research. Five hundred students participated in the survey answering the poll which has got 20 questions. Descrpitive statistics of the research, frequencies and percentiles, have been calculated by using SPSS 15.0 (Statistical Packet for the Social Science). According to the results of the present study, it has been determined that the level of parents’ education and family income, the existence of a sportsman in family and attitude of the family towards sport affect child's doing sports; especially family's interest in sports affects positively students' sports activities. In addition to these, physical education activities in elementary education, application of these activities, sports environment of students and interest level to the athlete students give a direction to their sport interest. The lack of sports equipments and inefficiency of sports facilities at primary schools discourages students from sports whereas the positive attitude of the school towards sports raises their interest in sport.

Endoscopic biliary stents have been recently applied with increasing frequency as a palliative and curable method in several benign and malignant diseases. As a reminder, although most of the migrated stents pass through the intestinal tract without symptoms, a small portion can lead to complications. Herein, we present a case of intestinal perforation caused by a biliary stent in the hernia of a patient with a rarely encountered incarcerated incisional hernia

Colon cancer presented with sigmoid volvulus: A case report

Introduction: Sigmoid volvulus is the most prevalent type of colonic volvulus. Colon cancer is seen less where sigmoid volvulus is common, so it is rare to see that colon cancer is synchronous with sigmoid volvulus. Presentation of case: We would like to present a case of sigmoid volvulus caused by colon cancer in a male patient aged 80 who was referred to the hospital with toxaemic shock presentation. Discussion: Sigmoid cancer can be presented as sigmoid volvulus to the emergency department. In intestinal obstruction early diagnosis is of crucial importance. Computarized tomography is a diagnosis tool that should be preferred both in the diagnosis of obstruction and in detecting its cause, localisation, degree and complications. Conclusion: When surgery is performed due to the urgent colonic obstruction in colonic volvulus diagnosed patients, a colon tumour should be considered in the same column loops or in the distal colon. We believe that CT is the method that should be preferred in large-bowel obstruction suspected patients

In this study, our aim was to determine the possible effects of Helicobacter pylori (HP), chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), and gastrointestinal metaplasia (GIM) on survival in operated bowel type gastric cancer patients (INT-GC). Among 548 patients, 347(63.3%) were male. The median age was 57 years. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were significantly shorter in patients with GIM than those in patients without GIM (log rank, P = 0.003 and log rank P = 0.003, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that presence of GIM (HR, 2.1) was found to be an independent factor of worse DFS. In our study, stage pIII patients with GIM had significantly shorter DFS and OS than those without GIM (log rank p = 0.008 and log rank p = 0.001, respectively). However, in subgroup analysis of patients with GIM, there was no significant DFS and OS difference between patients with stage pI and pII disease (log rank p = 0.999, log rank p = 0.184 vs. log rank p = 0.409, log rank p = 0.281, respectively)

Bronchogenic cyst mimicking an adrenal mass in the retroperitoneal region: Report of a rare case

    No full text
We report the surgical excision of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst that presented as a nonfunctioning left adrenal mass in a 25-year-old woman with continuous pain in the left flank. Preoperative biochemical testing confirmed that the mass was nonfunctional. Bronchogenic cysts are mostly benign congenital abnormalities that originate from the remnants of the primitive foregut and typically occur in the lung. Subdiaphragmatic and especially, retroperitoneal locations are rare. Despite the rarity of this pathologic entity, bronchogenic cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of retroperitoneal cystic lesions. Diagnosis must be definitively confirmed by histology

Introduction: In this study, we aimed to examine the relation between pre-treatment 18F-FDG PET/CT metabolic parameters [(including the maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), and tumor lesion glycolysis (TLG)] and treatment response and survival in locally-advanced Esophageal Squamous Cell Cancer (ESCC) treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT). Methods: A total 76 patients with locally-advanced ESCC who received dCRT between June 2015 and December 2019 were included in this retrospective study. Patients were divided into two groups as complete response (CR) or non-complete response (Non-CR) according to response to treatment. AUC was obtained as 0.749 (p 12cm3 in 41(54%) patients. Median follow-up time was 14.5 months. In patients with MTV > 12cm3, median progression-free survival(mPFS) and median overall survival(mOS) were 9 months and 11 months, respectively, whereas mPFS and OS could not be reached in those with MTV & LE;12 cm3 (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). In patients with non-CR, mPFS and mOS were 8 months and 9 months, respectively, whereas mPFS and OS could not be reached in patients with CR (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). In multivariate analysis, age (odds ratio [OR], 1.07), ECOG PS (OR, 11.1), and MTV (OR, 4.73) were found to be the factors affecting treatment response. Conclusion: In our study, treatment response and MTV were found to be the factors associated with survival in patients treated with dCRT, showing the pre-treatment MTV value as a predictor of treatment response
