    Can wild boar be surveyed using GPS?

    The Global Positioning System (GPS) is an important new technology for spatial behaviour studies of terrestrial vertebrates. Although VHF telemetry has been substantially used, our study is the first report, to our knowledge, on GPS technology used to track free-ranging wild boars. Although the need for collars larger than those used for VHF tracking, the crowded vegetation of habitat and the particular features of social group behaviour of wild boars led to some technical difficulties, three adult sows were successfully fitted with two GPS collars and one dummy GPS. The collars remained on the wild boars for over 283 days without causing any injury to the animals. Forty-one daily cycles (24 hours), as well as daily locations over 142 days, could be recorded for a single animal. Detection efficiency and fixes were better during the night than during the day. In the light of these results, the GPS technique appears to be an efficient tool to study wild boar movements. Progress in the survey of animal movements at a fine scale is of prime interest for animal management programs in order to obtain and maintain a sustainable level of animal population regarding damage problems

    Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) pathway activation by quercetin in human lens epithelial cells

    Quercetin is a dietary bioflavonoid which has been shown to inhibit lens opacification in a number of models of cataract. The objectives of this study were to determine gene expression changes in human lens epithelial cells in response to quercetin and to investigate in detail the mechanisms underlying the responses. FHL-124 cells were treated with quercetin (10 ”M) and changes in gene expression were measured by microarray. It was found that 65% of the genes with increased expression were regulated by the hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) pathway. Quercetin (10 and 30 ”M) induced a time-dependent increase in HIF-1a protein levels. Quercetin (30 ”M) was also responsible for a rapid and long-lasting translocation of HIF-1a from the cytoplasm to the nucleus. Activation of HIF-1 signaling by quercetin was confirmed by qRT–PCR which showed upregulation of the HIF-1 regulated genes EPO, VEGF, PGK1 and BNIP3. Analysis of medium taken from FHL-124 cells showed a sustained dose-dependent increase in VEGF secretion following quercetin treatment. The quercetin-induced increase and nuclear translocation of HIF-1a was reversed by addition of excess iron (100 ”M). These results demonstrate that quercetin activates the HIF-1 signaling pathway in human lens epithelial cells

    On the alleged simplicity of impure proof

    Roughly, a proof of a theorem, is “pure” if it draws only on what is “close” or “intrinsic” to that theorem. Mathematicians employ a variety of terms to identify pure proofs, saying that a pure proof is one that avoids what is “extrinsic,” “extraneous,” “distant,” “remote,” “alien,” or “foreign” to the problem or theorem under investigation. In the background of these attributions is the view that there is a distance measure (or a variety of such measures) between mathematical statements and proofs. Mathematicians have paid little attention to specifying such distance measures precisely because in practice certain methods of proof have seemed self- evidently impure by design: think for instance of analytic geometry and analytic number theory. By contrast, mathematicians have paid considerable attention to whether such impurities are a good thing or to be avoided, and some have claimed that they are valuable because generally impure proofs are simpler than pure proofs. This article is an investigation of this claim, formulated more precisely by proof- theoretic means. After assembling evidence from proof theory that may be thought to support this claim, we will argue that on the contrary this evidence does not support the claim

    Towards a Plug-and-Play and Holistic Data Mining Framework for Understanding and Facilitating Operations in Smart Buildings

    Nowadays, a significant portion of the total energy consumption is attributed to the buildings sector. In order to save energy and protect the environment, energy consumption in buildings must be more efficient. At the same time, buildings should offer the same (if not more) comfort to their occupants. Consequently, modern buildings have been equipped with various sensors and actuators and interconnected control systems to meet occupants’ requirements. Unfortunately, so far, Building Automation Systems data have not been well-exploited due to technical and cost limitations. Yet, it can be exceptionally beneficial to take full advantage of the data flowing inside buildings in order to diagnose issues, explore solutions and improve occupant-building interactions. This paper presents a plug-and-play and holistic data mining framework named PHoliData for smart buildings to collect, store, visualize and mine useful information and domain knowledge from data in smart buildings. PHoliData allows non technical experts to easily explore and understand their buildings with minimum IT support. An architecture of this framework has been introduced and a prototype has been implemented and tested against real-world settings. Discussions with industry experts have suggested the system to be extremely helpful for understanding buildings, since it can provide hints about energy efficiency improvements. Finally, extensive experiments have demonstrated the feasibility of such a framework in practice and its advantage and potential for buildings operators

    Possible Evidence for MeV Dark Matter In Dwarf Spheroidals

    It has been recently proposed that the observed 511 keV emission from the Galactic bulge could be the product of very light (1-100 MeV) annihilating dark matter particles. Other possible explanations for this signal are associated with stellar objects, such as hypernovae. In order to distinguish between annihilating light dark matter scenario and more conventional astrophysical sources for the bulge emission, we here propose the study of dwarf spheroidals such as Sagittarius. These galaxies have typical luminosities of 105L⊙10^5 L_\odot but mass-to-light ratios of ∌100\sim 100. As there are comparatively few stars, the prospects for 511 keV emission from standard astrophysical scenarios are minimal. The dwarf spheroidals do, however, contain copious amounts of dark matter. INTEGRAL/SPI has observed the Sagittarius region. Analysis of this data for 511 keV emission will provide a test of MeV dark matter which can distinguish between annihilating dark matter and more standard astrophysics. The observation of such a signal from Sagittarius should be a ``smoking gun'' for MeV dark matter.Comment: 4 pages, no figures. Version accepted by Physical Review Letter

    HIV-1 Vpu is a potent transcriptional suppressor of NF-ÎșB-elicited antiviral immune responses

    Many viral pathogens target innate sensing cascades and/or cellular transcription factors to suppress antiviral immune responses. Here, we show that the accessory viral protein U (Vpu) of HIV-1 exerts broad immunosuppressive effects by inhibiting activation of the transcription factor NF-ÎșB. Global transcriptional profiling of infected CD4 +T cells revealed that vpu-deficient HIV-1 strains induce substantially stronger immune responses than the respective wild type viruses. Gene set enrichment analyses and cytokine arrays showed that Vpu suppresses the expression of NF-ÎșB targets including interferons and restriction factors. Mutational analyses demonstrated that this immunosuppressive activity of Vpu is independent of its ability to counteract the restriction factor and innate sensor tetherin. However, Vpu-mediated inhibition of immune activation required an arginine residue in the cytoplasmic domain that is critical for blocking NF-ÎșB signaling downstream of tetherin. In summary, our findings demonstrate that HIV-1 Vpu potently suppresses NF-ÎșB-elicited antiviral immune responses at the transcriptional level
