The process of art is meticulous, becoming richer in layers as time passes. When art and the body come together, they immediately magnify an existence long before assemblage. I want to question predetermined existence through the use of found material. How the use of appropriation in art-making challenges patterns and creates a moment of change. Objects exist only from years of meditation, but we can quickly reconsider their function through intentionality. I’m specifically focusing on relearning form, shape, and color after crossing the gender divide. How the ability to assert inclusion in time and space is symbolized by the transformation of objects. My materials are collected through this lens and everyday collaboration between environment & self. How can design create a celebration of liberal individuality.https://digitalcommons.murraystate.edu/art399/1054/thumbnail.jp

Androgynous Mothers and Social Discomforts, Part B

The sun is our grandest mother. No one really knows who our greatest grandmother is anyway. But we know that they rose and fell each day, just like our view of the sun. But some days, their lights completely disappear. Those days, dark clouds come carrying storms and rain always finds its way down. Other days our skin smolders with how bright the shine. Bright she burns, so bright we burn. I think that this heat will never slow down. What I mean is, I’m a grounded space cadet. I’m extremely fascinated by the act of bewildering. I want to be a gardener when I grow up but I’ve never been able to keep my plants alive for long so I gift them before they go downhill. I love the sound of a pomegranate breaking open. I don’t mind that growing up in Western Kentucky has made me a classical country jukebox. I cried really hard the first time I drove through the mountains. And I’m really influenced by the folx who continually open up spaces for every identity imaginable. The current political and social climate in the U.S. is a maelstrom to be creating within. I know that my work will expose my belief systems and psychic connections even if I don’t talk about it in this artist statement. Given how the work inherently exposes my own personal politics, I’m not sure the gallery is really on my side. But I’ll tell you this; in my work I transform traumatic or controversial subject matter into imagery that’s more palatable for the community and myself. I question the future of trans rights and reproductive rights, while promoting a space that celebrates representation. My making process is impacted by the existence and denial of the climate crisis, as seen in the Breathing Bag and the Artificial Ventilator. In each piece the forms are altered by visible pressures, mimicking the ability of oppressive systems to eclipse individuality. The tools and uniforms are laid out as a gesture of the nurture that it takes to keep this garden alive in spite of inescapable forces. I think that until we nurture all mothers, the earth will go un-nurtured. I think that it takes a community to know what nurture is. I think that through creating, we are constantly performing with nature even if we’re not using “nature” itself. It all goes back to how the sun is our grandest mother.https://digitalcommons.murraystate.edu/art498/1054/thumbnail.jp

High school students\u27 food choices: A nutrient analysis of students\u27 canteen purchases at four high schools

Links exist between poor eating habits established during childhood and adolescence and the development of dental decay, obesity and anaemia early in life (Ruxton, Kirk, Belton & Holmes, 1993; Douglas, 1999), as well as a number of diseases of affluence, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers later in life (Baranowski et al., 1993; Birch, 1993; National Health and Medical Research Council, 1995; Antine, 1997; Harris et al., 1997; Douglas, 1998; Melnik, Rhoades, Wales, Cowel & Wolfe, 1998; Cholin, 1999; Huon, Wardle & Szabo, 1999). Adolescence has been identified as a unique stage in the life cycle when increased amounts of nutrients are required due to rapid growth. It has been suggested that the food and beverage items consumed by students while at school should contribute approximately one-third of their daily nutrient intake (Perth Dental Hospital and Community Dental Services, 1999). Since the mid-1980\u27s, greater awareness of school-time eating habits has resulted in a number of initiatives aimed at promoting more healthful canteens in Australian schools. In Western Australia, the Western Australian School Canteen Association (W ASCA) assists schools to adopt and maintain healthy canteens. One of WASCA\u27s strategies is the Star Accreditation Program (STARCAP), which awards schools that operate healthy canteens using a star rating system similar to that used in the hospitality and tourism industry. The Starcap program\u27s aim is to increase the availability, promotion and sales of healthier food choices in schools in Western Australia (Western Australian School Canteen Association, 2000, p. 2). The purpose of this study was to compare the nutrient intakes of students\u27 school-time food and beverage consumption of two STARCAP canteens and two REGULAR canteens and the National Health and Medical Research Council\u27s (1991) Recommended Dietary Intakes. Four Perth metropolitan co-educational government high schools were selected to participate in this study; two schools with canteens that were participating in the STARCAP program and two schools with REGULAR canteens. Using a modified version of the 24-hour food recall method, students in two Year 8 classes at each school were asked to recall one day\u27s food and beverage items consumed whilst at school. Analysis of data included evaluating what was offered for sale at each canteen, as well as comparing the proportion of students who consumed the majority of their school-time food intake from the school canteen to those who consumed foods mostly brought from home. The students\u27 mean nutrient intakes of food and beverage items consumed from each canteen were ascertained using a nutrient analysis software package (SERVE), and comparisons were made with the National Health and Medical Council\u27s (1991) Recommended Dietary Intakes

Models of Change: Strategies to Make the Socio-ecological Transformation a Success

    Get PDF
Climate change and many other problems show us more and more clearly that fundamental change is necessary. However, many good ideas get stuck in implementation. Therefore, the question is how we can change more successfully. We take sports courses or go to music lessons to learn, to get better quickly or to avoid hurting ourselves. Professionals in sport, art and other fields also receive intensive coaching from experts. However, when it comes to making successful progress towards sustainability, people often rely on ‘home recipes’. It is time to become more professional in this area as well. To achieve this, it is important to make targeted use of the findings of transformation research and key success factors as well as to develop transformation literacy. In this chapter, the models of change approach is presented, which focuses on central success factors for social change and shows ways to successful change

Developing and Characterizing a Novel TEMPO CNF Hydrogel Adjuvant and Delivery System for Aquatic Vaccines

Aquaculture is a large part of the food production sector which is greatly expanding. One of the largest losses in aquaculture is due to pathogens. Current solutions for protecting farmed finfish from pathogens can be very expensive with variable efficiency. Current disease prevention strategies include vaccination. Types of vaccines include immersion vaccines, feed vaccines, and injectable vaccines. The most popular solution is oil-based injectable vaccines due to its protection. However, the oil-based adjuvant used in most of these formulations causes adverse reactions in the fish including reduced growth. These vaccines require multiple administrations throughout the fish’s lifetime causing unwanted handling stress and additional labor costs. Preliminary trials show that cellulose nanomaterials cause minimal adverse reactions when injected into salmon and does not significantly affect their growth. The goal of this research was to create an adjuvant from cellulose nanomaterials which would increase bacterin efficacy while avoiding harmful side effects. A prolonged release formulation was also desirable, obviating the need for multiple vaccinations. Additionally, hydrogels have been used for a wide variety of applications including drug delivery, making them an attractive aquatic vaccine adjuvant. Cellulose nanomaterials were decided as the polymer to make up the hydrogel matrix due to their biocompatibility, sustainability, high tunability, high abundance, low cost. The development of the hydrogel formulation, modifying the hydrogel for easier delivery into the salmon, measuring the diffusive properties of the hydrogel, and in vivo testing of the hydrogel for analysis of delivery methods and reactions to the formulation are described in this research
