    John Donne\u27s sacred aesthetics and protestant eschatology in La Corona

    The operative figure for describing John Donne\u27s religious poem, La Corona, is not a circle, as it has often been characterized, but a spiral. This figure incorporates the linear narrative and climax of the poem while maintaining the circularity of on-going spiritual experience. Scholars such as Patrick O\u27Connell and Elizabeth Hodgson are correct in viewing the poem as Donne\u27s ars poetica sacra - his apologetic for the religious poet. But such scholars see either a climax and resolution for the speaker of La Corona or an unresolved question of his place as a poet. This paper argues that while the speaker of the poem does reach a spiritual crisis and learns a lesson of faith, that lesson is not finished in the eschatological sense. The linked sonnets of the poem take the reader back to the beginning of the poem with a new understanding and ability to continue the catechism

    Probing the interiors of the ice giants: Shock compression of water to 700 GPa and 3.8 g/ccm

    Recently there has been tremendous increase in the number of identified extra-solar planetary systems. Our understanding of their formation is tied to exoplanet internal structure models, which rely upon equations of state of light elements and compounds like water. Here we present shock compression data for water with unprecedented accuracy that shows water equations of state commonly used in planetary modeling significantly overestimate the compressibility at conditions relevant to planetary interiors. Furthermore, we show its behavior at these conditions, including reflectivity and isentropic response, is well described by a recent first-principles based equation of state. These findings advocate this water model be used as the standard for modeling Neptune, Uranus, and "hot Neptune" exoplanets, and should improve our understanding of these types of planets.Comment: Accepted to Phys.     QUALITATIVE BIOMECHANICS FOR COACHING

    Session Information: Coaches must apply principles of biomechanics in their qualitative judgments of the technique used by athletes. These judgments can have a major influence on performance and injury risk. This session will focus on the most effective use of qualitative biomechanical analyses and video replay software. Several scholars who have experience teaching qualitative biomechanical analysis to future coaches will present, followed by a question and answer session. Schedule of Presentations: Dr. Knudson will introduce the session and provide a brief overview of qualitative biomechanical analysis. 11:00 – 11:15 Dr. Alderson will present sport injury models as they apply to assessment, intervention and rehabilitation of common injuries in cricket, tennis and running. Relevant qualitative and quantitative 2D features of SiliconCoach that can be utilised by a coach to potentially reduce injury incidence will be presented. 11:15 – 11:45 Dr. Bahamonde will present how qualitative analysis can be used to teach biomechanics concepts to physical education and coaching students. Movement examples from tennis, soccer and track field and meaningful features of Hu-m-an software will be illustrated. Hu-m-an is unique in that it was developed with a specific teaching-learning focus. 11:45 – 12:15 Dr. Bird will present biomechanical core concepts as a “common language” to evaluate and improve all human movements. The core concepts are visually observable, but meaningful features of Dartfish will be illustrated to enhance what is seen by both the coach and the mover. Movement examples from golf, resistance training, basketball, and other sports will be presented. 12:15 – 12:45 Discussion: 12:45 – 13:00 This will provide an opportunity for delegates to ask specific questions relating to any of the presenters

    This series of papers is concerned with the derivation of the equations of the classical picture of atomic collisions, iâ„Źddtdi(t)=ÎŁjhij(t)dj(t), which describe the time dependence of electronic-quantum-state amplitudes as the nuclei move along a classical trajectory. These equations are derived in two ways. In the first formulation, which coincides with the intuitive classical picture of the collision, the nuclear part of the wave function is treated as a superposition of narrow wave packets, each traveling along a classical trajectory. In the second formulation, a semiclassical approach is used. The validity and meaning of the two formulations are discussed and compared

    FOURTH NORTH AMERICAN SURVEY OF UNDERGRADUATE BIOMECHANICS INSTRUCTION IN KINESIOLOGY/EXERCISE SCIENCE

    A web-based survey of introductory biomechanics instructors in Kinesiology/Exercise Science departments from North America was conducted to document current instructor and course characteristics. Responses from 165 faculty from the USA and Canada were compiled and compared to previous surveys. Survey respondents tended to have doctoral training in biomechanics and reported nominally larger percentages, relative to previous surveys, of courses entitled “biomechanics” and mechanical content. The respondents also reported greater diversity of course prerequisites, less emphasis on anatomy, and less familiarity with NASPE guidelines for the course than reported in previous surveys

    Role of accounting practices in the disempowerment of the Coahuiltecan Indians

    This paper argues that a complex of accounting measures : account books, inventories of accumulated wealth, and detailed instructions for production performance : were used to inculcate Western values into the native population located at five Franciscan missions along the San Antonio River in New Spain (present-day Texas) from 1718 to 1794. Bolstered by the need to alleviate communications problems caused by extreme isolation, the missionaries constructed detailed mission documents that described the acquisition of scarce resources, reported the aggregation of material and spiritual mission wealth, and controlled daily production performance of the native population. In short, the resulting mission economic system, which held the Indians to certain notions of accountability, primarily by restricting their choices, nourished the Western view of income distribution based on effort. We propose that these procedures ultimately caused the Coahuiltecans to abandon their native beliefs, and gradually, to be absorbed into Spanish society. The 150 Coahuiltecan tribes ceased to exist as a distinct culture by the early 19th century. The exploitation and ultimate subjugation of the Coahuiltecan Indians parallels strikingly subsequent developments in Canada, Australia, and the Scottish Highlands

    A review of tennis racket performance parameters

    The application of advanced engineering to tennis racket design has influenced the nature of the sport. As a result, the International Tennis Federation has established rules to limit performance, with the aim of protecting the nature of the game. This paper illustrates how changes to the racket affect the player-racket system. The review integrates engineering and biomechanical issues related to tennis racket performance, covering the biomechanical characteristics of tennis strokes, tennis racket performance, the effect of racket parameters on ball rebound and biomechanical interactions. Racket properties influence the rebound of the ball. Ball rebound speed increases with frame stiffness and as string tension decreases. Reducing inter-string contacting forces increases rebound topspin. Historical trends and predictive modelling indicate swingweights of around 0.030–0.035 kg/m2 are best for high ball speed and accuracy. To fully understand the effect of their design changes, engineers should use impact conditions in their experiments, or models, which reflect those of actual tennis strokes. Sports engineers, therefore, benefit from working closely with biomechanists to ensure realistic impact conditions
