    Keeping venomous snakes in the netherlands:A harmless hobby or a public health threat?

    Objective: To describe the incidence of venomous snakebites and the hospital treatment thereof (if any) amongst private individuals who keep venomous snakes as a hobby. Structure: Descriptive study. Method: Private keepers of venomous snakes were invited via the social media Facebook, Hyves, Twitter, Google Plus, Linked In and two large discussion forums to fill in an online questionnaire on a purely voluntary and anonymous basis. Results: In the period from 1 September 2012 to 31 December 2012, 86 questionnaires were completed by individuals who keep venomous snakes as a hobby. One-third of the venomous snake keepers stated that they had at some point been bitten by a venomous snake. Out of those, two-thirds needed hospital treatment and one-third of those bitten required at least one, sometimes more, doses of antiserum. The chances of being bitten increased the more venomous snakes a person kept. An inventory of the collections of venomous snakes being kept further revealed that no antiserum exists for 16 of the species, including for the most commonly held venomous snake, the coral cobra. Conclusion: Keeping venomous snakes as a hobby is not without danger. Although in the majority of snakebite cases no antiserum had to be administered, there is nevertheless a significant risk of morbidity and sequel. Preventing snakebites in the first place remains the most important safety measure since there are no antiserums available for a substantial number of venomous snakes.</p

    Patterns, processes, and conservation management consequences of intraspecific diversity, illustrated by fishes from recently glaciated lakes

    Patterns in phenotypic and genotypic diversity within many species are becoming increasingly apparent, although there remain many species for which such patterns have yet to be described adequately. Fishes from recently glaciated ecosystems are likely to be particularly rich in intraspecific diversity, yet current conservation management strategies are, in many parts of the world, particularly in Europe, conventionally and overwhelmingly focused on species, regardless of competing species concepts, and appropriate policies for managing diversity at a sub-specific level still have to be developed. Occasional attempts to protect certain vulnerable ecotypes and proposed alternative units of conservation (e.g. ‘Pragmatic Species’ or ‘Evolutionarily Significant Units’) reinforce the conventional primacy of contemporary expressed patterns of variation. Intraspecific phenotypic and genotypic patterns are ultimately the result of complex processes of divergence; conservation approaches that focus on the products of evolution largely ignore the processes that generate and maintain those patterns. Policies that acknowledge the continuation of evolution, the derivation of novel diversity over often very short time spans and the role of environment in initiating and perpetuating these processes are poorly integrated into management strategy. To address possible deficits, where intraspecific diversity is not addressed in management practice, we believe it to be important first to characterize hidden genetic and phenotypic diversity, which may intimate eco-evolutionary processes, initially among species of high conservation status. A second step should be to use an approach to intraspecific diversity that illuminates the ultimate processes and mechanisms that bring about that diversity, which also concedes the central role of the environment and affords adequate protection to the ecosystems that drive these processes, such as the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Ecosystems approach

    Neutron-capture gamma-ray study of levels in Ba135 and description of nuclear levels in the interacting-boson-fermion model

    We have performed neutron-capture gamma-ray studies on natural and enriched targets of 134Ba in order to investigate the nuclear levels of 135Ba. The low-energy level spectra were compared with the calculations using the interacting-boson-fermion model (IBFM) and the cluster-vibration model. The level densities up to 5 MeV that are calculated within the IBFM are in accordance with the constant temperature Fermi gas model. From the spin distribution we have determined the corresponding spin cutoff parameter σ and compared it to the prediction from nuclear systematics
