    Effects of Insecticides on Spiracle Movements in Insect

    We studied the effects of permethrin and DDVP on thoracic spiracle movements of the male cockroach. Permethrin increased, rather than decreased, the average open time of thoracic valve 1 in low or lethal doses, with no large change in the frequency of the opening and closing. In thoracic spiracle 2, the average open time was reduced by 1/3 of the control, but the opening frequency was markedly increased. DDVP had a similar effect on thoracic spiracle 1. The action of DDVP was only transiently and partially antagonized by atropine. These results suggest that the thoracic spiracle 1 valve tends to open, probably by a peripheral control mechanism, rather than to close, during permethrin or DDVP poisoning in insects

    On feasible and infeasible search for equitable graph coloring

    An equitable legal k-coloring of an undirected graph G = (V, E) is a partition of the vertex set V into k disjoint independent sets, such that the cardinalities of any two independent sets differ by at most one (this is called the equity constraint). As a variant of the popular graph coloring problem (GCP), the equitable coloring problem (ECP) involves finding a minimum k for which an equitable legal k-coloring exists. In this paper, we present a study of searching both feasible and infeasible solutions with respect to the equity constraint. The resulting algorithm relies on a mixed search strategy exploring both equitable and inequitable colorings unlike existing algorithms where the search is limited to equitable colorings only. We present experimental results on 73 DIMACS and COLOR benchmark graphs and demonstrate the competitiveness of this search strategy by showing 9 improved best-known results (new upper bounds)

    Controlling the topology of Fermi surfaces in metal nanofilms.

    The properties of metal crystals are governed by the electrons of the highest occupied states at the Fermi level and determined by Fermi surfaces, the Fermi energy contours in momentum space. Topological regulation of the Fermi surface has been an important issue in synthesizing functional materials, which we found to be realized at room temperature in nanometer-thick films. Reducing the thickness of a metal thin film down to its electron wavelength scale induces the quantum size effect and the electronic system changes from three to two-dimensional, transforming the Fermi surface topology. Such an ultrathin film further changes its topology through one-dimensional (1D) structural deformation of the film when it is grown on a 1D substrate. In particular, when the interface has 1D metallic bands, the system is additionally stabilized by forming an electron energy gap by hybridization between 1D states of the film and substrate

    Dynamic Trend of Myocardial Edema in Takotsubo Syndrome: A Serial Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Study

    BACKGROUND The wall motion abnormalities of the left ventricle (LV) in takotsubo syndrome (TTS) are known to be transient and completely recover within a few weeks. However, there is little information about the relationship between functional recovery and tissue characteristics. The aim of this study was to investigate the recovery process of TTS using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). METHODS Consecutive patients with TTS were prospectively enrolled. We performed serial CMR in the acute phase (<72 h after admission), the subacute phase (7-10 days after admission) and the chronic phase (3 months later). To assess the degree of myocardial edema quantitatively, we evaluated the signal intensity of myocardium on T2-weighted images and calculated the signal intensity ratio compared with the skeletal muscle. RESULTS Fifteen patients with TTS were enrolled. CMR demonstrated reduced LV ejection fraction in the acute phase, and it recovered almost completely by the subacute phase. On the other hand, severe myocardial edema was still observed in the subacute phase, associated with increased LV mass. The highest signal intensity ratio in the subacute phase was correlated with the maximum voltage of negative T wave on electrocardiogram (r = 0.57, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS In patients with TTS, myocardial edema associated with increased LV mass still remained in the subacute phase despite functional recovery of the LV. Electrocardiogram may be useful to assess the degree of myocardial edema in the subacute phase. Our study suggests that myocardial ischemia might have a central role in developing TTS

    Gravity equations explaining foreign affiliates’ sales are ad hoc and hence, estimated coefficients are hard to interpret. We therefore provide the theoretical underpinnings of the gravity equation applied to the analysis of sales of foreign affiliates of multinational firms. We argue that the success of the gravity equation results from the fact that it can be derived from various theoretical models. We illustrate this point by deriving a gravity equation from three different models of multinational firms. Using data on real affiliate sales, we show how this derived gravity equation can nevertheless be used to discriminate between the different theoretical models

    Pre-M Phase-promoting Factor Associates with Annulate Lamellae in Xenopus Oocytes and Egg Extracts

    We have used complementary biochemical and in vivo approaches to study the compartmentalization of M phase-promoting factor (MPF) in prophase Xenopus eggs and oocytes. We first examined the distribution of MPF (Cdc2/CyclinB2) and membranous organelles in high-speed extracts of Xenopus eggs made during mitotic prophase. These extracts were found to lack mitochondria, Golgi membranes, and most endoplasmic reticulum (ER) but to contain the bulk of the pre-MPF pool. This pre-MPF could be pelleted by further centrifugation along with components necessary to activate it. On activation, Cdc2/CyclinB2 moved into the soluble fraction. Electron microscopy and Western blot analysis showed that the pre-MPF pellet contained a specific ER subdomain comprising "annulate lamellae" (AL): stacked ER membranes highly enriched in nuclear pores. Colocalization of pre-MPF with AL was demonstrated by anti-CyclinB2 immunofluorescence in prophase oocytes, in which AL are positioned close to the vegetal surface. Green fluorescent protein-CyclinB2 expressed in oocytes also localized at AL. These data suggest that inactive MPF associates with nuclear envelope components just before activation. This association may explain why nuclei and centrosomes stimulate MPF activation and provide a mechanism for targeting of MPF to some of its key substrates
