A recent survey of 267 dialects of Dutch (SAND; Barbiers et al. 2005) provides 6 cases of doubling in syntactic chains

An Outcome Evaluation of Marble Retreat\u27s Brief, Intensive Psychotherapy Program

Marble Retreat is an interdenominational psychotherapy treatment facility dedicated to ·eating clergy in crisis. Its mission is to facilitate healing and restoration to those who are in ocational Christian ministry through a Christ-centered approach to brief, intensive sychotherapy. The doors of Marble Retreat have been open since 1974. Over the past 33 years, 1arble Retreat has worked with over 3000 clergy in crisis. Recently, Marble Retreat has hanged directorship for the first time in its operation. In 2003, the Board of Directors of Marble ~etreat officially appointed Steven Cappa, PsyD and his wife Patti Cappa, MS, LMFT, CAC II ) oversee ministry operations. In an attempt to assess both the strengths and areas of growth in the current treatment 10dality employed by Marble Retreat, an outcome evaluation was conducted using a quasixperimental pre-test/post-test and 6-month follow-up research design. In particular, the esearch assessed the treatment outcomes of clients who enrolled at Marble Retreat from January 006 thru February 2007. Included are a brief history of Marble Retreat and its philosophy of treatment, as well as a review of the existing empirical research on the individual functioning of energy. At posttest Marble Retreat participants showed significantly reduced psychological [stress, improved marital adjustment, and increased spiritual well-being. It is also concluded 1at at a 6-9 month follow-up the effects of treatment were sustained in psychological mctioning and spiritual well-being, but not in marital adjustment. No differences were found in ffects of 8 and 12 day treatment programs, which supports the decision to move to an 8 day treatment model

The Lack of Full Pro Drop as a Consequence of Featural Overspecification

    Get PDF
Despite the enormous attention that pro drop has received in the linguistic literature, there is no generally accepted answer to the question why relatively rich Germanic languages do not have argumental null subjects, neither is there a fundamental answer to the question why English would not allow them in at least 3SG contexts, where the agreement marker uniquely identifies the features of the unexpressed subject, just like in Italian. We argue that a closer inspection of the Germanic languages reveals that tense and agreement are expressed mono-morphemically, whereas Romance pro drop languages have distinct morphemes for tense and agreement. This allows us to postulate that the lack of pro drop in Germanic languages is a consequence of overspecification: the presence of the tense features makes licensing of a null subject impossible. Germanic variants that have partial pro drop, such as Frisian and Bavarian German, can be naturally accommodated in our approach by reference to complementizer agreement

A New Bootstrap Goodness-of-Fit Test for Normal Linear Regression Models

In this work, the distributional properties of the goodness-of-fit term in likelihood-based information criteria are explored. These properties are then leveraged to construct a novel goodness-of-fit test for normal linear regression models that relies on a non-parametric bootstrap. Several simulation studies are performed to investigate the properties and efficacy of the developed procedure, with these studies demonstrating that the bootstrap test offers distinct advantages as compared to other methods of assessing the goodness-of-fit of a normal linear regression model

MUMS: Mobile Urinalysis for Maternal Screening

Pregnant women in low-income communities often lack access to the necessary healthcare for successful births. This is frequently due to the high costs of medical care, the remote location of patients, and the infrequency of primary care medical visits. To address this inequity, we have created a mobile application and imaging unit that allows for the low-cost implementation of urinalysis testing, which will aid in the detection of warning signs for prenatal health risks. From a single photo taken with a tablet camera, our application digitizes the results of a standard urinalysis test strip, displays the test results, and tracks the patient test histories. Using early, affordable urinalysis, we can increase the rates early detection, intervention, and successful pregnancies. Our results have shown that our solution can accurately estimate the concentrations of biological compounds found in urine when compared to visual approximations of color comparison charts. Our device is not only more efficient than the alternative, but also more efficient at screening for and detecting potentially fatal health conditions in pregnant women. Ultimately, our solution is a frugal and mobile urinalysis alternative that can feasibly be implemented in rural communities in order to increase early detection of pregnancy complications, allow for early intervention, and improve the probability of successful pregnancies

    The Casualty of Home

Casualty of Home is a novel-in-stories focusing largely on the displacement felt due to situation or family. Often, members of a family have trouble making connections with each other, for each has its own thoughts, desires and expectations. Still, they have something rudimentary in common: blood. Because they are related, family members are inclined to care for individuals they might not even know, much less love. Spanning three generations, the characters in Casualty of Home deal with the constraints of family, the pressures of adolescence, and the limitations of the rural Southern culture in which they live. The characters face obstacles that force them to question their relationships to one another and their concept of self. These stories are inspired by the ones of my family— the characters draw upon the strongest attributes of my own relatives and their stories. By doing this, I hope to comment on the strength with which it sometimes takes to get through a day and how, sometimes, rebelling against circumstances can be done with just a word
