    A Critical Review of "Automatic Patch Generation Learned from Human-Written Patches": Essay on the Problem Statement and the Evaluation of Automatic Software Repair

    At ICSE'2013, there was the first session ever dedicated to automatic program repair. In this session, Kim et al. presented PAR, a novel template-based approach for fixing Java bugs. We strongly disagree with key points of this paper. Our critical review has two goals. First, we aim at explaining why we disagree with Kim and colleagues and why the reasons behind this disagreement are important for research on automatic software repair in general. Second, we aim at contributing to the field with a clarification of the essential ideas behind automatic software repair. In particular we discuss the main evaluation criteria of automatic software repair: understandability, correctness and completeness. We show that depending on how one sets up the repair scenario, the evaluation goals may be contradictory. Eventually, we discuss the nature of fix acceptability and its relation to the notion of software correctness.Comment: ICSE 2014, India (2014

    A Dynamic Bivariate Poisson Model for Analysing and Forecasting Match Results in the English Premier League

    Attack and defense strengths of football teams vary over time due to changes in the teams of players or their managers. We develop a statistical model for the analysis and forecasting of football match results which are assumed to come from a bivariate Poisson distribution with intensity coefficients that change stochastically over time. This development presents a novelty in the statistical time series analysis of match results from football or other team sports. Our treatment is based on state space and importance sampling methods which are computationally efficient. The out-of-sample performance of our methodology is verified in a betting strategy that is applied to the match outcomes from the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons of the English Premier League. We show that our statistical modeling framework can produce a significant positive return over the bookmaker's odds

    Quartz wires versus carbon fibres for improved beam handling capacity of the LEP wire scanners

    After the first investigations performed in 1994, the study of thermal effects on Carbon and Quartz wires has been pursued in 1995. Carbon wires of 8 µm have been studied. Light emission resulting from the two heating mechanisms, electromagnetic fields and collision losses with the beam, were observed. Quartz wires of 10 and 30 µm were investigated and light emission due to the heating by collision with the beam was observed. The heat pattern differs completely from that of Carbon fibres. The Quartz wires withstood at 20 GeV circulating currents of at least 8 mA, the 1995 operational level in LEP. Quantitative evaluations and the influence of various dissipation processes are presented with the aim of evaluating a beam current limit

    A Non-Gaussian Panel Time Series Model for Estimating and Decomposing Default Risk

    We model 1981–2002 annual US default frequencies for a panel of firms in different rating and age classes. The data is decomposed into a systematic and firm-specific risk component, where the systematic component reflects the general economic conditions and default climate. We have to cope with (i) the shared exposure of each age cohort and rating class to the same systematic risk factor; (ii) strongly non-Gaussian features of the individual time series; (iii) possible dynamics of an unobserved common risk factor; (iv) changing default probabilities over the age of the rating, and (v) missing observations. We propose a non-Gaussian multivariate state space model that deals with all of this issues simultaneously. The model is estimated using importance sampling techniques that have been modified in a multivariate setting. This multivariate approach has significant advantages in terms of parameter stability and convergence of the importance sampler

    Conceptual design of an energy efficient transfemoral prosthesis

    In this study, we present the conceptual design of a fully-passive transfemoral prosthesis. The design is inspired by the power flow in human gait in order to have an energy efficient device. The working principle of the conceptual mechanism is based on three storage elements, which are responsible of the energetic coupling between the knee and the ankle joints. Design parameters of the prosthesis have been determined according to the energy absorption intervals of the human gait. Simulation results shows that the power flow of the system is comparable with human data. Finally, an initial prototype is presented as proof of concept

    Preliminary test of a luminescence profile monitor in the CERN SPS

    In order to satisfy the tight emittance requirements of LHC, a non-intercepting beam profile monitor is needed in the SPS to follow the beam emittance evolution during the acceleration cycle from 26 to 450 GeV. Beyond 300 GeV, the synchrotron light monitor can be used. To cover the energy range from injection at 26 GeV to 300 GeV, a monitor based on the luminescence of gas injected in the vacuum chamber has been tested and has given interesting results. This monitor could also be used in LHC, where the same problem arises. Design and results are presented for the SPS monitor
