    “Maniac” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”: A Novel Adaptation of Two TV Series for Classroom Undergraduate Psychiatry Education in an Age of COVID-19 Social Distancing

    Aim: Psychiatry has traditionally been taught bedside. Multiple ethical and logistics issues preclude use of certain patient groups, and in the current COVID-19 pandemic, there is the additional obstacle of not being able to access bedside patients. There is utility in using new media, e.g., television and movies, in psychiatry education. Methods: “Maniac” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”, both available on Netflix, were used in an undergraduate psychiatry module to illustrate clinical lessons regarding schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder respectively. Results: “Maniac” was helpful in illustrating subtle changes in affect, occupational and social dysfunction, and showcasing disrupted family dynamics and distress from experiencing hallucinations and delusions. “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” was instructional in crystallising psychopathology of borderline personality disorder and providing more nuanced, less cross-sectional views of psychiatric illness. Conclusions: Even though television and movies will and should not replace face-to-face bedside teaching as a primary mode of education, they are an adjunct to stimulate discussion and observe psychopathologies that are ethically difficult to capture. Both of them can be used judiciously in the current COVID-19 pandemic as bedside teaching substitutes

    Vehicles may provide an infotainment experience that is hosted by a head unit or other computing device. The head unit may execute a native operating system that provides an execution environment in which an operating system client may execute to support execution of a different operating system hosted by another computing device (e.g., a smartphone, laptop computer, tablet computer, etc.). The head unit may require that the computing device physically interconnect with the head unit as the head unit may not support wireless connections (or only support limited wireless connections in the form of bandwidth limited connection – e.g., personal area network connections, such as Bluetooth® connections). Techniques described in this disclosure provide a bridge device for enabling wireless connections between the head unit and the computing devices for wireless projection of the different operating system, where the bridge device provides the physical interconnection required by the head unit while maintaining the wireless connection with the computing device to support wireless projection of the different operating system

    Nanocrystalline Ge Flash Memories: Electrical Characterization and Trap Engineering

    Conventional floating gate non-volatile memories (NVMs) present critical issues for device scalability beyond the sub-90 nm node, such as gate length and tunnel oxide thickness reduction. Nanocrystalline germanium (nc-Ge) quantum dot flash memories are fully CMOS compatible technology based on discrete isolated charge storage nodules which have the potential of pushing further the scalability of conventional NVMs. Quantum dot memories offer lower operating voltages as compared to conventional floating-gate (FG) Flash memories due to thinner tunnel dielectrics which allow higher tunneling probabilities. The isolated charge nodules suppress charge loss through lateral paths, thereby achieving a superior charge retention time. Despite the considerable amount of efforts devoted to the study of nanocrystal Flash memories, the charge storage mechanism remains obscure. Interfacial defects of the nanocrystals seem to play a role in charge storage in recent studies, although storage in the nanocrystal conduction band by quantum confinement has been reported earlier. In this work, a single transistor memory structure with threshold voltage shift, Vth, exceeding ~1.5 V corresponding to interface charge trapping in nc-Ge, operating at 0.96 MV/cm, is presented. The trapping effect is eliminated when nc-Ge is synthesized in forming gas thus excluding the possibility of quantum confinement and Coulomb blockade effects. Through discharging kinetics, the model of deep level trap charge storage is confirmed. The trap energy level is dependent on the matrix which confines the nc-Ge.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA

    The use of Mindfulness Acceptance Commitment (MAC) approach for Malaysian elite triathletes

    Mindfulness Acceptance Commitment (MAC) approach has been introduced into the sport psychology field and has shown a lot of interest in the applied practices. Athletes who receive MAC approach are taught to deal with challenging internal experiences in a non-judgmental way, choosing to persist with their task-at-hand despite discomforts and to remain focused on being grounded at the present moment. In Malaysia, the elite triathletes have not been exposed to the MAC approach before. This paper aims to describe how the MAC approach was provided to the Malaysian elite triathletes. MAC was taught over six weeks, with one MAC theme introduced per week. Each triathlete was given a one-on-one session of 60-90 minutes per week with homework and practical exercises. After six weeks, the triathletes reported marked improvement in their sport and additional improvements in other domains of their life. Considering the promising improvements of the elite triathletes who received the MAC approach, it is worth considering that the MAC approach should be adapted and incorporated into the triathlon sport

    The ultra-brief psychological interventions (UBPI) was created in 2018 to empower healthcare providers with psychological skills that can be delivered within a short period. Techniques used within UBPI were adopted from a variety of well established psychotherapies and distilled into its core essentials. This enabled practitioners of UBPI to deliver specific psychological skills in the appropriate context to the client within a period of 15–20 min. UBPI was also manualised to standardised training of practitioners. During the novel coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, UBPI was modified to suit the unique psychological demands of the pandemic. This article presents how UBPI was adapted and used with healthcare providers dealing with COVID-19 and also with the public who required psychological first aid (PFA)

This article attempts to explore some of these behaviour changes from a behaviourist perspective in order to get a better understanding of the rationale behind the changes

    Teaching epidemiology and biostatistics: A peer-led teaching module for postgraduate psychiatry student

    Background and Objective: Biostatistics and epidemiology have been integral subjects in any postgraduate courses, including medical specialties Master programs. Both are widely accepted as among the difficult and confusing subjects, which worsen by lack of adequate exposure and often, time constraints. Hence, peer-led learning approach was proposed as a viable option to the traditional lecturer-driven learning style. Method: The peer-led approach intends to promote targeted learning and conceptual understanding, instead of widely sweeping learning, which is rather directionless and could cause information overload. Discussion: Students were divided into two groups, namely humanities-inclined group and science-inclined group. Different pedagogical methods to address the different groups were discussed. Conclusion: This approach helps to make the learning more palatable, boosting knowledge retention and fostering camaraderie spirit among colleagues
