Two Dermoid Cysts Developing in An Accessory Ovary and An Eutopic Ovary

    Get PDF
Accessory ovary is a rare gynecologic condition, and tumors arising in accessory ovaries are extremely rare. Accessory ovary may result from separation of migrating ovaries during embryogenesis and injuries such as inflammation and operation on normal ovary. Congenital malformations, most frequently malformations of the genitourinary organ, are seen in connection with the accessory ovary. We experienced the first case of two dermoid cysts developing in an accessory ovary located in the left infundibulopelvic ligament and another in the eutopic ovary at the same side concurrently. Here, we present this extremely rare case with a review of the literature

Abstract

Introduction

Ectopic ovarian tissue is an unusual entity, especially if it is an isolated finding thought to be of embryological origin.

Case presentation

An 11-year-old, morbidly obese female presented with left flank pain, nausea, and irregular menses. Various diagnostic procedures suggested a large ovarian cyst, and surgical resection was performed.

Conclusion

Histologically, the resected mass was not of tubal origin as suspected, but a serous cystadenoma arising from ovarian tissue. The patient's two normal, eutopic ovaries were completely uninvolved and unaffected. A tumor arising from ectopic ovarian tissue of embryological origin seems the most likely explanation. We suggest refining the descriptive nomenclature so as to more precisely characterize the various presentations of ovarian ectopia.</p

The role of laparoscopy in the management of the infertility patient.

    Get PDF
Laparoscopy has traditionally been used only as a diagnostic step in the evaluation of the infertility patient. With the advent of more sophisticated instrumentation including the use of laser surgery, laparoscopic procedures can now be performed instead of conventional laparotomy. Lysis of pelvic adhesions as well as treatment of endometrial implants and endometriomas are now routine laparoscopic procedures with improvement in pregnancy rates comparable to microsurgery. New advances in instrumentation will increase the pregnancy rate following laparoscopic tubal surgery as well as laparoscopic assisted in Vitro Fertilization, and will also increase the safety of this procedure

Blindness associated with a cerebral lesion has been described as cortical blindness. This is the first reported case in which computerized tomography has documented cerebral edema to be the cause of cortical blindness in a preeclamptic patient

The incidence of meconium-aspiration in Hawaii.

    Get PDF
Meconium in the amniotic fluid was found in 2,633 obstetrical patients and meconium-aspiration occurred in 77 cases out of 14,527 deliveries. Although the incidence of meconium in the amniotic fluid increased significantly at 39 weeks, a corresponding significant increase in meconium-aspiration did not occur until 41 weeks gestation. All deaths associated with meconium, as well as 84% of the cases of severe meconium-aspiration syndrome, occurred in infants born of patients with oligohydramnios and a gestational age of 41 weeks or greater
