The study is dealing with the evolution and the current patterns on marriage and family formation in Greece, as well as the related young population matters, by analyzing the demographic trends during the Post World War II, the temporary attitudes and behavior, especially of young people and the socio-economic factors associated with these trends. To meet these tasks, secondary and survey data are employed, demographic indicators are constructed and descriptive plus non parametric statistics are used. The similarities and differences across Europe are identified as Greece is partly following the southeastern demographic pattern and attitudes towards marriage and family formation, but also the particularities even from the other Mediterranean-Southern countries. The demographic and attitudinal differences among societies are due to the different time period that each of these passed through the certain phases of social and economic transformations.peer-reviewe

The scope of the paper is to investigate the basic factors of development worldwide By following factor analysis six variables that we consider of high importance for the overall development of nations namely the level of income per capita the degree of human development the extent of government effectiveness the level of perceived corruption the range of political rights and the extent of civil liberties are found to be integrated into two basic factors of development the socioeconomic factor and the political factor The socioeconomic factor comprises the level of income per capita the degree of human development the extent of government effectiveness and the level of perceived corruption while the political factor comprises the range of political rights and the extent of civil liberties Our analysis unveils that both these factors are of crucial importance for the overall development of countries Based on these two factors or criteria of development our empirical work in the form of cluster analysis distinguishes four groups of countries that we describe and discuss in length The basic conclusion that emerges from our cluster analysis is that although an effective strategy towards overall development demands integrated policies that incorporate both the socioeconomic and the political dimensions of development most countries worldwide have not achieve both of the

Suburbanization: A Post World War II Phenomenon in the Athens Metropolitan Area, Greece

This article studies the phases of urban development in Athens, the biggest metropolitan center of the country, in combination with the development of the Greek economy during the post world war II era, by applying techniques suggested by the theory of spatial cycle. Before application, an extended reference to the theoretical background will be presented, so that a comprehensive view of the spatial cycle hypothesis is established. Ã short historical analysis of the Greek economy will also be provided, so that the impact of several historical factors on the recent evolution of Athens Metropolitan Area be better understood. Since the beginning of the post-war period, the Athens Metropolitan Area has been going through a certain phase, i.e. the phase of suburbanization. Recently (1981-2001) the afore-mentioned area has shifted from the first stage of this phase to the second, i.e. from relative to absolute decentralization, facing not only a complete loss of core city population but also memorisation, unemployment and other depressive phenomena. As differences among western, southern or northern suburbs appear, an intra-suburb analysis will be carried out in order to identify the direction of urban evolution through time. The recent decline in the development of suburbs, in juxtaposition with the rapid emergence of some independent urban areas outside the Athens Metropolitan Area, provides some evidence of potential movement towards the next phase of disurbanization in the near future.

The extent of unemployment constitutes one of the most basic indicators of sustainable development and particularly in the field of socioeconomic development, given that the extended unemployment, especially of the youth, cannot be considered to be compromising with the concept of sustainable development, as it restricts the possibilities of an important part of society to satisfy its needs, in the present and in the future too. Labor, when using the linear regression analysis, defines the relations between regional and national employment and unemployment in Greece, in order to reveal the reactions of each of the 13 regions of the country to the national trends for a period of 16 years, between 1998 and 2013. The differentiations that are revealed are considered crucial in the implementation of a regional strategy against unemployment, in order to achieve better prospects of economic development, to reduce the unemployment rate of each particular area and to implement an integrated strategy of sustainable development of the country

Social capital has been recognised as an important factor for the development of local communities and relevant literature review has associated high levels of trust with economic and local development. The present article explores one of the two basic dimensions of social capital, social trust (the other being civic participation) and its association with demographic variables, such as gender, age, educational level and income as predictors of development. A study was conducted in the municipality of Kalloni, Lesbos Greece, where social trust levels were measured among 302 inhabitants. Findings revealed that educational level and income are strong predictors of social trust, with better educated and better paid individuals showing higher probabilities of being trusting towards other people
