Although undigested materials are often swallowed by children, most of them pass through the gastrointestinal tract spontaneously. Rarely, ingested foreign bodies can be trapped inside the appendix and then usually are not able to return to intestinal passage. In these cases, prophylactic appendectomy is recommended to prevent appendicitis and related complications. Here we presented 11-monthold female patient whose examination of abdominal x-ray was revealed metallic foreign body stopped at the right lower quadrant. At laparotomy, the foreign body was found to be lodged inside the appendix and removed by appendectomy.Çocuklar tarafından sindirilmeyen cisimler sıkça yutulsa da, bunların çoğu gastrointestinal sistemden kendiliğinden geçer.

Effect of progesterone on DPPC membrane: Evidence for lateral phase separation and inverse action in lipid dynamics

    No full text
Interactions of progesterone with zwitterionic dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) triultilamellar liposomes were investigated as a function of temperature and progesterone concentration by using three non-invasive techniques namely Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, turbidity at 440 nm, and differential scanning calorimetry. The results reveal that progesterone changes the physical properties of DPPC bilayers by decreasing the main phase-transition temperature, abolishing the pre-transition, broadening the phase-transition profile, disordering the system both in gel and liquid crystalline phase, increasing the dynamics at low concentrations whereas stabilizing the membrane at high concentrations, and inducing phase separation. Progesterone does not change the hydration of the C=O groups, while it strengthens the hydrogen bonding between the PO (2) over bar groups of lipids and the water molecules around. Concentration dependent different action of progesterone on the order, dynamics and hydration states of the head group of dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine membrane

Interactions of progesterone with zwitterionic dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) multilamellar liposomes (MLVs) were investigated as a function of progesterone concentration at selected temperatures monitoring both the gel and liquid crystalline phase, by using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It has been show that the effect of progesterone on membrane dynamics is dependent on progesterone concentration. At 1 mol%, which is close to physiological level, progesterone behaves differently. At this concentration the decrease in dynamics is more noticeable. Additionally a dramatic decrease in the strength of hydrogen bonding in the interfacial region of the bilayer is also observed. When concentration increases up to 12 mol% opposite behaviour is observed at all interactions. Above 12 mol%, progesterone–DPPC interactions shows almost linear plot.Publisher's Versio

Importance of the Ultrasonography in Diagnosis of Ileal Duplication Cyst

Gastrointestinal duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies that can be seen in anywhere of the gastrointestinal system from the mouth to the anus. These are prenatally diagnosed through antenatal ultrasonography. However, attention must be paid since these formations might be confused with ovarian or mesenteric cysts. Our patient, who had been diagnosed with ovarian cyst on the ultrasonography performed in another center and with mesenteric cyst based on the abdominal MRI carried out at fifth month of life, presented to our clinic with the only complaint of constipation at 9th month of life. The diagnosis was set through double wall appearance of duplication cyst on the abdominal ultrasonography. The patient’s cyst was resected

Transient Osteoporosis of the Hip: A Case Report - Case Report

Transient osteoporosis is a process in which peri-articuler osteoporosis occurs, with cartilage remaining intact. A painful disease, it is more common in males than females, may be migratory and is self-limited, with complete resolution of symptoms and all imaging findings. Characterized by pain and functional limitation mainly affecting weight-bearing joints of the lower limbs. Routine laboratory investigations are unremarkable. Middle aged men and women during the last months of pregnancy or in the immediate post-partum period are principally affected. Diagnosis is made upon clinical presentation and x-ray evidence of diffuse osteopenia in the affected bone area followed by spontaneous healing after several months. Magnetic resonance imaging and techneticum-99 bone scan may be helpful in diagnosis especially in early phase of the disease. In this case report 41 year old male patient who had transient osteoporosis of the hip was evaluated in the light of relevant literature. (From the World of Osteoporosis 2007;13:19-22

Anaesthetic management of a patient with hereditary angioedema

    No full text
Hereditary angioedema is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by reduced activity of the C1 esterase inhibitor. Patients with hereditary angioedema are clinically characterized by recurrent episodes of swelling of the extremities, face, trunk, airways and abdominal organs. Attacks may occur either spontaneously or following trauma, stress, surgery, infections and hormonal fluctuations. The most common cause of death is asphyxia related to laryngeal edema. Giving C1 esterase inhibitor is the most effective method of treatment. Also fresh frozen plasma, androgen steroids, quinine pathway inhibitors, antifibrinolytics and bradykinin receptor antagonists can be used as treatment. In this paper, the anesthetic management of a patient with hereditary angioedema undergoing inguinal hernia repair surgery is reported

Temperature influence on the dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholyne - Model membranes studied by FTIR

    No full text
Lyotropic liquid crystals are realized from certain concentration of amphiphilic molecules, such as phospholipids, in water. The specific interactions in which water is involved are very important for model-membrane stability. Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholyne (DPPC) model membranes have been studied by FTIR technique at different temperatures in the spectral range {2500 - 4000} cm(-1). A Gaussian deconvolution has been performed in order to study the water behaviour from the point of view of hydrogen-bond formation between water molecules and both the hydrophilic heads of phospholipids and the components of buffer solution. This study contributes to the understanding the mechanisms which assure the model membrane stability
