    Crystallization of the C-terminal domain of the mouse brain cytosolic long-chain acyl-CoA thioesterase

    The mammalian long-chain acyl-CoA thioesterase, the enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of acyl-CoAs to free fatty acids, contains two fused 4HBT (4-hydroxybenzoyl-CoA thioesterase) motifs. The C-terminal domain of the mouse long-chain acyl-CoA thioesterase (Acot7) has been expressed in bacteria and crystallized. The crystals were obtained by vapour diffusion using PEG 2000 MME as precipitant at pH 7.0 and 290 K. The crystals have the symmetry of space group R32 ( unit-cell parameters a = b = 136.83, c = 99.82 angstrom, gamma = 120 degrees). Two molecules are expected in the asymmetric unit. The crystals diffract to 2.4 angstrom resolution using the laboratory X-ray source and are suitable for crystal structure determination

    Frustration - how it can be measured

    A misfit parameter is used to characterize the degree of frustration of ordered and disordered systems. It measures the increase of the ground-state energy due to frustration in comparison with that of a relevant reference state. The misfit parameter is calculated for various spin-glass models. It allows one to compare these models with each other.     Seed removal in two coexisting oak species: ecological consequences of seed size, plant cover and seed-drop timing

Inter-specific differences arising at these early stages play a crucial role on tree recruitment patterns, which in turn could influence forest dynamics and species segregation in heterogeneous environments such as Mediterranean forests. We investigated removal rates from acorns set onto the ground in two coexisting Mediterranean oak species Quercus canariensis and Q. suber in southern Spain. We developed maximum likelihood estimators to investigate the main factors controlling probabilities of seed removal and to describe species-specific functional responses. To account for inter-specific differences in seed-drop timing, two experiments were established: a simultaneous exposure of acorns of the two species (synchronous experiments) and a seed exposure following their natural seed-drop phenology (diachronic experiments). A total of 1536 acorns were experimentally distributed along a wide and natural gradient of plant cover, and removal was periodically monitored for three months at two consecutive years (with contrasting differences in seed production and thus seed availability on the ground). The probability of seed removal increased with plant cover (leaf area index, LAI) for the two oak species. Inter-specific differences in acorn removal were higher in open areas and disappeared in closed microhabitats, especially during a non-mast year. Despite later seed-drop, Q. suber acorns were removed faster and at a higher proportion than those of Q. canariensis. The higher probability of seed removal for this species could be attributed to its larger seed size compared to Q. canariensis, as inter-specific differences were less pronounced when similar sized acorns were exposed. Inter-specific differences in seed removal, arising from seed size variability and microsite heterogeneity, could be of paramount importance in oak species niche separation, driving stand dynamics and composition along environmental gradients.This study was supported by FPU and FPI-MEC grants to IMPR and IRU, and by the Spanish MEC projects Heteromed (REN2002-4041- C02-02) and Dinamed (CGL2005-5830-C03-01).     Derivation of Boltzmann Principle

    We present a derivation of Boltzmann principle SB=kBlnWS_{B}=k_{B}\ln \mathcal{W} based on classical mechanical models of thermodynamics. The argument is based on the heat theorem and can be traced back to the second half of the nineteenth century with the works of Helmholtz and Boltzmann. Despite its simplicity, this argument has remained almost unknown. We present it in a modern, self-contained and accessible form. The approach constitutes an important link between classical mechanics and statistical mechanics

    Tree seedling shade tolerance arises from interactions with microbes and is mediated by functional traits

