Growth of Large Domain Epitaxial Graphene on the C-Face of SiC
Growth of epitaxial graphene on the C-face of SiC has been investigated.
Using a confinement controlled sublimation (CCS) method, we have achieved well
controlled growth and been able to observe propagation of uniform monolayer
graphene. Surface patterns uncover two important aspects of the growth, i.e.
carbon diffusion and stoichiometric requirement. Moreover, a new "stepdown"
growth mode has been discovered. Via this mode, monolayer graphene domains can
have an area of hundreds of square micrometers, while, most importantly, step
bunching is avoided and the initial uniformly stepped SiC surface is preserved.
The stepdown growth provides a possible route towards uniform epitaxial
graphene in wafer size without compromising the initial flat surface morphology
of SiC.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figure
Čerenkov third-harmonic generation in χ⁽²⁾ nonlinear photonic crystal
We report on the observation of Čerenkov emission of a third-harmonic frequency in a two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal, where the second-order nonlinearity χ⁽²⁾ is spatially modulated by the reversal of ferroelectric domains. We analyze both spatial and polarization properties of the emitted radiation and find the results in agreement with our theoretical predictions. The authors acknowledge the financial supports from

Effect of He Plasma Jet Versus Surface Plasma on the Metabolites of Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells
Cold atmospheric plasma, including plasma jet and surface plasma, can promote the apoptosis of cancer cells without causing significant damage to surrounding normal cells, which was hopeful to be applied to the clinical cancer therapy. However, experimental plasma devices used directly to clinical experiments has challenges in technology and methods, especially the difference in killing tumor cells efficiency of these two common plasma sources. Therefore, it is great necessity to explore the differences in treating tumors between different plasma sources. This paper achieved good killing efficiency by using two kinds of cold atmospheric plasma generating devices, namely plasma jet and surface plasma treatment along acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The results showed that the He plasma jet kills leukemia cells more efficiently than surface plasma with the same voltage and frequency and the same time. By GC-TOFMS and metabolomics analysis, this paper compared the differential metabolites of leukemia cells treated by two plasma devices and the key metabolic pathways closely related to differential metabolites. Simultaneously, we found alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism was most correlated with a key differential metabolite, glutamine. It was found that the glutaminase activity of He plasma jet group was lower than that of surface plasma group, which might be a reason for He plasma jet group to kill tumor cells better. It was also worth noting that relative quantity of glucose metabolites of plasma jet treatment group was lower than that of surface plasma treatment group. This study provides the basis for clinical trials for future
Comparison Between the Water Activation Effects by Pulsed and Sinusoidal Helium Plasma Jets
Comparisons between pulsed and sinusoidal plasma jets have been extensively reported for the discharge characteristics and gaseous reactive species, but rarely for the aqueous reactive species in water solutions treated by the two types of plasma jets. This motivates us to compare the concentrations of aqueous reactive species induced by a pulsed and a sinusoidal plasma jet, since it is widely reported that these aqueous reactive species play a crucial role in various plasma biomedical applications. Experimental results show that the aqueous H2O2, OH/O2−, and O2−/ONOO− induced by the pulsed plasma jet have higher concentrations, and the proportional difference increases with the discharge power. However, the emission intensities of OH(A) and O(3p5P) are higher for the sinusoidal plasma jet, which may be attributed to its higher gas temperature since more water vapor could participate in the plasma. In addition, the efficiency of bacterial inactivation induced by the pulsed plasma jet is higher than that for the sinusoidal plasma jet, in accordance with the concentration relation of aqueous reactive species for the two types of plasma jets. The Mechanism of Plasma Plume Termination for Pulse Excited Plasmas in a Quartz Tube
Although the formation and propagation of plasma plume for atmospheric pressure plasmas have been intensively studied, how does the plasma plume terminate is still little known. In this letter, helium plasma plumes are generated in a long quartz tube by pulsed voltages and a constant gas flow. The voltages have a variable pulse width (PW) from 0.5 μs to 200 μs. It is found that the plasma plume terminates right after the falling edge of each voltage pulse when PW \u3c 20 μs, whereas it terminates before the falling edge. When PW is larger than 30 μs, the duration of plasma plume starts to decrease, and the termination is found to occur at the current zero moment of the discharge current through the high-voltage electrode, which is much different from that through the ground electrode. This indicates that part of the discharge current is shunted by the plasma plume to its downstream gas region. An equivalent circuit model is developed, from which the surface charge deposited on the quartz tube is found crucial for accelerating the termination of a plasma plume when PW \u3e 30 μs
