The hot and cold interstellar matter of early type galaxies and their radio emission
Over the last few years, the knowledge of the interstellar matter (ISM) of early type galaxies has increased dramatically. Many early type galaxies are now known to have ISM in three different phases: cold (neutral hydrogen (HI), dust and molecular material), warm (ionized) and hot (S-ray emitting) gas. Early type galaxies have smaller masses of cold ISM (10 to the 7th power - 10 to the 8th power solar mass; Jura et al. 1987) than later type spiral galaxies, while they have far more hot gas (10 to the 9th power - 10 to the tenth power solar mass; Forman et al. 1985, Canizares et al. 1987). On Semiclassical Limits of String States
We explore the relation between classical and quantum states in both open and
closed (super)strings discussing the relevance of coherent states as a
semiclassical approximation. For the closed string sector a gauge-fixing of the
residual world-sheet rigid translation symmetry of the light-cone gauge is
needed for the construction to be possible. The circular target-space loop

Molecular gas in nearby powerful radio galaxies
We report the detection of CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission from the central
region of nearby 3CR radio galaxies (z 0.03). Out of 21 galaxies, 8 have
been detected in, at least, one of the two CO transitions. The total molecular
gas content is below 10 \msun. Their individual CO emission exhibit, for 5
cases, a double-horned line profile that is characteristic of an inclined
rotating disk with a central depression at the rising part of its rotation
curve. The inferred disk or ring distributions of the molecular gas is
consistent with the observed presence of dust disks or rings detected optically
in the cores of the galaxies. We reason that if their gas originates from the
mergers of two gas-rich disk galaxies, as has been invoked to explain the
molecular gas in other radio galaxies, then these galaxies must have merged a
long time ago (few Gyr or more) but their remnant elliptical galaxies only
recently (last 10 years or less) become active radio galaxies. Instead, we
argue the the cannibalism of gas-rich galaxies provide a simpler explanation
for the origin of molecular gas in the elliptical hosts of radio galaxies (Lim
et al. 2000). Given the transient nature of their observed disturbances, these
galaxies probably become active in radio soon after the accretion event when

Cost-effectiveness of financial incentives to promote adherence to depot antipsychotic medication: economic evaluation of a cluster-randomised controlled trial
Background: Offering a modest financial incentive to people with psychosis can promote adherence to depot antipsychotic medication, but the cost-effectiveness of this approach has not been examined. Methods: Economic evaluation within a pragmatic cluster-randomised controlled trial. 141 patients under the care of 73 teams (clusters) were randomised to intervention or control; 138 patients with diagnoses of schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder or bipolar disorder participated. Intervention participants received ÂŁ15 per depot injection over 12 months, additional to usual acute, mental and community primary health services. The control group received usual health services. Main outcome measures: incremental cost per 20% increase in adherence to depot antipsychotic medication; incremental cost of âgoodâ adherence (defined as taking at least 95% of the prescribed number of depot medications over the intervention period). Findings: Economic and outcome data for baseline and 12-month follow-up were available for 117 participants. The adjusted difference in adherence between groups was 12.2% (73.4% control vs. 85.6% intervention); the adjusted costs difference was ÂŁ598 (95% CI -ÂŁ4 533, ÂŁ5 730). The extra cost per patient to increase adherence to depot medications by 20% was ÂŁ982 (95% CI -ÂŁ8 020, ÂŁ14 000). The extra cost per patient of achieving 'good' adherence was ÂŁ2 950 (CI -ÂŁ19 400, ÂŁ27 800). Probability of cost-effectiveness exceeded 97.5%at willingness-to-pay values of ÂŁ14 000 for a 20% increase in adherence and ÂŁ27 800 for good adherence. Interpretation: Offering a modest financial incentive to people with psychosis is cost-effective in promoting adherence to depot antipsychotic medication. Direct healthcare costs (including costs of the financial incentive) are unlikely to be increased by this intervention. Trial Registration: ISRCTN.com 7776928
Parameter Estimation and Quantitative Parametric Linkage Analysis with GENEHUNTER-QMOD
Objective: We present a parametric method for linkage analysis of quantitative phenotypes. The method provides a test for linkage as well as an estimate of different phenotype parameters. We have implemented our new method in the program GENEHUNTER-QMOD and evaluated its properties by performing simulations. Methods: The phenotype is modeled as a normally distributed variable, with a separate distribution for each genotype. Parameter estimates are obtained by maximizing the LOD score over the normal distribution parameters with a gradient-based optimization called PGRAD method. Results: The PGRAD method has lower power to detect linkage than the variance components analysis (VCA) in case of a normal distribution and small pedigrees. However, it outperforms the VCA and Haseman-Elston regression for extended pedigrees, nonrandomly ascertained data and non-normally distributed phenotypes. Here, the higher power even goes along with conservativeness, while the VCA has an inflated type I error. Parameter estimation tends to underestimate residual variances but performs better for expectation values of the phenotype distributions. Conclusion: With GENEHUNTER-QMOD, a powerful new tool is provided to explicitly model quantitative phenotypes in the context of linkage analysis. Extragalactic Results from the Infrared Space Observatory
More than a decade ago the IRAS satellite opened the realm of external
galaxies for studies in the 10 to 100 micron band and discovered emission from
tens of thousands of normal and active galaxies. With the 1995-1998 mission of
the Infrared Space Observatory the next major steps in extragalactic infrared
astronomy became possible: detailed imaging, spectroscopy and
spectro-photometry of many galaxies detected by IRAS, as well as deep surveys
in the mid- and far- IR. The spectroscopic data reveal a wealth of detail about
the nature of the energy source(s) and about the physical conditions in
galaxies. ISO's surveys for the first time explore the infrared emission of
distant, high-redshift galaxies. ISO's main theme in extragalactic astronomy is

