    Wealth Inequality and Conditionality in Cash Transfers : A Politico-Economic Approach

    We present a model that offers an explanation whether a condition is attached to cash transfers affects the elimination of child labor, taking into account wealth heterogeneity (especially land). The cash transfer program designs (conditional vs. unconditional) is determined through a political process. We show that when wealth distribution is left-skewed, median voters support conditional cash transfers, which reduces child labor. Unconditional cash transfers enjoy political support when the wealth distribution is less skewed; however, child labor remains. Our cross-country estimation confirms that countries with a greater wealth inequality are adopted conditional cash transfer in a number of developing and transition economies. The effects of sibling differences on child labor and cash transfer programs are also examined

    Pathobiology and Chemoprevention of Bladder Cancer

    Our understanding of the pathogenesis of bladder cancer has improved considerably over the past decade. Translating these novel pathobiological discoveries into therapies, prevention, or strategies to manage patients who are suspected to have or who have been diagnosed with bladder cancer is the ultimate goal. In particular, the chemoprevention of bladder cancer development is important, since urothelial cancer frequently recurs, even if the primary cancer is completely removed. The numerous alterations of both oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes that have been implicated in bladder carcinogenesis represent novel targets for therapy and prevention. In addition, knowledge about these genetic alterations will help provide a better understanding of the biological significance of preneoplastic lesions of bladder cancer. Animal models for investigating bladder cancer development and prevention can also be developed based on these alterations. This paper summarizes the results of recent preclinical and clinical chemoprevention studies and discusses screening for bladder cancer

    Buckling of C60 whiskers

    The authors demonstrated the mechanics of materials for crystalline whiskers composed of C60 molecules; compressive deformation of the whiskers was observed by in situ transmission electron microscopy with simultaneous force measurement by means of an optical cantilever method, as used in atomic force microscopy. In response to compression along the long axis, the whiskers bent first elastically, then buckled. A whisker with 160 nm diameter fractured brittlely at a strain of 0.08. According to Euler\u27s formula, Young\u27s modulus of the whisker was estimated to be 32–54 GPa, which is 160%–650% of that of C60 bulk crystals

    Photoemission spectroscopy with low-energy tunable photons on oxygen-deficient iron-based oxypnictide superconductors NdFeAsO0.85 (Tc=52K) reveals a distinct photon-energy dependence of the electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF). A clear shift of the leading-edge can be observed in the superconducting states with 9.5 eV photons, while a clear Fermi cutoff with little leading-edge shift can be observed with 6.0 eV photons. The results are indicative of the superconducting gap opening not on the hole-like ones around Gamma (0,0) point but on the electron-like sheets around M(pi,pi) point.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Time- and Learner-Dependent Hidden Markov Model for Writing Process Analysis Using Keystroke Log Data

    Teaching writing strategies based on writing processes has attracted wide attention as a method for developing writing skills. The writing process can be generally defined as a sequence of subtasks, such as planning, formulation, and revision. Therefore, instructor feedback is often given based on sequence patterns of those subtasks. For such feedback, instructors need to analyze sequence patterns for all learners, which becomes problematic as the number of learners increases. To resolve this problem, this study proposes a new machine-learning method that estimates sequence patterns from keystroke log data. Specifically, we propose an extension of the Gaussian hidden Markov model that incorporates parameters representing temporal change in a subtask appearance distribution for each learner. Furthermore, we propose a collapsed Gibbs sampling algorithm as the parameter estimation method for the proposed model. We demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed model by applying it to actual keystroke log datasets

    The ASTRO-H X-ray Observatory

    The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions initiated by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). ASTRO-H will investigate the physics of the high-energy universe via a suite of four instruments, covering a very wide energy range, from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. These instruments include a high-resolution, high-throughput spectrometer sensitive over 0.3-2 keV with high spectral resolution of Delta E < 7 eV, enabled by a micro-calorimeter array located in the focal plane of thin-foil X-ray optics; hard X-ray imaging spectrometers covering 5-80 keV, located in the focal plane of multilayer-coated, focusing hard X-ray mirrors; a wide-field imaging spectrometer sensitive over 0.4-12 keV, with an X-ray CCD camera in the focal plane of a soft X-ray telescope; and a non-focusing Compton-camera type soft gamma-ray detector, sensitive in the 40-600 keV band.     The Quiescent Intracluster Medium in the Core of the Perseus Cluster

    Clusters of galaxies are the most massive gravitationally-bound objects in the Universe and are still forming. They are thus important probes of cosmological parameters and a host of astrophysical processes. Knowledge of the dynamics of the pervasive hot gas, which dominates in mass over stars in a cluster, is a crucial missing ingredient. It can enable new insights into mechanical energy injection by the central supermassive black hole and the use of hydrostatic equilibrium for the determination of cluster masses. X-rays from the core of the Perseus cluster are emitted by the 50 million K diffuse hot plasma filling its gravitational potential well. The Active Galactic Nucleus of the central galaxy NGC1275 is pumping jetted energy into the surrounding intracluster medium, creating buoyant bubbles filled with relativistic plasma. These likely induce motions in the intracluster medium and heat the inner gas preventing runaway radiative cooling; a process known as Active Galactic Nucleus Feedback. Here we report on Hitomi X-ray observations of the Perseus cluster core, which reveal a remarkably quiescent atmosphere where the gas has a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 164+/-10 km/s in a region 30-60 kpc from the central nucleus. A gradient in the line-of-sight velocity of 150+/-70 km/s is found across the 60 kpc image of the cluster core. Turbulent pressure support in the gas is 4% or less of the thermodynamic pressure, with large scale shear at most doubling that estimate. We infer that total cluster masses determined from hydrostatic equilibrium in the central regions need little correction for turbulent pressure.Comment: 31 pages, 11 Figs, published in Nature July
