    Comparison of the dental education systems in Korea and Japan

    In recent years, international relationships in dentistry have grown stronger through journals, books, academies, seminars, researcher exchanges and so forth. Korea and Japan are neighbours in East Asia. However, no comparison of the dental education systems of the two countries has been published. Therefore, the authors have provided the present comparison to promote mutual understanding and to familiarise dentists around the world with dental education in these two countries.     The Effect Of Education On Oral Health Students’ Attitudes In Australia And New Zealand

    Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the oral health attitudes and behavior of students in the oral health curriculum in Australia and New Zealand. Materials and Methods: The Hiroshima University ‑ Dental Behavioral Inventory was administered to students in the first (year 1) and final years (year 3) of the oral health curriculum at Charles Sturt University in Australia and the University of Otago in New Zealand. A total of fifty‑two year 1 students and forty‑five year 3 students completed English version of the questionnaire in 2013. The responses were statistically analyzed by Fisher’s exact tests and exact logistic regression models. Results: The responses of students in years 1 and 3 differed significantly for “I worry about the color of my teeth” at Charles Sturt University and at the University Otago, for “I think my teeth are getting worse despite my daily brushing,” “I put off going to the dentist until I have a toothache,” and “I don’t feel I’ve brushed well unless I brush with strong strokes.” The estimated odds ratios from the exact logistic regression models showed that year 1 students were more likely to agree with above‑mentioned four questions. Conclusions: Oral Health students who had been educated in a 3‑year oral health curriculum in Australia and New Zealand had more positive attitudes and behaviors related oral health than did students at the beginning of their curriculum

    Cross-cultural differences of self-reported oral health behaviour in Japanese and Finnish dental students

    Objective: To determine whether any differences existed in dental health behaviour between Japanese and Finnish dental students. Setting: Hiroshima University School of Dentistry and the University of Helsinki. Design: Comparison of cross-cultural differences of self-reported oral health behaviour. Subjects: Dental students, 337 in Japan and 113 in Finland. Method: Subjects were surveyed using the Japanese and Finnish versions of a 20-item questionnaire entitled Hiroshima University-Dental Behavioural Inventory (HU-DBI). Results: Only 2 per cent of Finnish students reported that they put off going to the dentist until they had toothache, compared to 56 per cent of Japanese students. Similarly, significantly more Japanese students thought that their teeth were getting worse despite their daily brushing, compared to their Finnish peers. The mean HU-DBI score of Year 1 Finnish students was higher than that of their Japanese peers, which suggested a higher level of dental health awareness in Finnish students upon entry into dental school. The mean scores of the Japanese students were lower than those of their Finnish peers until Year 3. The mean scores of Year 5 and Year 6 Japanese students were higher than that of Year 1 students, indicating raised self-care levels influenced by the course in preventive dentistry. The gender difference of the HU-DBI score was not a major feature in either country. Conclusions: Self-reported oral health behaviours seemed to be very different between the two countries, which reflected different culture and/or health education systems of the students

    Comparison of United States and Korean dental hygiene students using the Hiroshima University-Dental Behavioural Inventory (HU-DBI)

    Objective: To compare cross-national differences of dental health behaviour among dental hygiene students. Design: Cross-cultural differences. Setting: United States (USA) and Korea. Subjects and methods: One hundred and twenty-six dental hygiene students in USA and 246 in Korea were surveyed using the Hiroshima University-Dental Behavioural Inventory (HU-DBI) (in English and Korean versions respectively). Results: There were considerable differences in oral health behaviour between USA and Korean dental hygiene students. Of great significance were findings that while only a small proportion of the USA students (1%) reported gum bleeding when they brushed their teeth, 37% of the Korean students did so (P<0.001). Furthermore, only 19% of the Korean students had been told by their dentist that they were performing a high level of plaque control, contrasted with 76% of the USA students. Logistic regression model showed that it was possible to distinguish USA students from Korean peers with a probability of more than 90% by using the HU-DBI. Conclusions: There were considerable differences in dental health attitudes/behaviour among dental hygiene students in the two countries. The variation in the favourable attitudes/behaviour toward oral health appeared to reflect the students' clinical training experience in Korea

    A cross-cultural comparison of dental health attitudes and behaviour among freshman dental students in Japan, Hong Kong and West China

    Objective: To clarify the differences in dental health attitudes/behaviour among freshman dental students. Design: Cross-cultural differences. Setting: Japan, Hong Kong and West China. Participants and methods: The original version of the Hiroshima University-Dental Behavioural Inventory (HU-DBI) was written in Japanese. After testing the validity of both English and Chinese versions, the original version of the HU-DBI was administered to 58 freshman Japanese dental students, the English version to 43 Hong Kong Chinese peers and the Chinese version to 39 West Chinese peers. Results: Significant cultural differences were found for 16 items out of 20. The most striking result was that the Japanese students were more likely to have used a dye to see how clean their teeth were, compared to their Chinese peers (P<0.001). The Chinese students were less likely to have a belief that they could clean their teeth well without using toothpaste (P<0.001), whereas higher percentages of the Chinese students worried about having bad breath (P<0.001). A higher percentage of the Hong Kong students reported that they regularly checked their teeth in a mirror than did their West Chinese or Japanese peers (P<0.05). Conclusions: There were considerable differences in dental health attitudes/ behaviour among freshman dental students in the three cultural groups

