Taxation and Market Power
We analyze the incidence and welfare e¤ects of unit sales taxes in experimental monopoly and Bertrand markets. We nd, in line with economic theory, that rms with no market power are able to shift a high share of a tax burden on to consumers, independent of whether buyers are automated or human players. In monopoly markets, a monopolist bears a large share of the burden of a tax increase. With human buyers, however, this share is smaller than with automated buyers as the presence of human buyers constrains the pricing behavior of a monopolist.tax incidence;monopoly;Bertrand competition;experiment
Immunity of information encoded in decoherence-free subspaces to particle loss
We demonstrate that for an ensemble of qudits, subjected to collective
decoherence in the form of perfectly correlated random SU(d) unitaries, quantum
superpositions stored in the decoherence free subspace are fully immune against
the removal of one particle. This provides a feasible scheme to protect quantum
information encoded in the polarization state of a sequence of photons against
both collective depolarization and one photon loss, and can be demonstrated

Coupled Ito equations of continuous quantum state measurement, and estimation
We discuss a non-linear stochastic master equation that governs the
time-evolution of the estimated quantum state. Its differential evolution
corresponds to the infinitesimal updates that depend on the time-continuous
measurement of the true quantum state. The new stochastic master equation
couples to the two standard stochastic differential equations of
time-continuous quantum measurement. For the first time, we can prove that the
calculated estimate almost always converges to the true state, also at
low-efficiency measurements. We show that our single-state theory can be

Impact of Neutron Decay Experiments on non-Standard Model Physics
This paper gives a brief overview of the present and expected future limits
on physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) from neutron beta decay, which is
described by two parameters only within the SM. Since more than two observables
are accessible, the problem is over-determined. Thus, precise measurements of
correlations in neutron decay can be used to study the SM as well to search for
evidence of possible extensions to it. Of particular interest in this context
are the search for right-handed currents or for scalar and tensor interactions.
Precision measurements of neutron decay observables address important open
questions of particle physics and cosmology, and are generally complementary to
direct searches for new physics beyond the SM in high-energy physics. Free
neutron decay is therefore a very active field, with a number of new

Information gain versus state disturbance for a single qubit
The trade-off between the information gain and the state disturbance is
derived for quantum operations on a single qubit prepared in a uniformly
distributed pure state. The derivation is valid for a class of measures
quantifying the state disturbance and the information gain which satisfy
certain invariance conditions. This class includes in particular the Shannon
entropy versus the operation fidelity. The central role in the derivation is
played by efficient quantum operations, which leave the system in a pure output
state for any measurement outcome. It is pointed out that the optimality of
efficient quantum operations among those inducing a given operator-valued
measure is related to Davies' characterization of convex invariant functions on

Conduction Channels of One-Atom Zinc Contacts
We have determined the transmission coefficients of atomic-sized Zn contacts
using a new type of breakjunction which contains a whisker as a central bridge.
We find that in the last conductance plateau the transport is unexpectedly
dominated by a well-transmitting single conduction channel. We explain the
experimental findings with the help of a tight-binding model which shows that
in an one-atom Zn contact the current proceeds through the 4s and 4p orbitals
