Prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in Chinese adolescents
Since national figures on the occurrence of metabolic syndrome among Chinese adolescents are lacking, this study aims to estimate its prevalence and distribution among Chinese youngsters. The 2002 China National Nutrition and Health Survey is a nationally representative cross-sectional study. Applying the criteria for US adolescents, we estimated the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among 2761 adolescents aged 15 to 19 years. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome among Chinese adolescents overall was 3·7% (10% in US adolescents). It was 35·2 %, 23·4% and 2·3% among adolescents who were overweight (BMI 85th percentile and one or two parent(s) with metabolic syndrome, the prevalence was 46·4 %. A total of 96% of overweight adolescents had at least one and 74·1% overweight adolescents had at least two abnormalities of metabolic syndrome. Based on these figures, it is estimated that more than three million Chinese adolescents have metabolic syndrome. Both overweight and metabolic syndrome prevalence among adolescents are still relatively low in China, but the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among Chinese overweight adolescents is similar to those living in the USA
Corporate Brand Image: Antecedents, Mediating Role and Impact on Stakeholder Expectations
Corporate identity and image are shaped by the entirety of perceptions of a variety of stakeholders, both existing and potential ones, such as customers, suppliers, employees, general public, opinion makers, and government officials. Our study is an empirical investigation of corporate brand image and impact on one such stakeholder group made up of prospective employees. A large multinational, a technical and scientific research firm, a major recruiter of graduates from campuses of reputable universities across the nation was chosen as the subject. This paper develops and tests a path model of the antecedent factors affecting corporate brand image and specific expectations that stakeholders may have of a corporate brand. Based on a thorough literature review, a corporate brand image model that treated as antecedents the four constructs, awareness of organisation’s products, perceptions about culture, personality of the focal firm, and general expectations was proposed. Specific expectations that respondents may have about working with the firm was modeled to be influenced by the corporate brand image of the firm surveyed and also by the mentioned four antecedent constructs. The model is fitted to empirical data obtained from a national sample of 368 respondents using LISREL 8.5 methodology, and strong support was found for five, partial support for two of the nine hypotheses tested. Substantial evidence can be seen for the mediating role of corporate brand image in shaping specific expectations that stakeholders have from the corporate brand. Practical significance and managerial implications for marketing investments and organisational performance are detailed.
Triangle Diagram with Off-Shell Coulomb T-Matrix for (In-)Elastic Atomic and Nuclear Three-Body Processes
The driving terms in three-body theories of elastic and inelastic scattering
of a charged particle off a bound state of two other charged particles contain
the fully off-shell two-body Coulomb T-matrix describing the intermediate-state
Coulomb scattering of the projectile with each of the charged target particles.
Up to now the latter is usually replaced by the Coulomb potential, either when
using the multiple-scattering approach or when solving three-body integral
equations. General properties of the exact and the approximate on-shell driving
terms are discussed, and the accuracy of this approximation is investigated
numerically, both for atomic and nuclear processes including bound-state
excitation, for energies below and above the corresponding three-body
dissociation threshold, over the whole range of scattering angles.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, figures can be obtained upon request from the

The apparent roughness of a sand surface blown by wind from an analytical model of saltation
We present an analytical model of aeolian sand transport. The model
quantifies the momentum transfer from the wind to the transported sand by
providing expressions for the thickness of the saltation layer and the apparent
surface roughness. These expressions are derived from basic physical principles
and a small number of assumptions. The model further predicts the sand
transport rate (mass flux) and the impact threshold (the smallest value of the
wind shear velocity at which saltation can be sustained). We show that, in
contrast to previous studies, the present model's predictions are in very good
agreement with a range of experiments, as well as with numerical simulations of
aeolian saltation. Because of its physical basis, we anticipate that our model
will find application in studies of aeolian sand transport on both Earth and
Mars
Searching for solar-like oscillations in the delta Scuti star rho Puppis
Despite the shallow convective envelopes of delta Scuti pulsators, solar-like
oscillations are theoretically predicted to be excited in those stars as well.
