Theories of Postcommunist Transformation: Approaches, Debates, and Problems of Theory Building in the Second Decade of Research

The article explores the current theoretical debates on postcommunist transformations. After identifying important novel or reinvigorated approaches, three of them are critically discussed: the postcommunism approach, the governance approach, and the Europeanisation approach. The examination leads to the result that, indeed, a ‘second generation’ has emerged. It has largely overcome universalistic assumptions and gained explanatory power by more complex theoretical architectures as well as systematic time-space-embeddings or contextualisations. A final consideration makes the case for interdisciplinary and general theories of societal transformations as a necessary step in the advancement of the debate

Primate pre-arcuate cortex actively maintains persistent representations of saccades from plans to outcomes

Dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex is thought to contribute to adaptive behavior by integrating temporally dispersed, behaviorally-relevant factors. Past work has revealed a variety of neural representations preceding actions, which are involved in internal processes like planning, working memory and covert attention. Task-related activity following actions has often been reported, but so far lacks a clear interpretation. We leveraged modified versions of classic oculomotor paradigms and population recordings to show that post-saccadic activity is a dominant signal in dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex that is distinct from pre-saccadic activity. Unlike pre-saccadic activity, post-saccadic activity occurs after each saccade, although its strength and duration are modulated by task context and expected rewards. In contrast to representations preceding actions, which appear to be mixed randomly across neurons, post-saccadic activity results in representations that are highly structured at the single-neuron and population level. Overall, the properties of post-saccadic activity are consistent with those of an action memory, an internal process with a possible role in learning and updating spatial representations

Gesellschaftstransformation als sozialer Wandlungstyp: eine komparative Analyse

Der Beitrag erörtert die Frage, ob Transformationen - genauer: Gesellschaftstransformationen - einen eigenen Typ sozialen Wandels darstellen. In diesem Zusammenhang lautet die zu untersuchende Ausgangsthese, dass Gesellschaftstransformation einen eigenen sozialen Wandlungstypus mit spezifischen Merkmalen repräsentiert, der aber nicht auf die postsozialistischen Umwälzungen eingeschränkt werden kann. Vielmehr stellen letztere einen freilich herausragenden historischen Subtyp dar. Nach einigen theoretisch-methodologischen Überlegungen zur komparativen Analyse werden im ersten Schritt zunächst die postsozialistischen Umbrüche in Mittelost- und Osteuropa seit 1989 betrachtet. Unabhängig davon, ob es sich - gemessen am großen Projekt der Jahre 1989/90 - um eher fortgeschrittene 'erfolgreiche' oder weniger 'erfolgreiche' Transformationen' handelt: Nirgendwo entstehen Duplikate des Westens; Wirtschaftsordnungen, politische Systeme und Sozio-Kulturen erhalten im doppelten Sinne ihre Eigenheiten. Im zweiten Schritt wird dann in komparativer Perspektive nach historisch vergleichbaren, dabei vor allem ähnlichen Transformationen gefragt. Auf diese Weise wird geklärt, ob es sich bei Gesellschaftstransformationen um einen eigenen Typus handelt - und zwar über die postsozialistischen Fälle hinausgehend. Es werden drei Gruppen divergenter und similärer Wandlungsprozesse unterschieden: (1) archetypische Modernisierungen und neueste Globalisierung, (2) Demokratisierung und 'Entwicklung' sowie (3) 'nachholende Modernisierungen' im Osten Ende des 19. und Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. Vor dem Hintergrund der vorgestellten Vergleichsfälle erscheinen die postsozialistischen Transformationen mit ihren Phänomenen und ihren Ursachenkomplexen keineswegs als einmalig und unvergleichbar. Darauf aufbauend wird im dritten Schritt Gesellschaftstransformation als Typ sozialen Wandels hinsichtlich des Begriffes, der Struktur und Grundtypen umrissen. Im vierten Schritt werden abschließend einige Folgerungen für die (Re-)Orientierung der Transformationsforschung gezogen. (ICG2
