Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Foamy Histiocyte-Like Appearance: A Deceptively Clear Cell Carcinoma Appearing Variant

Get PDF
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) shows many pathological features, and it varies architecturally and cytologically. There have been many reports and discussions of the morphological features of HCC. A 63-year-old man was found to have a solitary tumor in liver segment 7 that was diagnosed as HCC. A partial resection of liver segment 7 was performed. Microscopically, the tumor lesion showed a moderately differentiated HCC. There was also a lesion with foamy histiocyte-like cells corresponding to the white lesion in the face of the cut tumor. Immunohistochemical staining showed that they were negative for CD68, S-100, vimentin, and HMB-45. The cytoplasm itself was negative on periodic acid Schiff (PAS) and Sudan staining. Without immunohistological analysis, it is difficult to distinguish this HCC variant from clear cell carcinoma or metastases of renal cell carcinoma. It is important to recognize this type as a specific cytological variant of HCC that requires confirmation by immunohistochemistry. This report describes the case of a patient with a morphologically distinctive pattern of HCC with prominent cell cytoplasm that had a foamy histiocyte-like appearance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of this HCC variant

Mass spectrometry imaging of the capsaicin localization in the capsicum fruits

We succeeded in performing mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) of the localization of capsaicin in cross-sections of the capsicum fruits at a resolution of 250 µm using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. Post source decay of protonated capsaicin ion revealed structural information of the corresponding acid amide of vanillylamide and C9 chain fatty acid. MALDI-TOF-MSI confirmed that localization of capsaicin in the placenta is higher than that in the pericarp. In addition, it revealed no localization of capsaicin in seed and the higher localization of capsaicin at placenta surface compared with that in the internal region. A quantitative difference was detected between localizations of capsaicin at placenta, pericarp and seed in the capsicum fruits. This imaging approach is a promising technique for rapid quality evaluation general food as well as health food and identification of medicinal capsaicin in plant tissues

Here we present a summary of joint discussions on the results of three mountain experiments with large-scale emulsion chambers, at Pamir, Mt. Fuji and Chacaltaya. Observations cover gamma quanta, hadrons and their clusters (called "families"). The following topics are covered, concerning the characteristics of nuclear interactions the energy region 1014-1016 eV: (i) rapid dissipation seen in atmospheric diffusion of high-energy cosmic-rays; (ii) multiplicity and Pt increase in produced pi-mesons in the fragmentation region; (iii) existence of large-Pt jets, (iv) extremely hadron-rich family of the Centauro type; (v) exotic phenomena in the extremely high energy region beyond 1016 eV. © 1981.1911125(1977) Acta Univ. A case of large protruding cystitis glandularis is reported. A 36-year-old man was admitted to our hospital due to acute cholecystitis, and large protruding masses were incidentally found in the urinary bladder by abdominal ultrasonography. The histological study revealed that they consisted of a large number of Brunn's nests with or without cysts which were often accompanied with columnar epithelial metaplasia, and of glandular structures closely resembling the colonic crypts. The mucin-histochemical study demonstrated glandular lesions in the bladder secreted colonic type mucin, and endocrine cells positive with Grimelius' staining. A review of literature disclosed 19 clinical cases of cystitis glandularis, since 1970, in Japan, but such a large protruding lesion as this case is rare. We first performed detailed histological and mucin-histochemical studies for this clinical case

Drug Evolution Concept in Drug Design: 1. Hybridization Method†

No full text
A novel concept, “drug evolution”, is proposed to develop chemical libraries that have a high probability of finding drugs or drug candidates. It converts biological evolution into chemical evolution. In this paper, we present “hybridization” drug evolution, which is the equivalent of sexual recombination of parental genomes in biological evolution. The hybridization essentially shuffles the building blocks of the parent drugs and ought to drug(s); no drug evolution can otherwise occur. We hybridized two drugs, benzocaine and metoclopramide and generated 16 molecules that include the parent drugs, four known drugs, and two molecules whose therapeutic activities are reported. The unusually high number of drugs and drug candidates in the library encourages high expectations of finding new drug(s) or drug candidate(s) within the remaining eight compounds. Interestingly, the therapeutic applications of the eight drugs or drug candidates in the library are fairly diverse as 38 therapeutic applications and 25 molecular targets are counted. Therefore, the library fits as a general chemical library for unspecified therapeutic activities. The hybridization of other two drugs, aspirin and cresotamide, is also described to demonstrate the generality of the method.NRC publication: Ye