To search for such stochastic oscillations we organised a spectroscopic
multi-site campaign for the bright, metal-rich delta Sct star rho Puppis. We
obtained a total of 2763 high-resolution spectra using four telescopes. We
discuss the reduction and analysis with the iodine cell technique, developed
for searching for low-amplitude radial velocity variations, in the presence of
high-amplitude variability. Furthermore, we have determined the angular
diameter of rho Puppis to be 1.68 \pm 0.03 mas, translating into a radius of
3.52 \pm 0.07Rsun. Using this value, the frequency of maximum power of possible
solar-like oscillations, is expected at ~43 \pm 2 c/d (498 \pm 23 muHz). The
dominant delta Scuti-type pulsation mode of rho Puppis is known to be the
radial fundamental mode which allows us to determine the mean density of the
star, and therefore an expected large frequency separation of 2.73 c/d (31.6
muHz). We conclude that 1) the radial velocity amplitudes of the delta Scuti
pulsations are different for different spectral lines; 2) we can exclude
solar-like oscillations to be present in rho Puppis with an amplitude per
radial mode larger than 0.5 m/s.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure, accepted for MNRA
Reaching micro-arcsecond astrometry with long baseline optical interferometry; application to the GRAVITY instrument
A basic principle of long baseline interferometry is that an optical path
difference (OPD) directly translates into an astrometric measurement. In the
simplest case, the OPD is equal to the scalar product between the vector
linking the two telescopes and the normalized vector pointing toward the star.
However, a too simple interpretation of this scalar product leads to seemingly
conflicting results, called here "the baseline paradox". For micro-arcsecond
accuracy astrometry, we have to model in full the metrology measurement. It
involves a complex system subject to many optical effects: from pure baseline
errors to static, quasi-static and high order optical aberrations. The goal of
this paper is to present the strategy used by the "General Relativity Analysis
via VLT InTerferometrY" instrument (GRAVITY) to minimize the biases introduced
by these defects. It is possible to give an analytical formula on how the
baselines and tip-tilt errors affect the astrometric measurement. This formula
depends on the limit-points of three type of baselines: the wide-angle
baseline, the narrow-angle baseline, and the imaging baseline. We also,
numerically, include non-common path higher-order aberrations, whose amplitude
were measured during technical time at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer.
We end by simulating the influence of high-order common-path aberrations due to
atmospheric residuals calculated from a Monte-Carlo simulation tool for
Adaptive optics systems. The result of this work is an error budget of the
biases caused by the multiple optical imperfections, including optical
dispersion. We show that the beam stabilization through both focal and pupil
tracking is crucial to the GRAVITY system. Assuming the instrument pupil is
stabilized at a 4 cm level on M1, and a field tracking below 0.2, we
show that GRAVITY will be able to reach its objective of 10as accuracy.Comment: 14 pages. Accepted by A&
Optical Interferometry of early-type stars with PAVO@CHARA. I. Fundamental stellar properties
We present interferometric observations of 7 main-sequence and 3 giant stars
with spectral types from B2 to F6 using the PAVO beam combiner at the CHARA
array. We have directly determined the angular diameters for these objects with
an average precision of 2.3%. We have also computed bolometric fluxes using
available photometry in the visible and infrared wavelengths, as well as
space-based ultraviolet spectroscopy. Combined with precise \textit{Hipparcos}
parallaxes, we have derived a set of fundamental stellar properties including
linear radius, luminosity and effective temperature. Fitting the latter to
computed isochrone models, we have inferred masses and ages of the stars. The
effective temperatures obtained are in good agreement (at a 3% level) with
nearly-independent temperature estimations from spectroscopy. They validate
recent sixth-order polynomial (B-V)- empirical relations
\citep{Boyajian2012a}, but suggest that a more conservative third-order
solution \citep{vanBelle2009} could adequately describe the
(V-K)- relation for main-sequence stars of spectral type A0 and
later. Finally, we have compared mass values obtained combining surface gravity
with inferred stellar radius (\textit{gravity mass}) and as a result of the
comparison of computed luminosity and temperature values with stellar
evolutionary models (\textit{isochrone mass}). The strong discrepancy between
isochrone and gravity mass obtained for one of the observed stars,
\,Lyr, suggests that determination of the stellar atmosphere parameters
should be revised.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
