    Self-reported domain-specific and accelerometer-based physical activity and sedentary behaviour in relation to psychological distress among an urban Asian population

    Background: The interpretation of previous studies on the association of physical activity and sedentary behaviour with psychological health is limited by the use of mostly self-reported physical activity and sedentary behaviour, and a focus on Western populations. We aimed to explore the association of self-reported and devise-based measures of physical activity and sedentary behaviour domains on psychological distress in an urban multi-ethnic Asian population. Methods: From a population-based cross-sectional study of adults aged 18-79 years, data were used from an overall sample (n = 2653) with complete self-reported total physical activity/sedentary behaviour and domain-specific physical activity data, and a subsample (n = 703) with self-reported domain-specific sedentary behaviour and accelerometry data. Physical activity and sedentary behaviour data were collected using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), a domain-specific sedentary behaviour questionnaire and accelerometers. The Kessler Screening Scale (K6) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) were used to assess psychological distress. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals, adjusted for socio-demographic and lifestyle characteristics. Results: The sample comprised 45.0% men (median age = 45.0 years). The prevalence of psychological distress based on the K6 and GHQ-12 was 8.4% and 21.7%, respectively. In the adjusted model, higher levels of self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were associated with significantly higher odds for K6 (OR = 1.47 [1.03-2.10]; p-trend = 0.03) but not GHQ-12 (OR = 0.97 [0.77-1.23]; p-trend = 0.79), when comparing the highest with the lowest tertile. Accelerometry-assessed MVPA was not significantly associated with K6 (p-trend = 0.50) nor GHQ-12 (p-trend = 0.74). The highest tertile of leisure-time physical activity, but not work- or transport-domain activity, was associated with less psychological distress using K6 (OR = 0.65 [0.43-0.97]; p-trend = 0.02) and GHQ-12 (OR = 0.72 [0.55-0.93]; p-trend = 0.01). Self-reported sedentary behaviour was not associated with K6 (p-trend = 0.90) and GHQ-12 (p-trend = 0.33). The highest tertile of accelerometry-assessed sedentary behaviour was associated with significantly higher odds for K6 (OR = 1.93 [1.00-3.75]; p-trend = 0.04), but not GHQ-12 (OR = 1.34 [0.86-2.08]; p-trend = 0.18). Conclusions: Higher levels of leisure-time physical activity and lower levels of accelerometer-based sedentary behaviour were associated with lower psychological distress. This study underscores the importance of assessing accelerometer-based and domain-specific activity in relation to mental health, instead of solely focusing on total volume of activity

    Dissecting the genetic components of a quantitative trait locus for blood pressure and renal pathology on rat chromosome 3

    Background: We have previously confirmed the importance of rat chromosome 3 (RNO3) genetic loci on blood pressure elevation, pulse pressure (PP) variability and renal pathology during salt challenge in the stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive (SHRSP) rat. The aims of this study were to generate a panel of RNO3 congenic sub-strains to genetically dissect the implicated loci and identify positional candidate genes by microarray expression profiling and analysis of next-generation sequencing data. Method and results: A panel of congenic sub-strains were generated containing Wistar-Kyoto (WKY)-introgressed segments of varying size on the SHRSP genetic background, focused within the first 50 Mbp of RNO3. Haemodynamic profiling during salt challenge demonstrated significantly reduced systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and PP variability in SP.WKYGla3a, SP.WKYGla3c, SP.WKYGla3d and SP.WKYGla3e sub-strains. Only SBP and DBP were significantly reduced during salt challenge in SP.WKYGla3b and SP.WKYGla3f sub-strains, whereas SP.WKYGla3g rats did not differ in haemodynamic response to SHRSP. Those sub-strains demonstrating significantly reduced PP variability during salt challenge also demonstrated significantly reduced renal pathology and proteinuria. Microarray expression profiling prioritized two candidate genes for blood pressure regulation (Dnm1, Tor1b), localized within the common congenic interval shared by SP.WKYGla3d and SP.WKYGla3f strains, and one candidate gene for salt-induced PP variability and renal pathology (Rabgap1), located within the region unique to the SP.WKYGla3d strain. Comparison of next-generation sequencing data identified variants within additional positional genes that are likely to affect protein function. Conclusion: This study has identified distinct intervals on RNO3-containing genes that may be important for blood pressure regulation and renal pathology during salt challenge

    Utilization of geopolymer in wood wool insulation boards:Design optimization, development and performance characteristics