    Shade tolerance is a central concept in forest ecology and strongly influences forest community dynamics. However, the plant traits and conditions conferring shade tolerance are yet to be resolved. We propose that shade tolerance is shaped not only by responses to light but also by a species’ defense and recovery functional traits, soil microbial communities, and interactions of these factors with light availability. We conducted a greenhouse experiment for three temperate species in the genus Acer that vary in shade tolerance. We grew newly germinated seedlings in two light levels (2% and 30% sun) and controlled additions of microbial filtrates using a wet-sieving technique. Microbial filtrate treatments included: <20 µm, likely dominated by pathogenic microbes; 40-250 µm, containing arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF); combination, including both filtrate sizes; and sterilized combination. We monitored survival for nine weeks and measured fine root AMF colonization, hypocotyl phenolics, stem lignin, and stem+root nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) at three-week intervals. We found that differences in seedling survival between low and high light only occurred when microbes were present. AMF colonization, phenolics, and NSC generally increased with light. Phenolics were greater with <20 µm microbial filtrate, suggesting that soil-borne pathogens may induce phenolic production; and NSC was greater with 40-250 µm filtrate, suggesting that mycorrhizal fungi may induce NSC production. Across species, microbe treatments, and light availability, survival increased as phenolics and NSC increased. Therefore, shade tolerance may be explained by interactions among soil-borne microbes, seedling traits, and light availability, providing a more mechanistic and trait-based explanation of shade tolerance and thus forest community dynamics

    On the Quasiparticle Description of Lattice QCD Thermodynamics

    We propose a novel quasiparticle interpretation of the equation of state of deconfined QCD at finite temperature. Using appropriate thermal masses, we introduce a phenomenological parametrization of the onset of confinement in the vicinity of the predicted phase transition. Lattice results of the energy density, the pressure and the interaction measure of pure SU(3) gauge theory are excellently reproduced. We find a relationship between the thermal energy density of the Yang-Mills vacuum and the chromomagnetic condensate _T. Finally, an extension to QCD with dynamical quarks is discussed. Good agreement with lattice data for 2, 2+1 and 3 flavour QCD is obtained. We also present the QCD equation of state for realistic quark masses.Comment: 20 pages, 10 eps figure

    The Space Environments Testbed (SET) is a flight controller data system for the Common Carrier Assembly. The SET-1 flight software provides the command, telemetry, and experiment control to ground operators for the SET-1 mission. Modes of operation (see dia gram) include: a) Boot Mode that is initiated at application of power to the processor card, and runs memory diagnostics. It may be entered via ground command or autonomously based upon fault detection. b) Maintenance Mode that allows for limited carrier health monitoring, including power telemetry monitoring on a non-interference basis. c) Safe Mode is a predefined, minimum power safehold configuration with power to experiments removed and carrier functionality minimized. It is used to troubleshoot problems that occur during flight. d) Operations Mode is used for normal experiment carrier operations. It may be entered only via ground command from Safe Mode

    Time decay of the remanent magnetization in the ±J\pm J spin glass model at T=0

    Using the zero-temperature Metropolis dynamics, the time decay of the remanent magnetization in the ±J\pm J Edward-Anderson spin glass model with a uniform random distribution of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions has been investigated. Starting from the saturation, the magnetization per spin mm reveals a slow decrease with time, which can be approximated by a power law:m(t)=m+(ta0)a1m(t)=m_{\infty}+ ({t\over a_{0}})^{a_{1}}, a1<0a_{1} < 0. Moreover, its relaxation does not lead it into one of the ground states, and therefore the system is trapped in metastable isoenergetic microstates remaining magnetized. Such behaviour is discussed in terms of a random walk the system performs on its available configuration space.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    Shopping centre siting and modal choice in Belgium: a destination based analysis

    Although modal split is only one of the elements considered in decision-making on new shopping malls, it remarkably often arises in arguments of both proponents and opponents. Today, this is also the case in the debate on the planned development of three major shopping malls in Belgium. Inspired by such debates, the present study focuses on the impact of the location of shopping centres on the travel mode choice of the customers. Our hypothesis is that destination-based variables such as embeddedness in the urban fabric, accessibility and mall size influence the travel mode choice of the visitors. Based on modal split data and location characteristics of seventeen existing shopping centres in Belgium, we develop a model for a more sustainable siting policy. The results show a major influence of the location of the shopping centre in relation to the urban form, and of the size of the mall. Shopping centres that are part of a dense urban fabric, measured through population density, are less car dependent. Smaller sites will attract more cyclists and pedestrians. Interestingly, our results deviate significantly from the figures that have been put forward in public debates on the shopping mall issue in Belgium
