Monte Carlo studies of supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics with sixteen supercharges at finite temperature
We present the first Monte Carlo results for supersymmetric matrix quantum
mechanics with sixteen supercharges at finite temperature. The recently
proposed non-lattice simulation enables us to include the effects of fermionic
matrices in a transparent and reliable manner. The internal energy nicely
interpolates the weak coupling behavior obtained by the high temperature
expansion, and the strong coupling behavior predicted from the dual black hole
geometry. The Polyakov line takes large values even at low temperature
suggesting the absence of a phase transition in sharp contrast to the bosonic
case. These results provide highly non-trivial evidences for the gauge/gravity

A practical solution to the sign problem in a matrix model for dynamical compactification
The matrix model formulation of superstring theory offers the possibility to
understand the appearance of 4d space-time from 10d as a consequence of
spontaneous breaking of the SO(10) symmetry. Monte Carlo studies of this issue
is technically difficult due to the so-called sign problem. We present a
practical solution to this problem generalizing the factorization method
proposed originally by two of the authors (K.N.A. and J.N.). Explicit Monte
Carlo calculations and large-N extrapolations are performed in a simpler matrix
model with similar properties, and reproduce quantitative results obtained
previously by the Gaussian expansion method. Our results also confirm that the
spontaneous symmetry breaking indeed occurs due to the phase of the fermion
determinant, which vanishes for collapsed configurations. We clarify various
generic features of this approach, which would be useful in applying it to

The Solution Space of the Unitary Matrix Model String Equation and the Sato Grassmannian
The space of all solutions to the string equation of the symmetric unitary
one-matrix model is determined. It is shown that the string equation is
equivalent to simple conditions on points and in the big cell \Gr
of the Sato Grassmannian . This is a consequence of a well-defined
continuum limit in which the string equation has the simple form \lb \cp
,\cq_- \rb =\hbox{\rm 1}, with \cp and \cq_- matrices of
differential operators. These conditions on and yield a simple
system of first order differential equations whose analysis determines the
space of all solutions to the string equation. This geometric formulation leads
directly to the Virasoro constraints \L_n\,(n\geq 0), where \L_n annihilate
the two modified-KdV \t-functions whose product gives the partition function

Abnormal mitochondrial respiration in skeletal muscle in patients with peripheral arterial disease
AbstractObjectiveDiscrete morphologic, enzymatic and functional changes in skeletal muscle mitochondria have been demonstrated in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). We examined mitochondrial respiration in the gastrocnemius muscle of nine patients (10 legs) with advanced PAD and in nine control patients (nine legs) without evidence of PAD.MethodsMitochondrial respiratory rates were determined with a Clark electrode in an oxygraph cell containing saponin-skinned muscle bundles. Muscle samples were obtained from the anteromedial aspect of the gastrocnemius muscle, at a level 10 cm distal to the tibial tuberosity. Mitochondria respiratory rate, calculated as nanoatoms of oxygen consumed per minute per milligram of noncollagen protein, were measured at baseline (V0), after addition of substrates (malate and glutamate; (VSUB), after addition of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) (VADP), and finally, after adenine nucleotide translocase inhibition with atractyloside (VAT). The acceptor control ratio, a sensitive indicator of overall mitochondrial function, was calculated as the ratio of the respiratory rate after the addition of ADP to the respiratory rate after adenine nucleotide translocase inhibition with atractyloside (VADP/ VAT).ResultsRespiratory rate in muscle mitochondria from patients with PAD were not significantly different from control values at baseline (0.31 ± 0.06 vs 0.55 ± 0.12; P = .09), but Vsub was significantly lower in patients with PAD compared with control subjects (0.43 ± 0.07 vs 0.89 ± 0.20; P < .05), as was VADP (0.69 ± 0.13 vs 1.24 ± 0.20; P < .05). Respiratory rates after atractyloside inhibition in patients with PAD were no different from those in control patients (0.47 ± 0.07 vs 0.45 ± P = .08). Compared with control values, mitochondria from patients with PAD had a significantly lower acceptor control ratio (1.41 ± 0.10 vs 2.90 ± 0.20; P < .001).ConclusionMitochondrial respiratory activity is abnormal in lower extremity skeletal muscle in patients with PAD. When considered in concert with the ultrastructural and enzymatic abnormalities previously documented in mitochondria of chronically ischemic muscle, these data support the concept of defective mitochondrial function as a pathophysiologic component of PAD
Postoperative spinal infection mimicking systemic vasculitis with titanium-spinal implants
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Secondary systemic vasculitis after posterior spinal fusion surgery is rare. It is usually related to over-reaction of immune-system, to genetic factors, toxicity, infection or metal allergies.</p> <p>Case Description</p> <p>A 14 year-old girl with a history of extended posterior spinal fusion due to idiopathic scoliosis presented to our department with diffuse erythema and nephritis (macroscopic hemuresis and proteinuria) 5 months post surgery. The surgical trauma had no signs of inflammation or infection. The blood markers ESR and CRP were increased. Skin tests were positive for nickel allergy, which is a content of titanium alloy. The patient received corticosteroids systematically (hydrocortisone 10 mg) for 6 months, leading to total recess of skin and systemic reaction. However, a palpable mass close to the surgical wound raised the suspicion of a late infection. The patient had a second surgery consisting of surgical debridement and one stage revision of posterior spinal instrumentation. Intraoperative cultures were positive to Staphylococcus aureus. Intravenous antibiotics were administered. The patient is now free of symptoms 24 months post revision surgery without any signs of recurrence of either vasculitis or infection.</p> <p>Literature Review</p> <p>Systemic vasculitis after spinal surgery is exceptionally rare. Causative factors are broad and sometimes controversial. In general, it is associated with allergy to metal ions. This is usually addressed with metal on metal total hip bearings. In spinal surgery, titanium implants are considered to be inert and only few reports have presented cases with systemic vasculitides. Therefore, other etiologies of immune over-reaction should always be considered, such as drug toxicity, infection, or genetic predisposition.</p> <p>Purposes and Clinical Relevance</p> <p>Our purpose was to highlight the difficulties during the diagnostic work-up for systemic vasculitis and management in cases of posterior spinal surgery.</p
Alexithymia and its association with burnout, depression and family support among Greek nursing staff
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Few studies have examined the relation between alexithymia (i.e. the inability to recognize and verbalize emotions) and professional burnout. Considering the absence of relevant studies in the Greek scientific literature, the aim of this work was to examine the associations of alexithymia with the three facets of professional burnout, the perception of family support and depression in nursing personnel.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study was performed in one of the largest hospitals in Greece and included 95 nurses. Assessments of alexithymia, burnout, depression and family support were made by means of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory and the Julkunen Family Support Scale, respectively. Student's t-test, Pearson's correlation and stepwise linear regression were used for the evaluation of data.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Alexithymia was correlated positively with depression, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and negatively with sense of family support and personal achievement. Additionally, family support was correlated positively with personal achievement and negatively with depression.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In the scientific literature there is a debate as to whether alexithymia is a stable personality characteristic or if it is dependent on symptoms of mental disorders. We tried to interpret the associations of alexithymia with professional burnout, depressive symptoms and family support. From this study it appears very likely that alexithymia is directly associated with depression and personal achievement, but also indirectly with the sense of family support.</p
