    Summertime partitioning and budget of NOycompounds in the troposphere over Alaska and Canada: ABLE 3B

    As part of NASA's Arctic Boundary Layer Expedition 3A and 3B field measurement programs, measurements of NO(x) HNO31, PAN, PPN, and NOy were made in the middle to lower troposphere over Alaska and Canada during the summers of 1988 and 1990. These measurements are used to assess the degree of closure within the reactive odd nitrogen (NxOy) budget through the comparison of the values of NOy measured with a catalytic convertor to the sum of individually measured NOy(i) compounds (i.e., Sigma NOy(i) = NOx + HNO3 + PAN + PPN). Significant differences were observed between the various study regions. In the lower 6 km of the troposphere over Alaska and the Hudson Bay lowlands of Canada a significant traction of the NOy budget (30 to 60 per cent) could not be accounted for by the measured Sigma NOy(i). This deficit in the NOy budget is about 100 to 200 parts per trillion by volume (pptv) in the lower troposphere (0.15 to 3 km) and about 200 to 400 pptv in the middle free troposphere (3 to 6.2 km). Conversely, the NOy budget in the northern Labrador and Quebec regions or Canada is almost totally accounted for within the combined measurement uncertainties of NOy and the various NOy(i) compounds. A substantial portion of the NOx budget's 'missing compounds' appears to be coupled to the photochemical and/or dynamical parameters influencing the tropospheric oxidative potential over these regions. A combination of factors are suggested as the causes for the variability observed in the NOy budget. In addition, the apparent stability of compounds represented by the NOy budget deficit in the lower-attitude range questions the ability of these compounds to participate as reversible reservoirs for "active" odd nitrogen and suggest that some portion of the NOy budget may consist of relatively unreactive nitrogencontaining compounds.     Heisenberg Dimer Single Molecule Magnets in a Strong Magnetic Field

    We calculate the static and dynamic properties of single crystal, single molecule magnets consisting of equal spin S=1/2S=1/2 or 5/2 dimers. The spins in each dimer interact with each other via the Heisenberg exchange interaction and with the magnetic induction B{\bf B} via the Zeeman interaction, and interdimer interactions are negligible. For antiferromagnetic couplings, the static magnetization and specific heat exhibit interesting low temperature TT and strong B{\bf B} quantum effects. We calculate the frequency spectrum of the Fourier transform of the real part of the time autocorrelation function C11(t){\cal C}_{11}(t) for arbitrary T,BT, {\bf B}, and compare our results with those obtained for classical spins. We also calculate the inelastic neutron magnetic dynamical structure factor S(q,ω)S({\bf q},\omega) at arbitrary T,BT, {\bf B}.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Pathological regional blood flow in opiate-dependent patients during withdrawal: A HMPAO-SPECT study

    The aims of the present study were to investigate regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in heroin-dependent patients during withdrawal and to assess the relation between these changes and duration of heroin consumption and withdrawal data. The rCBF was measured using brain SPECT with Tc-99m-HMPAO in 16 heroin-dependent patients during heroin withdrawal. Thirteen patients received levomethadone at the time of the SPECT scans. The images were analyzed both visually and quantitatively, a total of 21 hypoperfused brain regions were observed in 11 of the 16 patients. The temporal lobes were the most affected area, hypoperfusions of the right and left temporal lobe were observed in 5 and 5 patients, respectively. Three of the patients had a hypoperfusion of the right frontal lobe, 2 patients showed perfusion defects in the left frontal lobe, right parietal lobe and left parietal lobe. The results of the quantitative assessments of the rCBF were consistent with the results of the qualitative findings. The stepwise regression analysis showed a significant positive correlation (r = 0.54) between the dose of levomethadone at the time of the SPECT scan and the rCBF of the right parietal lobe. Other significant correlations between clinical data and rCBF were not found. The present results suggest brain perfusion abnormalities during heroin withdrawal in heroin-dependent patients, which are not due to the conditions of withdrawal

    Gaussian Tunneling Model of c-Axis Twist Josephson Junctions

    We calculate the critical current density JcJJ^J_c for c-axis Josephson tunneling between identical high temperature superconductors twisted an angle ϕ0\phi_0 about the c-axis. We model the tunneling matrix element squared as a Gaussian in the change of wavevector q parallel to the junction, <t(q)2>exp(q2a2/2π2σ2)<|t({\bf q})|^2>\propto\exp(-{\bf q}^2a^2/2\pi^2\sigma^2). The JcJ(ϕ0)/JcJ(0)J^J_c(\phi_0)/J^J_c(0) obtained for the s- and extended-s-wave order parameters (OP's) are consistent with the Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta} data of Li {\it et al.}, but only for strongly incoherent tunneling, σ20.25\sigma^2\ge0.25. A dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2}-wave OP is always inconsistent with the data. In addition, we show that the apparent conventional sum rule violation observed by Basov et al. might be understandable in terms of incoherent c-axis tunneling, provided that the OP is not dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2}-wave.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Gravitational corrections in supersymmetric gauge theory and matrix models

    Gravitational corrections in N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories are obtained from topological string amplitudes. We show how they are recovered in matrix model computations. This provides a test of the proposal by Dijkgraaf and Vafa beyond the planar limit. Both, matrix model and topological string theory, are used to check a conjecture of Nekrasov concerning these gravitational couplings in Seiberg-Witten theory. Our analysis is performed for those gauge theories which are related to the cubic matrix model, i.e. pure SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theory and N=2 U(N) SYM broken to N=1 via a cubic superpotential. We outline the computation of the topological amplitudes for the local Calabi-Yau manifolds which are relevant for these two cases.Comment: 27 pages, one eps figur

    Photoelectrochemical Conditioning of MOVPE p-InP Films for Light-Induced Hydrogen Evolution: Chemical, Electronic and Optical Properties

    Homoepitaxial p-InP(100) thin films prepared by MOVPE (metallorganic vapor phase epitaxy) were transformed into an InP/oxide-phosphate/Rh heterostructure by photoelectrochemical conditioning. Surface sensitive synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy indicates the formation of a mixed oxide constituted by In(PO_3)_3, InPO_4 and In_(2)O_3 as nominal components during photo-electrochemical activation. The operation of these films as hydrogen evolving photocathode proved a light-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency of 14.5%. Surface activation arises from a shift of the semiconductor electron affinity by 0.44 eV by formation of In-Cl interfacial dipoles with a density of about 10^(12) cm^(−2). Predominant local In2O3-like structures in the oxide introduce resonance states near the semiconductor conduction band edge imparting electron conductivity to the phosphate matrix. Surface reflectance investigations indicate an enhanced light-coupling in the layered architecture

    Pairbreaking Without Magnetic Impurities in Disordered Superconductors

    We study analytically the effects of inhomogeneous pairing interactions in short coherence length superconductors, using a spatially varying Bogoliubov-deGennes model. Within the Born approximation, it reproduces all of the standard Abrikosov-Gor'kov pairbreaking and gaplessness effects, even in the absence of actual magnetic impurities. For pairing disorder on a single site, the T-matrix gives rise to bound states within the BCS gap. Our results are compared with recent scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta} with Zn or Ni impurities.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PR
