Energetics and dynamics of H adsorbed in a nanoporous material at low temperature
Molecular hydrogen adsorption in a nanoporous metal organic framework
structure (MOF-74) was studied via van der Waals density-functional
calculations. The primary and secondary binding sites for H were confirmed.
The low-lying rotational and translational energy levels were calculated, based
on the orientation and position dependent potential energy surface at the two
binding sites. A consistent picture is obtained between the calculated
rotational-translational transitions for different H loadings and those
measured by inelastic neutron scattering exciting the singlet to triplet (para
to ortho) transition in H. The H binding energy after zero point energy
correction due to the rotational and translational motions is predicted to be
100 meV in good agreement with the experimental value of 90 meV.Comment: 5 pagers, 4 figures. added reference
Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the merging cluster of galaxies PLCK G036.7+14.9
We present Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of PLCK G036.7+14.9 from the
Chandra-Planck Legacy Program. The high resolution X-ray observations reveal
two close subclusters, G036N and G036S, which were not resolved by previous
ROSAT, optical, or recent Planck observations. We perform detailed imaging and
spectral analyses and use a simplified model to study the kinematics of this
system. The basic picture is that PLCK G036.7+14.9 is undergoing a major merger
(mass ratio close to unity) between the two massive subclusters, with the
merger largely along the line-of-sight and probably at an early stage. G036N
hosts a small, moderate cool-core, while G036S has at most a very weak
cool-core in the central 40 kpc region. The difference in core cooling times is
unlikely to be caused by the ongoing merger disrupting a pre-existing cool-core
in G036S. G036N also hosts an unresolved radio source in the center, which may
be heating the gas if the radio source is extended. The Planck derived mass is
higher than the X-ray measured mass of either subcluster, but is lower than the
X-ray measured mass of the whole cluster, due to the fact that Planck does not
resolve PLCK G036.7+14.9 into subclusters and interprets it as a single
cluster. This mass discrepancy could induce significant bias to the mass
function if such previously unresolved systems are common in the Planck cluster
sample. High resolution X-ray observations are necessary to identify the
fraction of such systems and correct such a bias for the purpose of precision
cosmological studies.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures (low resolution) with additional 12 figures in

Rapid haplotype inference for nuclear families
Hapi is a new dynamic programming algorithm that ignores uninformative states and state transitions in order to efficiently compute minimum-recombinant and maximum likelihood haplotypes. When applied to a dataset containing 103 families, Hapi performs 3.8 and 320 times faster than state-of-the-art algorithms. Because Hapi infers both minimum-recombinant and maximum likelihood haplotypes and applies to related individuals, the haplotypes it infers are highly accurate over extended genomic distances.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (NIH grant 5-T90-DK070069)National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (Grant 5-P01-NS055923)National Science Foundation (U.S.) (Graduate Research Fellowship

Racial Difference in Human Platelet PAR4 Reactivity Reflects Expression of PCTP and miR-376c
Racial differences in the pathophysiology of atherothrombosis are poorly understood. We explored the function and transcriptome of platelets in healthy black (n = 70) and white (n = 84) subjects. PAR4 thrombin receptor induced platelet aggregation and calcium mobilization were significantly greater in black subjects. Numerous differentially expressed (DE) RNAs were associated with both race and PAR4 reactivity, including phosphatidylcholine transfer protein (PCTP), and platelets from blacks expressed higher levels of PC-TP protein. PC-TP inhibition or depletion blocked activation of platelets or megakaryocytic cell lines through PAR4 but not PAR1. MiR-376c levels were DE by race and PAR4 reactivity, and were inversely correlated with PCTP mRNA levels, PC-TP protein levels and PAR4 reactivity. MiR-376c regulated expression of PC-TP in human megakaryocytes. A disproportionately high number of miRNAs DE by race and PAR4 reactivity, including miR-376c, are encoded in the DLK1-DIO3 locus, and were lower in platelets from blacks. These results support PC-TP as a regulator of the racial difference in PAR4-mediated platelet activation, indicate a genomic contribution to platelet function that differs by race, and emphasize a need to consider race effects when developing anti-thrombotic drugs
Shower development of particles with momenta from 15 GeV to 150 GeV in the CALICE scintillator-tungsten hadronic calorimeter
We present a study of showers initiated by electrons, pions, kaons, and
protons with momenta from 15 GeV to 150 GeV in the highly granular CALICE
scintillator-tungsten analogue hadronic calorimeter. The data were recorded at
the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron in 2011. The analysis includes measurements
of the calorimeter response to each particle type as well as measurements of
the energy resolution and studies of the longitudinal and radial shower
development for selected particles. The results are compared to Geant4
simulations (version 9.6.p02). In the study of the energy resolution we include
previously published data with beam momenta from 1 GeV to 10 GeV recorded at
the CERN Proton Synchrotron in 2010.Comment: 35 pages, 21 figures, 8 table
Pion and proton showers in the CALICE scintillator-steel analogue hadron calorimeter
Showers produced by positive hadrons in the highly granular CALICE
scintillator-steel analogue hadron calorimeter were studied. The experimental
data were collected at CERN and FNAL for single particles with initial momenta
from 10 to 80 GeV/c. The calorimeter response and resolution and spatial
characteristics of shower development for proton- and pion-induced showers for
test beam data and simulations using Geant4 version 9.6 are compared.Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures, JINST style, changes in the author list, typos

Selection at a single locus leads to widespread expansion of toxoplasma gondii lineages that are virulent in mice
The determinants of virulence are rarely defined for eukaryotic parasites such as T. gondii, a widespread parasite of mammals that also infects humans, sometimes with serious consequences. Recent laboratory studies have established that variation in a single secreted protein, a serine/threonine kinase known as ROPO18, controls whether or not mice survive infection. Here, we establish the extent and nature of variation in ROP18among a collection of parasite strains from geographically diverse regions. Compared to other genes, ROP18 showed extremely high levels of diversification and changes in expression level, which correlated with severity of infection in mice. Comparison with an out-group demonstrated that changes in the upstream region that regulates expression of ROP18 led to an historical increase in the expression and exposed the protein to diversifying selective pressure. Surprisingly, only three atypically distinct protein variants exist despite marked genetic divergence elsewhere in the genome. These three forms of ROP18 are likely adaptations for different niches in nature, and they confer markedly different virulence to mice. The widespread distribution of a single mouse-virulent allele among geographically and genetically disparate parasites may have consequences for transmission and disease in other hosts, including humans
Performance of the first prototype of the CALICE scintillator strip electromagnetic calorimeter
A first prototype of a scintillator strip-based electromagnetic calorimeter
was built, consisting of 26 layers of tungsten absorber plates interleaved with
planes of 45x10x3 mm3 plastic scintillator strips. Data were collected using a
positron test beam at DESY with momenta between 1 and 6 GeV/c. The prototype's
performance is presented in terms of the linearity and resolution of the energy
measurement. These results represent an important milestone in the development
of highly granular calorimeters using scintillator strip technology. This
technology is being developed for a future linear collider experiment, aiming
at the precise measurement of jet energies using particle flow techniques