    This study investigates the substitution of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with geopolymer in the production of wood wool geopolymer boards (WWGB), offering insights into manufacturing methods, design parameters, and performance characteristics. The composite formulation involves fibre pre-treatment, adjustment of precursor components, and control of activator compositions. The optimized formulation results in a lightweight composite with a density of 392 kg māˆ’3 and porosity of 76 %, meeting prescribed minimum compressive (20 kPa) and bending strength (1700 kPa) requirements. The inclusion of natural fibres influences the optimal Na2O concentration and modulus for strength, with treated fibres recommended for higher modulus applications and improved strengths. Furthermore, it exhibits low thermal conductivity at 77 mW māˆ’1 Kāˆ’1, minimal moisture sorption, and low vapour resistance, offering a sustainable alternative in the field of insulation materials.</p

    Complexity Classification of Conjugated Clifford Circuits

    Clifford circuits - i.e. circuits composed of only CNOT, Hadamard, and pi/4 phase gates - play a central role in the study of quantum computation. However, their computational power is limited: a well-known result of Gottesman and Knill states that Clifford circuits are efficiently classically simulable. We show that in contrast, "conjugated Clifford circuits" (CCCs) - where one additionally conjugates every qubit by the same one-qubit gate U - can perform hard sampling tasks. In particular, we fully classify the computational power of CCCs by showing that essentially any non-Clifford conjugating unitary U can give rise to sampling tasks which cannot be efficiently classically simulated to constant multiplicative error, unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses. Furthermore, by standard techniques, this hardness result can be extended to allow for the more realistic model of constant additive error, under a plausible complexity-theoretic conjecture.     Pricing and low-carbon investment decisions in an emission dependent supply chain under a carbon labelling scheme

    A low-carbon policy attracts the interests of businesses, consumers, and policy makers. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how a carbon labelling scheme could be integrated into operational decision-making for manufacturers and retailers. Three game theoretic models of a supply chain with one manufacturer and one retailer are built to investigate a manufacturer and retailerā€™s pricing and investment decision for products with different initial carbon footprints considering consumer environmental awareness. Through a systematic comparison and numerical analysis, the results show that a carbon labelling scheme can significantly reduce the overall carbon emission supply chain and have an initially negative impact on the manufacturer and retailerā€™s profits. However, in the mediumā€“long run, manufacturers and retailers could yet achieve profitability through continuously investing in low-carbon technology

    A relation between the frequency distributions of sieve diameters and fall velocities is developed. The relation shows that if the sieve diameters of a sediment are log-normally distributed, the fall velocities will also have this distribution, but with a different standard deviation which can be calculated. The results of detailed measurements of the fall velocities of two different natural sands are presented, and the distributions of fall velocities are found to be in good agreement with the predicted distributions. The sedimentation diameters determined from the measured fall velocities agree very well with those predicted from the sieve diameters by the Inter-Agency Committee on Water Resources [1957]

    A Wave Function Describing Superfluidity in a Perfect Crystal

    We propose a many-body wave function that exhibits both diagonal and off-diagonal long-range order. Incorporating short-range correlations due to interatomic repulsion, this wave function is shown to allow condensation of zero-point lattice vibrations and phase rigidity. In the presence of an external velocity field, such a perfect crystal will develop non-classical rotational inertia, exhibiting the supersolid behavior. In a sample calculation we show that the superfluid fraction in this state can be as large as of order 0.01 in a reasonable range of microscopic parameters.     Nonclassical rotational behavior at the vicinity of the lamda point

    The rotational property of a quantum liquid at the vicinity of the lambda point is examined. In a liquid helium 4 just above the lambda point, under the strong influence of Bose statistics, the coherent many-body wave function grows to an intermediate size between a macroscopic and a microscopic one, which is of a different nature from the thermal fluctuations. It must reflect in the rotational properties such as the moment of inertia. Beginning with the bosons without the condensate, we make a perturbation calculation of its susceptibility with respect to the repulsive interaction, and examine how, with decreasing temperature, the growth of the coherent wave function gradually changes the rotational behavior of a liquid:The moment of inertia slightly decreases just above the lambda point. This means that at the vicinity of the lambda point, the mechanical superfluid density does not always agree with the thermodynamical one.We compare the result to the experiment by Hess and Fairbank. A new interpretation of the shear viscosity just above the lambda point is given from this viewpoint.Comment: 12pages, 5figure