    Successful Non-Surgical Root Canal Treatment on Auto- Transplanted Maxillary Premolar with Apical Periodontitis

    Auto-transplantation is a procedure that replaces traumatized or congenitally missing teeth. While most auto-transplanted teeth are successfully integrated into recipient sites, the donor tooth may develop apical periodontitis, causing early failure. In the present case report, the periodontic resident performed the procedure on a 15-year-old male by selecting donor teeth #4 and #13 and transplanting them at recipient sites #29 and #20, respectively. After 6 weeks, the patient was referred to the endodontic resident for evaluation of tooth #20 due to symptom development. While one auto-transplanted tooth (donor tooth #4, recipient site #29) was successfully integrated, the other (donor tooth #13, recipient site #20) was unsuccessful: the patient was diagnosed with pulp necrosis and a chronic apical abscess. Because of the patient’s age, collaboration among periodontic, endodontic, and orthodontic residents/specialists informed the clinical decision to pursue non-surgical root canal treatment (NSRCT) rather than extraction. The canal was cleaned and shaped to a size #80 using copious irrigation of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), followed by 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) via the EndoVac Negative Pressure Irrigation system. The tooth was dried with paper points, and then calcium hydroxide was mixed with 2.5% NaOCl and placed with an amalgam carrier 2mm from the radiographic apex. The tooth was next temporized with Teflon tape and Fuji TRIAGE. Four weeks later, after confirming the patient was asymptomatic and tooth mobility had decreased, the canal was obturated using EndoSequence Bioceramic Root Repair Material Fast Set Putty in 2mm incremental layers to achieve a threedimensional fill and create an apical plug to prevent gutta-percha extrusion, then backfilled in incremental layers of guttapercha to the cementoenamel junction (CEJ). At the 8-month follow-up, the patient was asymptomatic, and the periodontal ligament (PDL) had no signs of periapical pathology.     Effect of dental education on peruvian dental students' oral health-related attitudes and behavior

    This study evaluated the effect of dental education on oral health-related attitudes and behavior of students in a five-year dental program in Peru. A survey using the Hiroshima University-Dental Behavioral Inventory (HU-DBI), which consists of twenty dichotomous responses (agree-disagree) regarding oral health behavior and attitudes, was completed by Year 1 and Year 5 dental students at the Universidad Inca Garcilaso de la Vega in Lima, Peru. A total of 153 Year 1 students and 120 Year 5 students responded to the Spanish version of the HU-DBI questionnaire. The data were analyzed using chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses. Compared to the Year 1 students, the Year 5 dental students were more likely to agree with questions such as "I think I can clean my teeth well without using toothpaste" (OR=0.24, 95% CI: 0.10-0.58); "I have used a dye to see how clean my teeth are" (OR=0.19, 95% CI: 0.10-0.36); and "I have had my dentist tell me that I brush very well" (OR=0.34, 95% CI: 0.17-0.69). Overall, the data showed that the curriculum in this dental school in Peru resulted in more positive oral health-related attitudes and behavior among Year 5 dental students compared to those of Year 1 dental students

    Increased insolation threshold for runaway greenhouse processes on Earth like planets

    Because the solar luminosity increases over geological timescales, Earth climate is expected to warm, increasing water evaporation which, in turn, enhances the atmospheric greenhouse effect. Above a certain critical insolation, this destabilizing greenhouse feedback can "runaway" until all the oceans are evaporated. Through increases in stratospheric humidity, warming may also cause oceans to escape to space before the runaway greenhouse occurs. The critical insolation thresholds for these processes, however, remain uncertain because they have so far been evaluated with unidimensional models that cannot account for the dynamical and cloud feedback effects that are key stabilizing features of Earth's climate. Here we use a 3D global climate model to show that the threshold for the runaway greenhouse is about 375 W/m2^2, significantly higher than previously thought. Our model is specifically developed to quantify the climate response of Earth-like planets to increased insolation in hot and extremely moist atmospheres. In contrast with previous studies, we find that clouds have a destabilizing feedback on the long term warming. However, subsident, unsaturated regions created by the Hadley circulation have a stabilizing effect that is strong enough to defer the runaway greenhouse limit to higher insolation than inferred from 1D models. Furthermore, because of wavelength-dependent radiative effects, the stratosphere remains cold and dry enough to hamper atmospheric water escape, even at large fluxes.