Effects of climate and snow depth on Bromus tectorum population dynamics at high elevation
Invasive plants are thought to be especially capable of range shifts or expansion in response to climate change due to high dispersal and colonization abilities. Although highly invasive throughout the Intermountain West, the presence and impact of the grass Bromus tectorum has been limited at higher elevations in the eastern Sierra Nevada, potentially due to extreme wintertime conditions. However, climate models project an upward elevational shift of climate regimes in the Sierra Nevada that could favor B. tectorum expansion. This research specifically examined the effects of experimental snow depth manipulations and interannual climate variability over 5 years on B. tectorum populations at high elevation (2,175Â m). Experimentally-increased snow depth had an effect on phenology and biomass, but no effect on individual fecundity. Instead an experimentally-increased snowpack inhibited population growth in 1 year by reducing seedling emergence and early survival. A similar negative effect of increased snow was observed 2 years later. However, a strong negative effect on B. tectorum was also associated with a naturally low-snow winter, when seedling emergence was reduced by 86%. Across 5 years, winters with greater snow cover and a slower accumulation of degree-days coincided with higher B. tectorum seedling density and population growth. Thus, we observed negative effects associated with both experimentally-increased and naturally-decreased snowpacks. It is likely that the effect of snow at high elevation is nonlinear and differs from lower elevations where wintertime germination can be favorable. An association study on contrasting cystic fibrosis endophenotypes recognizes KRT8 but not KRT18 as a modifier of cystic fibrosis disease severity and CFTR mediated residual chloride secretion
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>F508del-CFTR, the most frequent disease-causing mutation among Caucasian cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, has been characterised as a mutant defective in protein folding, processing and trafficking. We have investigated the two neighbouring cytokeratin genes <it>KRT8 </it>and <it>KRT18 </it>in a candidate gene approach to ask whether variants in <it>KRT8 </it>and/or <it>KRT18 </it>modify the impaired ion conductance known as the CF basic defect, and whether they are associated with correct trafficking of mutant CFTR and disease severity of CF.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We have selected contrasting F508del-<it>CFTR </it>homozygous patient subpopulations stratified for disease severity, comparing 13 concordant mildly affected sib pairs vs. 12 concordant severely affected sib pairs, or manifestation of the CF basic defect in intestinal epithelium, comparing 22 individuals who exhibit CFTR-mediated residual chloride secretion vs. 14 individuals who do not express any chloride secretion, for an association. The <it>KRT8</it>/<it>KRT18 </it>locus was initially interrogated with one informative microsatellite marker. Subsequently, a low density SNP map with four SNPs in KRT8 and two SNPs in KRT18, each selected for high polymorphism content, was used to localize the association signal.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>KRT8</it>, but not <it>KRT18</it>, showed an association with CF disease severity (P<sub>best </sub>= 0.00131; P<sub>corr </sub>= 0.0185) and CFTR mediated residual chloride secretion (P<sub>best </sub>= 0.0004; P<sub>corr </sub>= 0.0069). Two major four-marker-haplotypes spanning 13 kb including the entire <it>KRT8 </it>gene accounted for 90% of chromosomes, demonstrating strong linkage disequilibrium at that locus. Absence of chloride secretion was associated with the recessive haplotype 1122 at rs1907671, rs4300473, rs2035878 and rs2035875. The contrasting haplotype 2211 was dominant for the presence of CFTR mediated residual chloride secretion. In consistency, the <it>KRT8 </it>haplotype 2211 was associated with mild CF disease while 1122 was observed as risk haplotype. Analysis of microsatellite allele distributions on the SNP background suggests that the mild <it>KRT8 </it>haplotype 2211 is phylogenetically older than its severe counterpart.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The two opposing <it>KRT8 </it>alleles which have been identified as a benign and as a risk allele in this work are likely effective in the context of epithelial cell differentiation. As the mild <it>KRT8 </it>allele is associated with CFTR mediated residual chloride secretion among F508del-<it>CFTR </it>homozygotes, the KRT8/KRT18 heterodimeric intermediary filaments of the cytoskeleton apparently are an essential component for the proper targeting of CFTR to the apical membrane in epithelial cells.</p
