    Physical Activity in Forest and Psychological Health Benefits: A Field Experiment with Young Polish Adults

    Recently, many studies have been conducted on the impact of various elements of the natural environment, including forests, on human physical and mental health. However, little is known about the level of health benefits resulting from contact with forests depending on the type of physical activity undertaken. Therefore, in order to measure the impact of physical activity on the level of mental relaxation, a randomized experiment was conducted, which took into account three types of human physical activity: walking, cycling, and passive (without movement) observation of the forest. The study was carried out in the same forest and at the same time. Forty young people studying in Warsaw took part in the study. Four psychological questionnaires were used in the project before and after the experiment (Profile of Mood States, Schedule of Positive and Negative Affects, Recovery Scale, Subjective Vitality Scale). A pre-test was also performed in a university classroom. Research has shown that staying in the forest, regardless of the type of physical activity, brings positive health benefits in the form of an increase in positive feelings while reducing negative feelings. The results indicate that people who walk have the broadest range of benefits (cumulative benefits), in the form of less tension, reduced anger, fatigue, depression, increased concentration and greater vigor. Cyclists experienced significant benefits only in the form of reduced depression and greater vigor. The group passively observing the forest achieved statistically significant benefits only in terms of reducing fatigue and improving concentration. However, overall, the between-group results showed no statistically significant differences between the restorative effects of walking, cycling, and viewing the forest landscape. Each analyzed form of contact with the forest has a regenerating/regenerating effect (ROS scale) and contributes to the increase in vitality (SVS scale)

    INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) has become the primary procedure for long-term enteral nutrition of most, but not all patients with dysphagia. Still in some patients gastrostomy may only be performed with open surgical technique (SG). Finally, in some patients due to relative contraindications to both methods, surgeons have to choose one of them. AIM: To compare PEG with SG in terms of effectiveness and safety. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 612 patients with dysphagia, who underwent PEG (573) or SG (39) was conducted. Authors analysed effectiveness of PEG and SG procedures as well as the type, frequency and treatment methods of complications classified according to Clavien-Dindo Classification. RESULTS: The rate of all complications was significantly lower for PEG than for SG and a significant effect of the treatment type on the probability of serious complications was observed – notably lower after PEG (OR = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.05–0.8, p = 0.02). The 30-day mortality rate was 1.74% for PEG and 0% for SG. PEG patients who required laparotomy were over 30 times more likely to die than others. No significant effect of the nutrition status on the probability of serious complications was observed (OR = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.51–1.34, p = 0.46). CONCLUSIONS: A significant effect of the treatment type on the probability of serious complications was confirmed. This result was robust to the preoperative patients’ nutrition status which was found to be insignificant. A lower risk of postoperative complications, a relatively easy procedure make PEG a procedure of choice in patients with dysphagia

    Validation of a Modified QuEChERS Method for the Determination of Selected Organochlorine Compounds in Honey

    Honey is considered to be a health-promoting food product. Therefore, it is assumed that it should be free of contaminants. Although the use of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) was banned a few decades ago in developed countries, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are still detected in various environmental and biological matrices, including food. These contaminants exhibit toxic properties and bioaccumulate in some food chains. The validation of a modified QuEChERS extraction method was successfully performed for o,p’-DDT, o,p’-DDE, o,p’-DDD, p,p’-DDT, p,p’-DDE, p,p’-DDD, heptachlor and dieldrin. 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexachlorobiphenyl (PCB 153) was used as an internal standard. The modification involved changing the solvent from acetonitrile to n-hexane after extraction. Quantitation was carried out using gas chromatography with an electron capture detector (µECD). The mean recovery values for o,p’-DDT, o,p’-DDE, o,p’-DDD, p,p’-DDT, p,p’-DDE, p,p’-DDD and dieldrin, spiked at 2.9 ng/g and 20 ng/g, ranged from 64.7% to 129.3%, and, for heptachlor spiked at 5.6 ng/g and 20 ng/g, ranged from 68.0% to 88.3%. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for these concentrations did not exceed 20%, and the within-laboratory reproducibility was below 20%, except o,p’-DDE and p,p’-DDT, which were 25.2% and 20.7%, respectively.     Consumer Risk Assessment Associated with Intake of Pesticide Residues in Food of Plant Origin from the Retail Market in Poland

    <div><p>ABSTRACT</p><p>The aim of this study was to characterize short- and long-term risk for consumers associated with dietary intake of pesticide residues in fruits, vegetables, and other foodstuffs available on the Polish market based on 2010–2013 official surveillance results. Among 779 samples collected from 2010 to 2013 no pesticide residue was found in 39.7% samples while 58.5% contained residues at or below the EU Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs). Non-compliances (residues above the respective MRLs) were found in 14 samples (1.8%). Most of the estimated daily intakes were well below 1% of respective acceptable daily intake (ADI) values. The highest intake for children and adults was about 7% and 1.5% of ADI, respectively. For non-compliant results acute risk was characterized. Predicted short-term intakes for children and adults ranged from 0.7% to 425%, and from 0.2% to 100% of respective acute reference dose, respectively. Results of chronic risk characterization show that consumers in Poland are adequately protected; however, incidental cases where residue levels may potentially pose a threat to consumers’ health due to acute exposure cannot be excluded.</p></div