Production and Correlation of Reactive Oxygen and Nitrogen Species in Gas- and Liquid-Phase Generated by Helium Plasma Jets Under Different Pulse Widths
In this paper, we present the effects of the pulse width (PW) on the plasma jet\u27s discharge characteristics, particularly focusing on the production and correlation of the reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) in gas- and liquid-phase. It is found that the length of plasma jet plume first increases before the PW of 10 μs, then gradually decreases and finally almost remains unchanged beyond 150 μs. The plasma bullet disappears after the falling edge of the voltage pulse at low PW, while it terminates far ahead of the falling edge of voltage pulse at high PW. This is mainly attributed to accumulation of space charges that lead to weakening of the reduced electric field with an increase of PW from low to high. More important, it is found that the excited reactive species, the positive and negative ions from plasma jet, and the concentrations of NO2– and NO3– in deionized water exposed to plasma jet so display the first increasing and then decreasing change trend with increase of PW, while the concentration of H2O2 in water almost displays the linearly increasing trend. This mainly results from the formation of the H3O+ and HO2–, as well as their ion water clusters that can produce more OH radicals to be converted into H2O2, while the NO2– and NO3– in gas phase can transport into water and exist most stably in water. The water cluster formation at gas-liquid interface is an important key process that can affect the chemical nature and dose of aqueous RONS in water; this is beneficial for understanding how the RONS are formed in liquid-phase. The role of ferroelectric domain structure in second harmonic generation in random quadratic media
We study theoretically and numerically the second harmonic
generation in a nonlinear crystal with random distribution of ferroelectric
domains. We show that the specific features of disordered domain structure
greatly affect the emission pattern of the generated harmonics. This
phenomena can be used to characterize the degree of disorder in nonlinear
photonic structures
Exploring the supersymmetric U(1) U(1) model with dark matter, muon and mass limits
We study the low scale predictions of supersymmetric standard model extended
by symmetry, obtained from breaking via a
left-right supersymmetric model, imposing universal boundary conditions. Two
singlet Higgs fields are responsible for the radiative symmetry breaking, and a singlet fermion is introduced to
generate neutrino masses through inverse seesaw mechanism. The lightest
neutralino or sneutrino emerge as dark matter candidates, with different low
scale implications. We find that the composition of the neutralino LSP changes
considerably depending on the neutralino LSP mass, from roughly half
bino, half MSSM bino, to singlet higgsino, or completely dominated by MSSM
higgsino. The sneutrino LSP is statistically much less likely, and when it
occurs it is a 50-50 mixture of right-handed sneutrino and the scalar . Most of the solutions consistent with the relic density constraint survive
the XENON 1T exclusion curve for both LSP cases. We compare the two scenarios
and investigate parameter space points and find consistency with the muon
anomalous magnetic moment only at the edge of deviation from the
measured value. However, we find that the sneutrino LSP solutions could be
ruled out completely by strict reinforcement of the recent mass
bounds. We finally discuss collider prospects for testing the model
NO2- and NO3- Enhance Cold Atmospheric Plasma Induced Cancer Cell Death by Generation of ONOO-
Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a rapidly developed technology that has been widely applied in biomedicine especially in cancer treatment. Due to the generation of various active species in plasma, CAP could induce various tumor cells death and showed a promising potential in cancer therapy. To enhance the biological effects of gas plasma, changing the discharging parameters is the most commonly used method, yet increasing discharging power will lead to a higher possibility of simultaneously damage surrounding tissues. In this study, by adding nontoxic concentration of additional nitrite and nitrate in the medium, we found that anti-tumor effect of CAP treatment was enhanced in the same discharging parameters. By microplate reader and cell flow cytometer we measured several extracellular and intracellular RONS and found that ONOO- was mostly correlated with the enhanced cancer cell killing effect. We proposed that more nitrogen supplies such as nitrite and nitrate could increase the production of RNS especially ONOO- and resulted in a better killing effect to cancer cells. Our results provided a new strategy to enhance the antitumor effect by plasma jet treatment without changing the discharging parameters. © 2018 Author(s)
