Assimilation of Perimeter Data and Coupling with Fuel Moisture in a Wildland Fire - Atmosphere DDDAS

We present a methodology to change the state of the Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with the fire spread code SFIRE, based on Rothermel's formula and the level set method, and with a fuel moisture model. The fire perimeter in the model changes in response to data while the model is running. However, the atmosphere state takes time to develop in response to the forcing by the heat flux from the fire. Therefore, an artificial fire history is created from an earlier fire perimeter to the new perimeter, and replayed with the proper heat fluxes to allow the atmosphere state to adjust. The method is an extension of an earlier method to start the coupled fire model from a developed fire perimeter rather than an ignition point. The level set method is also used to identify parameters of the simulation, such as the spread rate and the fuel moisture. The coupled model is available from openwfm.org, and it extends the WRF-Fire code in WRF release.Comment: ICCS 2012, 10 pages; corrected some DOI typesetting in the reference

Sensing of Intelligent Robots Based on Applications of Tactile Slip Displacement Sensors

    No full text
This paper discusses the design of modern tactile and slip displacement sensors for information-control systems of intelligent and adaptive robots. It provides information on three approaches for using slip displacement signals (for correction of claiming force, for identification of manipulated object mass and for correction of robot control algorithm). The study presents the analysis of different methods for slip displacement signals detection, as well as new sensors schemes, mathematical models and correction methods. Special attention is paid to investigations of sensors developed by authors with the capacity, magnetic sensitive elements and with automatic adjustment of clamping force. The proposed structure of multi-functional computerized information-control system for intelligent robot is presented

Development of the Combined Method for Evaluating and Controlling the Reliability Indicator «Probability of Failure-free Switching» of A Radio Technical Complex

The operation of a radio-technical complex based on a technical condition is represented by cycles. Each cycle implies control over a limiting state in order to make timely and informed decisions on managing the operation of a radio-technical complex. That should resolve the task of assessing and monitoring the indicators of fault-free operation with the required accuracy and reliability based on operational observations and, if necessary, special tests that could minimize the cost of special tests. Given the introduction for a radio-technical complex of the repeated application of a new indicator of fault-free operation «the probability of trouble-free switching», a combined method of its evaluation and control has been developed. This method is a set of known and developed criteria, models, methods, and schemes that determines the sequence of their application for joint evaluation and control of this indicator. The criteria for verifying the uniformity of data on the operational observations and special tests for the fault-free operation of a radio-technical complex have been defined, as well as the corresponding models for assessing the one-sided lower confidence boundaries of the indicator under consideration, and the methods to control it. The devised method makes it possible to derive estimates of the probability of trouble-free switching, as well as the magnitudes of the observed risks of decisions being made with acceptable accuracy and reliability. The results of modeling the devised combined method helped obtain the accuracy and reliability of its estimates and the observed risks of controls carried out. Recommendations have been compiled for applying the method to address the challenges of joint assessment and control of the probability of trouble-free switching of the considered complexe
