Colourful Poincaré symmetry, gravity and particle actions
We construct a generalisation of the three-dimensional Poincar\'e algebra that also includes a colour symmetry factor. This algebra can be used to define coloured Poincar\'e gravity in three space-time dimensions as well as to study generalisations of massive and massless free particle models. We present various such generalised particle models that differ in which orbits of the coloured Poincar\'e symmetry are described. Our approach can be seen as a stepping stone towards the description of particles interacting with a non-abelian background field or as a starting point for a worldline formulation of an associated quantum field theory
Pure type I supergravity and DE(10)
We establish a dynamical equivalence between the bosonic part of pure type I
supergravity in D=10 and a D=1 non-linear sigma-model on the Kac-Moody coset
space DE(10)/K(DE(10)) if both theories are suitably truncated. To this end we
make use of a decomposition of DE(10) under its regular SO(9,9) subgroup. Our
analysis also deals partly with the fermionic fields of the supergravity theory
and we define corresponding representations of the generalized spatial Lorentz
group K(DE(10)).Comment: 28 page
An E9 multiplet of BPS states
We construct an infinite E9 multiplet of BPS states for 11D supergravity. For
each positive real root of E9 we obtain a BPS solution of 11D supergravity, or
of its exotic counterparts, depending on two non-compact transverse space
variables. All these solutions are related by U-dualities realised via E9 Weyl
transformations in the regular embedding of E9 in E10, E10 in E11. In this way
we recover the basic BPS solutions, namely the KK-wave, the M2 brane, the M5
brane and the KK6-monopole, as well as other solutions admitting eight
longitudinal space dimensions. A novel technique of combining Weyl reflexions
with compensating transformations allows the construction of many new BPS
solutions, each of which can be mapped to a solution of a dual effective action
of gravity coupled to a certain higher rank tensor field. For real roots of E10
which are not roots of E9, we obtain additional BPS solutions transcending 11D
supergravity (as exemplified by the lowest level solution corresponding to the
M9 brane). The relation between the dual formulation and the one in terms of
the original 11D supergravity fields has significance beyond the realm of BPS
solutions. We establish the link with the Geroch group of general relativity,
and explain how the E9 duality transformations generalize the standard Hodge
dualities to an infinite set of `non-closing dualities'.Comment: 76 pages, 6 figure
Arguments for F-theory
After a brief review of string and -Theory we point out some deficiencies.
Partly to cure them, we present several arguments for ``-Theory'', enlarging
spacetime to signature, following the original suggestion of C. Vafa.
We introduce a suggestive Supersymmetric 27-plet of particles, associated to
the exceptional symmetric hermitian space . Several
possible future directions, including using projective rather than metric
geometry, are mentioned. We should emphasize that -Theory is yet just a very
provisional attempt, lacking clear dynamical principles.Comment: To appear in early 2006 in Mod. Phys. Lett. A as Brief Revie
Counting supersymmetric branes
Maximal supergravity solutions are revisited and classified, with particular
emphasis on objects of co-dimension at most two. This class of solutions
includes branes whose tension scales with g_s^{-\sigma} for \sigma>2. We
present a group theory derivation of the counting of these objects based on the
corresponding tensor hierarchies derived from E11 and discrete T- and U-duality
transformations. This provides a rationale for the wrapping rules that were
recently discussed for \sigma<4 in the literature and extends them. Explicit
supergravity solutions that give rise to co-dimension two branes are
constructed and analysed.Comment: 1+33 pages. To the memory of Laurent Houart. v2: Published version

Ehlers symmetry at the next derivative order
We analyse four-dimensional gravity in the presence of general curvature
squared corrections and show that Ehlers' SL(2,R) symmetry, which appears in
the reduction of standard gravity to three dimensions, is preserved by the
correction terms. The mechanism allowing this is a correction of the SL(2,R)
transformation laws which resolves problems with the different scaling
behaviour of various terms occurring in the reduction.Comment: 13 pages. v2: updated referenc
Eisenstein series for infinite-dimensional U-duality groups
We consider Eisenstein series appearing as coefficients of curvature
corrections in the low-energy expansion of type II string theory four-graviton
scattering amplitudes. We define these Eisenstein series over all groups in the
E_n series of string duality groups, and in particular for the
infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody groups E9, E10 and E11. We show that,
remarkably, the so-called constant term of Kac-Moody-Eisenstein series contains
only a finite number of terms for particular choices of a parameter appearing
in the definition of the series. This resonates with the idea that the constant
term of the Eisenstein series encodes perturbative string corrections in
BPS-protected sectors allowing only a finite number of corrections. We underpin
our findings with an extensive discussion of physical degeneration limits in
D<3 space-time dimensions.Comment: 69 pages. v2: Added references and small additions, to be published

Duality Symmetries and G^{+++} Theories
We show that the non-linear realisations of all the very extended algebras
G^{+++}, except the B and C series which we do not consider, contain fields
corresponding to all possible duality symmetries of the on-shell degrees of
freedom of these theories. This result also holds for G_2^{+++} and we argue
that the non-linear realisation of this algebra accounts precisely for the form
fields present in the corresponding supersymmetric theory. We also find a
simple necessary condition for the roots to belong to a G^{+++} algebra.Comment: 35 pages. v2: 2 appendices added, other minor corrections. v3: tables
