From the mid-nineteenth century, Asia, including China and Japan, has been involved in the trend of modernization that was triggered by the activities of European and American powers in this area. In a time of drastic changes, Shibusawa Eiichi (1840-1931) assumed several roles successively: he served as retainer during the bakumatsu period, as official in the Meiji government, and afterwards as businessman, philanthropist, and non-official diplomat. During his service in the Meiji government from 1869 to 1873 and as an entrepreneur from 1873 to 1909, Shibusawa played a key role in devising economic and diplomatic policies for the Meiji government. He is even considered a major designer of modem Japanese economic systems and society. This paper examines Shibusawa Eiichi\u27s view of Japan\u27s foreign affairs and focuses on the way he influenced the Meiji government

Various aspects of the methods of physical and physicochemical modification of components of filled thermo-plastic composite materials are analyzed, aimed at improving the surface properties of the fillers and the technological properties of the polymer matrix during their interaction. It is noted that the improvement of the interfacial interaction of the components of polymer reactoplastic composites, including adhesive strength, is a key factor for improving the reliability of the cured filled composite. As a promising area of research, a modification of the surface of the reinforcing fibrous filler and the technological characteristics of the liquid polymer binder, aimed at increasing their contact properties in the composite was chosen. The effectiveness of the physical method of modifying the components of composites in the form of low-frequency ultrasonic processing is described. The peculiarities of cluster formation and physicochemical modification of epoxy polymers filled with dispersed fillers are analyzed. Attention is focused on the effectiveness of ultrasonic processing in cavitation mode for deagglomeration and uniform distribution of nanoparticles in a liquid medium during the creation of nanocomposites. Experimentally confirmed the improvement of the technological properties of liquid epoxy polymers, modified by ultrasound, used for the impregnation of oriented fibrous fillers, as well as the improvement of the physicomechanical properties of the sonicated epoxy matrices

Antimicrobial peptide protegrin-3 adopt an antiparallel dimer in the presence of DPC micelles: A high-resolution NMR study

© 2015 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht. A tendency to dimerize in the presence of lipids was found for the protegrin. The dimer formation by the protegrin-1 (PG-1) is the first step for further oligomeric membrane pore formation. Generally there are two distinct model of PG-1 dimerization in either a parallel or antiparallel β-sheet. But despite the wealth of data available today, protegrin dimer structure and pore formation is still not completely understood. In order to investigate a more detailed dimerization process of PG-1 and if it will be the same for another type of protegrins, in this work we used a high-resolution NMR spectroscopy for structure determination of protegrin-3 (RGGGL-CYCRR-RFCVC-VGR) in the presence of perdeuterated DPC micelles and demonstrate that PG-3 forms an antiparallel NCCN dimer with a possible association of these dimers. This structural study complements previously published solution, solid state and computational studies of PG-1 in various environments and validate the potential of mean force simulations of PG-1 dimers and association of dimers to form octameric or decameric β-barrels

Child’s heart development and contractility from prenatal to postnatal period

    Get PDF
This literature review analyzes current data on the main stages of child’s heart contractility development from prenatal to postnatal period. The presented information will expand the conventional ideas on the age-related cardiovascular physiology in children, supplementing with relevant knowledge about the patterns of left ventricular mechanics, and the mechanisms affecting child’s heart morphology. In addition, we consider the evolutionary feasibility of the simultaneous existence of various left ventricular mechanics models, which ensure the effective cardiac function in the postnatal period. This is very important for the work of neonatologists, pediatricians, pediatric cardiologists and therapists

Oligomerization of the antimicrobial peptide Protegrin-5 in a membrane-mimicking environment. Structural studies by high-resolution NMR spectroscopy

© 2016 European Biophysical Societies' AssociationProtegrin pore formation is believed to occur in a stepwise fashion that begins with a nonspecific peptide interaction with the negatively charged bacterial cell walls via hydrophobic and positively charged amphipathic surfaces. There are five known nature protegrins (PG1-PG5), and early studies of PG-1 (PDB ID:1PG1) shown that it could form antiparallel dimer in membrane mimicking environment which could be a first step for further oligomeric membrane pore formation. Later, we solved PG-2 (PDB ID:2MUH) and PG-3 (PDB ID:2MZ6) structures in the same environment and for PG-3 observed a strong dαα NOE effects between residues R18 and F12, V14, and V16. These “inconsistent” with monomer structure NOEs appears due to formation of an additional antiparallel β-sheet between two monomers. It was also suggested that there is a possible association of protegrins dimers to form octameric or decameric β-barrels in an oligomer state. In order to investigate a more detailed oligomerization process of protegrins, in the present article we report the monomer (PDB ID: 2NC7) and octamer pore structures of the protegrin-5 (PG-5) in the presence of DPC micelles studied by solution NMR spectroscopy. In contrast to PG-1, PG-2, and PG-3 studies, for PG-5 we observed not only dimer NOEs but also several additional NOEs between side chains, which allows us to calculate an octamer pore structure of PG-5 that was in good agreement with previous AFM and PMF data

Analysis of cytokine profile markers in conjunction with the clinical manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can provide valuable information about the pathogenetic manifestations of the disease, and therefore, in the future, determine drugs that affect the cytokine storm and have an anti-inflammatory effect.Aim. To identify correlations between the parameters of the developed cytokine profile and the clinical course in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 of different severity.Material and methods. The study included 70 hospitalized patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19, with a mean age of 58 [50;69] years, including 40 men (57%) and 30 women (43%). The average lung involvement according to computed tomography (CT) at admission was CT-2 [1;3]. Peripheral venous blood was taken at admission, which averaged 7 [6; 8] days from the symptom onset. Standard biochemical parameters were studied, as well as 47 cytokines and chemokines using the Multiplex system (Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany).Results. Correlations was found between the lung involvement degree and the level of IL-8 (r=0,31, p<0,05), IL-15 (r=0,35, p<0,05), IL-18 (r=0,31, p<0,05), MCP-1 (r=0,36, p<0,05), MIG (r=0,50, p<0,05), TNF-α (r=0,41, p<0,05). An inverse correlation was also found in the level of blood oxygen saturation with the same indicators as follows: IL-8 (r=-0,27, p<0,05), IL-15 (r=-0,34, p<0,05), IL-18 (r=-0,31, p<0,05), MCP-1 (r=-0,40, p<0,05), MIG (r=-0,56, p<0,05), TNF-α (r=-0,45, p<0,05). IL-6 levels were significantly elevated in patients with severe COVID-19 (CT3, CT4), while no increase in IL-6 was observed in patients with moderate disease (CT1, CT2). It is noteworthy that in patients with diabetes, the highest values of IL-12, IL-9 were recorded.Conclusion. Hyperinflammatory syndrome in severe COVID-19 is manifested by high levels of IL-6, MIG, MDC, MCP-1, M-CSF, TNF-α, β, IL-8, IL-18, IL-15. With the CT-1 and CT-2, an increase in only the level of IL-18, IL-8 is noted. The identified patterns prove and make it possible to explain a number of systemic inflammatory changes that occur with COVID-19
