Annular synthetic jet used for impinging flow mass-transfer
An annular synthetic jet was investigated experimentally, both with and without an
opposing impingement wall. The experiments involved smoke visualization and mass
transfer measurement on the wall by means of naphthalene sublimation technique.
Two qualitatively different flow field patterns were identified, depending upon the
driving amplitude level. With small amplitudes, vortical puffs maintain their identity
for a relatively long time. If the amplitudes are large, breakdown and coalescence of
the vortical train is much faster. Also the resultant mass transfer to the impingement
wall is then much higher. Furthermore, a fundamental change of the whole flow field
was observed at the high end of the investigated frequency range, associated with
radical reduction of the size of the recirculation bubble
A Review on the Use of Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy in the Bile Duct
Background. Current methods to diagnose malignant biliary strictures are of low sensitivity. Probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (pCLE) is a new approach that can be used to evaluate in vivo histopathology of the GI tract. This paper is of studies evidencing pCLE's application in the diagnosis of indeterminate biliary strictures. Methods. This paper examined peer-reviewed studies conducted between January 2000 and November 2011. A PubMed search for relevant articles was performed using the following keywords:âpCLEâ, âconfocalâ, âendomicroscopyâ, âprobe-based confocal laser endomicroscopyâ, âand âbile ductâ. Further individual review was done to assess the screened articles' relevance to the topic. Results. After individual review, 6 studies were included; with a cumulative sample size of 165, with 75 subjects identified as having a malignancy. These studies included tertiary care centers in Germany, France, and USA, including one multicenter trial. 3 studies assessed pCLE's specificity (range 67%â88%) ,sensitivity (range 83%â98), and accuracy (range 81%â86%). Conclusion. Confocal endomicroscopy is a novel and promising modality for the biliary tree. Further studies need to be conducted both to establish its usefulness for the diagnosis of indeterminate biliary strictures and to understand the histological meaning of the imaging patterns that are observed
Measuring attitude towards Buddhism and Sikhism : internal consistency reliability for two new instruments
This paper describes and discusses the development and empirical properties of two new
24-item scales â one measuring attitude toward Buddhism and the other measuring attitude
toward Sikhism. The scale is designed to facilitate inter-faith comparisons within the
psychology of religion alongside the well-established Francis Scale of Attitude toward
Christianity. Data were obtained from a multi-religious sample of 369 school pupils aged
between 13 and 15 in London. Application of the two scales demonstrated that adolescents
had a more positive attitude to Buddhism than Sikhism. The findings confirm the reliability
of the scales and commend them for further use
Structureâfunction relations in diF-TES-ADT blend organic field effect transistors studied by scanning probe microscopy
We develop structureâproperty relations for organic field effect transistors using a polymer/small-molecule blend active layer. An array of bottom gate, bottom contact devices using a polymeric dielectric and a semiconductor layer of 2,8-difluoro-5,11-bis(triethylsilylethynyl)anthradithiophene (diF-TES-ADT) is described and shown to have good device-to-device uniformity. We describe the nucleation and growth processes that lead to the formation of four structurally distinct regimes of the diF-TES-ADT semiconductor film, including evidence of layer-by-layer growth when spin-coated onto silver electrodes and an organic dielectric as part of a polymer blend. Devices exhibiting a maximum saturation mobility of 1.5 cm2 Vâ1 sâ1 and maximum current modulation ratio (Ion/Ioff) of 1.20 Ă 105 are visualised by atomic force microscopy and appear to have excellent domain connectivity and aligned crystallography across the channel. In contrast, poorly performing devices tend to show a phase change in semiconductor crystallinity in the channel centre. These observations are enhanced by direct visualisation of the potential drop across the channel using Kelvin probe microscopy, which confirms the importance of large, well-aligned and well-connected semiconductor domains across the transistor channel
Have Anglo-Catholics lost their vision for mission agencies? : an empirical enquiry among newly ordained clergy in Britain
Attitude toward Christian mission agencies was investigated in a sample of 827 Anglican clergy ordained in the UK from 2002 to 2006. The Scale of Attitude Toward Mission Agencies (SATMA) consisted of six items related to the work that agencies do, and whether clergy wished to engage with this work. It had a high internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.80). After controlling for theological liberalism or conservatism, attitudes were most positive among evangelicals and least positive among Anglo-Catholics. Both liberal and conservative Anglo-Catholic clergy showed less positive attitudes toward mission agencies than did other clergy
Church tradition and psychological type preferences among Anglicans in England
A sample of 290 individuals attending Evangelical Anglican churches and Anglo-Catholic churches in central England completed the Keirsey Temperament Sorter, a measure of psychological type preferences. Overall, there were clear preferences for sensing over intuition, for feeling over thinking, and for judging over perceiving, which is consistent with the findings of two earlier studies profiling the psychological type of Anglican churchgoers. However, there was also a significantly higher proportion of intuitives among Anglo-Catholics than among Evangelical Anglicans, which is consistent with the greater emphasis in Anglo-Catholic churches on mystery, awe, and the centrality of sacraments in worship which may resonate with the intuitive predisposition. The implications of these findings are discussed for the benefits of breadth and diversity within Anglicanism
Incorporating bioenergy into sustainable landscape designs
AbstractThe paper describes an approach to landscape design that focuses on integrating bioenergy production with other components of environmental, social and economic systems. Landscape design as used here refers to a spatially explicit, collaborative plan for management of landscapes and supply chains. Landscape design can involve multiple scales and build on existing practices to reduce costs or enhance services. Appropriately applied to a specific context, landscape design can help people assess trade-offs when making choices about locations, types of feedstock, transport, refining and distribution of bioenergy products and services. The approach includes performance monitoring and reporting along the bioenergy supply chain. Examples of landscape design applied to bioenergy production systems are presented. Barriers to implementation of landscape design include high costs, the need to consider diverse land-management objectives from a wide array of stakeholders, up-front planning requirements, and the complexity and level of effort needed for successful stakeholder involvement. A landscape design process may be stymied by insufficient data or participation. An impetus for coordination is critical, and incentives may be required to engage landowners and the private sector. Hence devising and implementing landscape designs for more sustainable outcomes require clear communication of environmental, social, and economic opportunities and concerns
