    Corn or sorghum grain in growing-finishing rations (with and without added copper, Vitamin E, Biotin or Aureo SP-250)

    Pigs fed corn gained faster than those fed sorghum grain in one trial. The reverse was true in a second trial. Overall average daily gain figures were almost identical (1.67 lbs. per day for corn; 1.65 lbs. per day for sorghum). Average feed efficiency favored corn slightly (3.03 to 3.10). Adding 250 ppm copper to the diet significantly increased weight gain in one of five trials. Adding either vitamin E, biotin, or Aureo SP-250 did not significantly increase average daily gain or improve feed efficiency. Barrows gained 15% faster than gilts.     Recognizability bias in citizen science photographs

    Citizen science and automated collection methods increasinglydepend on image recognition to provide the amountsof observational data research and management needs.Recognition models, meanwhile, also require large amounts ofdata from these sources, creating a feedback loop between themethods and tools. Species that are harder to recognize, bothfor humans and machine learning algorithms, are likely to beunder-reported, and thus be less prevalent in the trainingdata. As a result, the feedback loop may hamper trainingmostly for species that already pose the greatest challenge. Inthis study, we trained recognition models for various taxa, andfound evidence for a‘recognizability bias’, where species thatare more readily identified by humans and recognitionmodels alike are more prevalent in the available image data.This pattern is present across multiple taxa, and does notappear to relate to differences in picture quality, biologicaltraits or data collection metrics other than recognizability.     Nonplanar integrability at two loops

    In this article we compute the action of the two loop dilatation operator on restricted Schur polynomials that belong to the su(2) sector, in the displaced corners approximation. In this non-planar large N limit, operators that diagonalize the one loop dilatation operator are not corrected at two loops. The resulting spectrum of anomalous dimensions is related to a set of decoupled harmonic oscillators, indicating integrability in this sector of the theory at two loops. The anomalous dimensions are a non-trivial function of the 't Hooft coupling, with a spectrum that is continuous and starting at zero at large N, but discrete at finite N.Comment: version to appear in JHE

    Matching nitrogen demand of plants and N release of organic fertilizers with respect to amount and timing is one key for successful cultivation of organic ornamentals. Thereby for plants with a low to moderate N demand growers can add the fertilizer as complete preplant application (CPA). For plants with a high N demand splitting fertilization in a reduced preplant application combined with an additional fertigation (RPA+F) is preferable. Aim of the current research was the investigation of N release of organic fertilizers in incubation experiments. Results of the incubation experiment were linked to a pot trial with pelargonium. Incubation experiments reveal that most fertilizers release about 40 to 50 % of total N and most nitrogen is released within the first 21 days. Only for sheep wool a delay of N release up to ten days was found. CPA using sheep wool and RPA+F (irrespective of fertilizer) give the best results. The delayed release pattern of sheep wool seems to match best N demand of plants

    Dried blood spot analysis for the quantification of vancomycin and creatinine using liquid chromatography – tandem mass spectrometry:Method development and validation

    Background: Vancomycin is a widely used antibiotic for the treatment of gram-positive bacterial infections, especially for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. Due to a small therapeutic range and large inter-patient variability, therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of vancomycin is required to minimize toxicity and maximize treatment efficacy. Venous blood sampling is mostly applied for TDM of vancomycin, although this widely used sampling method is more invasive compared to less painful alternatives, such as the dried blood spot (DBS) method, which can be performed at home. Method: We developed an UPLC-MS/MS method for the quantification of vancomycin and creatinine in DBS. A fast sample preparation and short analysis run time of 5.2 min were applied, which makes this method highly suitable for clinical settings. Validation was performed according to international (FDA and EMA) guidelines. Results: The validated concentration range was found linear for creatinine from 41.8 µmol/L to 722 µmol/L and for vancomycin from 3.8 mg/L to 76.6 mg/L (r2 &gt; 0.990) and the inaccuracies, imprecisions, hematocrit effects, and recoveries were &lt; 15 % for both compounds. No significant carryover effect was observed. Conclusion: Hence, we successfully validated a quantification method for the simultaneous determination of creatinine and vancomycin in DBS.</p

    Varicella vaccination coverage of children under two years of age in Germany

    Background: Since July 2004, routine varicella vaccination is recommended by the German Standing Vaccination Committee in Germany. Health Insurance Funds started to cover vaccination costs at different time points between 2004 and 2006 in the Federal States. Nationwide representative data on vaccination coverage against varicella of children under two years of age are not available. We aimed to determine varicella vaccination coverage in statutory health insured children under two years of age in twelve German Federal States using data from associations of statutory health insurance physicians (ASHIPs), in order to investigate the acceptance of the recommended routine varicella vaccination programme. Methods: We analysed data on varicella vaccination from 13 of 17 ASHIPs of the years 2004 to 2007. The study population consisted of all statutory health insured children under two years of age born in 2004 (cohort 2004) or 2005 (cohort 2005) in one of the studied regions. Vaccination coverage was determined by the number of children vaccinated under 2 years of age within the study population. Results: Varicella vaccination coverage of children under two years of age with either one dose of the monovalent varicella vaccine or two doses of the measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella vaccine increased from 34% (cohort 2004) to 51% (cohort 2005) in the studied regions (p < 0.001). More than half of the vaccinated children of cohort 2004 and two third of cohort 2005 were immunised at the recommended age 11 to 14 months. The level of vaccination coverage of cohort 2004 was significantly associated with the delay in introduction of cost coverage since the recommendation of varicella vaccination (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study shows increasing varicella vaccination coverage of young children, indicating a growing acceptance of the routine varicella vaccination programme by the parents and physicians. We recommend further monitoring of vaccination coverage using data from ASHIPs to investigate acceptance of the routine vaccination programmes over time

    Renormalization and Quantum Scaling of Frenkel-Kontorova Models

    We generalise the classical Transition by Breaking of Analyticity for the class of Frenkel-Kontorova models studied by Aubry and others to non-zero Planck's constant and temperature. This analysis is based on the study of a renormalization operator for the case of irrational mean spacing using Feynman's functional integral approach. We show how existing classical results extend to the quantum regime. In particular we extend MacKay's renormalization approach for the classical statistical mechanics to deduce scaling of low frequency effects and quantum effects. Our approach extends the phenomenon of hierarchical melting studied by Vallet, Schilling and Aubry to the quantum regime.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, submitted to J.Stat.Phy
