Analysis of Turkish Prospective Science Teachers’ Perceptions on Technology in Education
Purpose of this study was to determine and analyze Turkish pre-service science teachers\u27 perceptions on technology in terms of learning style, computer competency level, possession of a computer, and gender. The study involved 264 Turkish pre-service science teachers. Analyses were conducted through four-way ANOVA, t-tests, Mann Whitney U test and one-way ANOVAs and the results showed there were one main effect for gender and one interaction effect between gender and computer competency level. The interaction effect pointed out that the male pre-service science teachers who were weak in computer competency held more positive perceptions toward instructional technology than their counterparts
Hypothermia in a Child With Hodgkin Disease
Hypothermia is an extremely rare clinical manifestation of unknown origin in Hodgkin disease, which is generally associated with the administration of chemotherapeutic agents. We present hypothermia in a 10-year-old girl with stage IIIB nodular sclerosing type Hodgkin disease, who was previously treated with the diagnosis of immune thrombocytopenic purpura. To the best of our knowledge, this case is the first reported case of hypothermia in Hodgkin disease with combination of previously treated immune thrombocytopenic purpura Lit childhood in the English medical literature
The Importance of Cystatin-C for Predicting Nephrotoxicity in Children with Acute Leukemia and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
Determination of renal function in patients with childhood cancer by a simple and accurate test is crucial. The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of nephrotoxicity in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and evaluate the importance of serum cystatin-C for an early predictor of impairment of renal function. 27 patients (ages varied from 1.5 to 16 years, median age 10 year-old) were enrolled to this study. Serum urea, creatinine, cystatin-C concentrations and calculated creatinine clearances of the patients were determined during the treatment. Twenty (74%) of patients were male and seven (26%) were female. The frequencies of the diagnosis for ALL, AML and NHL were 13 (48.1%), 8 (29.6%) and 6 (22.3%), respectively. The mean values of cystatin C during the treatment were 0.77 +/- 0.3 mg/l, 0.86 +/- 0.5 mg/l and 0.81 +/- 0.3 mg/l, respectively. The values of urea, cystatin-C, and creatinine clearance did not differ statistically by duration of the treatment. We did not observe any renal impairment in our study group by the treatment. Cystatin-C has high values of sensitivity and specificity to predict the glomeruler filtration rate. Therefore cystatin C might be useful for determination glomeruler filtration rate in children with cancer; especially who have difficulties in collecting 24-hours urine sample
Thyroid medullary carcinoma in a teenager with Cowden syndrome
Cowden syndrome is a multisystemic cancer predisposition disorder, in which the mucocutaneous lesions are the most constant features. We present a case of Cowden syndrome in a teenage boy with hyperkeratotic papules of the facial skin, especially on the eyelids, with episcleritis, proptosis, and papillomatous lesions on the tip of the tongue and lip mucosa. In addition, two nodules in the thyroid gland were detected. On laboratory examination, the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was 34 ng/mL (normal limits: 0-3 ng/mL). Total thyroidectomy was performed. Histopathologic examination of the specimen revealed thyroid medullary carcinoma. After operation, levels of CEA decreased to normal limits
An uncommon extrapulmonary sequestration located in the upper posterior mediastinum associated with the azygos lobe in a child
Neurological complication of non Hodgkin lymphoma in childhood: experience from a single center in Turkey
Lymphomas are the third most common childhood malignant disease after leukemia and central nervous system (CNS) tumors. Early diagnosis of these complications will reduce mortality and morbidity. In this study we aimed to review the neurological complications of childhood non Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL)
The importance of chemoprophylaxis and vaccines in the prevention of recurrent meningitis
The antiproliferative and antimicrobial effects of cultivated Anabaena circinalis Rabenhorts ex Bornet and Flahault and Nostoc entophytum Bornet and Flahault
Purpose: To investigate the antiproliferative and antimicrobial effects
of cultivated Anabaena circinalis Rabenhorst Ex Bornet and Flahault
{[}Synonym: Dolichospermum sigmoideum (Nygaard) Wacklin, L. Hoffmann and
Komarek) and Nostoc entophytum Bornet and Flahault (Synonym: Nostoc
paludosum Kutzing ex Bornet and Flahault).
Methods: The algae extracts were prepared using 0.5 M Tris-HCL pH: 8.00,
N-butanol, Ethanol and Dimethyl sulfoxide, and then tested on
Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, Listeria
monocytogenes ATCC 7644, Escherichia coli O 157:H7, Pseudomonas
aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Salmonella typhimurium CCM 5445, Candida albicans
ATCC 10239 using the disc diffusion method in order to determine their
antimicrobial effects. The anti-cancer activities of these two algae
were tested against cancerous cell lines using BrdU cell proliferation
ELISA method. The inhibition of these algae ethanol and butanol extracts
were tested against Vero and HeLa carcinoma cells in concentrations of
100, 250 and 500 mu g/mL.
Results: Anabaena circinalis (AC) and Nostoc entophytum (NE)
antimicrobial properties against the tes organisms. The buffer extract
obtained from AC showed the highest level of antimicrobial activity
against L. monocytogenes ATCC 7644 while the buffer extract from NE
displayed the highest antimicrobial activity against E. coli O 157: H7.
The anti-proliferative data indicate that NE has effective anti-cancer
properties. Furthermore, the results showed that cyanobacteria species
were superior to DMSO and control groups in terms of anti-cancer
activity in tumor cells. NE exhibited significant (p < 0.05)
anti-proliferative effects at all three concentrations (100, 250, 500 mu
g/mL), compared to DMSO while AC exhibited significant
anti-proliferative activity only at 500 mu g/mL concentration (p <
0.01).
Conclusion: The results indicate that extracts possess antimicrobial and
antiproliferative antivities. However, further studies are required to
ascertain their clinical efficacy
Giant Mature Adrenal Cystic Teratoma in an Infant
Introduction: Teratomas are derived from embryonic tissues that are typically found in the gonadal and sacrococcygeal regions of adults and children. Primary teratomas in the retroperitoneum are very rare in infan
