    Dietzia papillomatosis sp. nov., a novel actinomycete isolated from the skin of an immunocompetent patient with confluent and reticulated papillomatosis

    An actinomycete isolated from an immunocompetent patient suffering from confluent and reticulated papillomatosis was characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The organism had chemotaxonomic and morphological properties that were consistent with its assignment to the genus Dietzia and it formed a distinct phyletic line within the Dietzia 16S rRNA gene tree. It shared a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 98.3 % with its nearest neighbour, the type strain of Dietzia cinnamea, and could be distinguished from the type strains of all Dietzia species using a combination of phenotypic properties. It is apparent from genotypic and phenotypic data that the organism represents a novel species in the genus Dietzia. The name proposed for this taxon is Dietzia papillomatosis; the type strain is N 1280T (=DSM 44961T=NCIMB 14145T)

    Sentiment-Based Assessment Of Electronic Mixed-Motive Communication - A Comparison Of Approaches

    In this paper, we seek to analyse specific types of bilateral electronic communication processes, namely such processes where there is a distinction between individual goals of the communicating parties and their joint goals. We argue that there exists a distinction between successful and unsuccessful processes. This distinction is manifest in the communication patterns used by the participants. Sentiment analysis can enable researchers to identify these distinctions automatically, based on a classification model previously trained for the exact type of communication process. This paper discusses an adaption of sentiment-based techniques for the domain of electronic business negotiations

    Imaging the Haro 6-10 Infrared Companion

    We present an infrared imaging study of the low-mass pre-main-sequence binary system Haro 6-10. This system is one of a handful in which the optically visible primary has the characteristics of a normal T Tauri star, while the secondary is a so-called "infrared companion" (IRC), a strongly extincted object that emits most of its luminosity in the infrared. A speckle holographic technique was used to produce nearly diffraction-limited images on three nights over a 1 yr period starting in late 1997. The images show that the IRC is obscured and surrounded by a compact, irregular, and variable nebula. This structure is in striking contrast to the well-ordered edge-on disk associated with HK Tauri B, the extincted companion to another T Tauri star of similar age. A new, resolved intensity peak was found 0".4 southwest of the IRC. We suggest that it may represent light scattered by a clump of dusty material illuminated by starlight escaping along an outflow-carved cavity in the IRC envelope. The primary star became fainter and the companion became more extended during the observing period

    A New Brown Dwarf Desert? A Scarcity of Wide Ultracool Binaries

    We present the results of a deep-imaging search for wide companions to low-mass stars and brown dwarfs using NSFCam on IRTF. We searched a sample of 132 M7-L8 dwarfs to magnitude limits of J∼20.5J \sim 20.5 and K∼18.5K \sim 18.5, corresponding to secondary-primary mass ratios of ∼0.5\sim 0.5. No companions were found with separations between 2{\arcsec} to 31{\arcsec} (∼\sim40 AU to ∼\sim1000 AU). This null result implies a wide companion frequency below 2.3% at the 95% confidence level within the sensitivity limits of the survey. Preliminary modeling efforts indicate that we could have detected 85% of companions more massive than 0.05M⊙0.05 M_{\odot} and 50% above 0.03M⊙0.03 M_{\odot}.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables: accepted to the Astronomical Journa

    The Scottish Government’s Strategic Framework for Action on Palliative and End of Life Care sets out a vision of universal access to palliative care by 2021. This includes individuals, families and carers having timely and focused conversations with appropriately skilled professionals to plan end of life care, in accordance with their needs and preferences. The vision will be achieved by widening the range of health and care staff providing palliative care, delivering appropriate training, and supporting clinical and health economic evaluations of palliative and end of life care models. Despite care homes being a key location where older people die, access to specialist palliative care is limited. Staff often feel inadequately trained or prepared to look after people who are dying. Consequently, care home residents are more likely to die in hospital, with uncontrolled symptoms, or without adequate care planning in place

    Ligament Mediated Fragmentation of Viscoelastic Liquids

    The breakup and atomization of complex fluids can be markedly different than the analogous processes in a simple Newtonian fluid. Atomization of paint, combustion of fuels containing antimisting agents, as well as physiological processes such as sneezing are common examples in which the atomized liquid contains synthetic or biological macromolecules that result in viscoelastic fluid characteristics. Here, we investigate the ligament-mediated fragmentation dynamics of viscoelastic fluids in three different canonical flows. The size distributions measured in each viscoelastic fragmentation process show a systematic broadening from the Newtonian solvent. In each case, the droplet sizes are well described by Gamma distributions which correspond to a fragmentation-coalescence scenario. We use a prototypical axial step strain experiment together with high-speed video imaging to show that this broadening results from the pronounced change in the corrugated shape of viscoelastic ligaments as they separate from the liquid core. These corrugations saturate in amplitude and the measured distributions for viscoelastic liquids in each process are given by a universal probability density function, corresponding to a Gamma distribution with n_{min}=4. The breadth of this size distribution for viscoelastic filaments is shown to be constrained by a geometrical limit which can not be exceeded in ligament-mediated fragmentation phenomena.DuPont MIT Allianc

    Reducing time in acute hospitals: A stepped-wedge randomised control trial of a specialist palliative care intervention in residential care homes

    Background: Care home residents are frequently transferred to hospital, rather than provided with appropriate and timely specialist care in the care home. Aim: To determine whether a model of care providing specialist palliative care in care homes, called Specialist Palliative Care Needs Rounds, could reduce length of stay in hospital. Design: Stepped-wedge randomised control trial. The primary outcome was length of stay in acute care (over 24-h duration), with secondary outcomes being the number and cost of hospitalisations. Care homes were randomly assigned to cross over from control to intervention using a random number generator; masking was not possible due to the nature of the intervention. Analyses were by intention to treat. The trial was registered with ANZCTR: ACTRN12617000080325. Data were collected between 1 February 2017 and 30 June 2018. Setting/participants: 1700 residents in 12 Australian care homes for older people. Results: Specialist Palliative Care Needs Rounds led to reduced length of stay in hospital (unadjusted difference: 0.5 days; adjusted difference: 0.22 days with 95% confidence interval: −0.44, −0.01 and p = 0.038). The intervention also provided a clinically significant reduction in the number of hospitalisations by 23%, from 5.6 to 4.3 per facility-month. A conservative estimate of annual net cost-saving from reduced admissions was A1,759,011(US1,759,011 (US1.3 m; UK£0.98 m). Conclusion: The model of care significantly reduces hospitalisations through provision of outreach by specialist palliative care clinicians. The data offer substantial evidence for Specialist Palliative Care Needs Rounds to reduce hospitalisations in older people approaching end of life, living in care homes
