Laser beam attenuation in LIF measurements on NO in a diesel engine
The effect of laser beam attenuation on nitric oxide measurements in a diesel engine is presented. A number ofexperimental ways to correct for this attenuation are discussed: transmission measurements, bidirectional laserinducedfluorescence, and Raman scattering by N2. Comparison of the results indicates that the attenuation isgenerally not uniform over the cylinder. Instead it seems to be less severe over the field of view (i.e. the upper partof the cylinder)

Quantitative nitric oxide measurements by means of laser-induced fluorescence in a heavy-duty Diesel engine
Quantitative in-cylinder laser-induced fluorescence measurements ofnitric oxide in a heavy-duty Diesel engine are presented. Special attention is paid to experimental techniques to assess the attenuation of the laser beam and the fluorescence signal by the cylinder contents.This attenuation can be considerable at certain stages in the combustionstroke. The temperature and pressure dependence of the fluorescence signal is described in various models. Nonconstant electronic density of states tunneling inversion for A15 superconductors: Nb3Sn
We re-examine the tunneling data on A15 superconductors by performing a
generalized McMillan-Rowell tunneling inversion that incorporates a nonconstant
electronic density of states obtained from band-structure calculations. For
Nb3Sn, we find that the fit to the experimental data can be slightly improved
by taking into account the sharp structure in the density of states, but it is
likely that such an analysis alone is not enough to completely explain the
superconducting tunneling characteristics of this material. Nevertheless, the
extracted Eliashberg function displays a number of features expected to be
present for the highest quality Nb3Sn samples.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
FRW Cosmology From Five Dimensional Vacuum Brans-Dicke Theory
We follow approach of induced matter theory for 5D vacuum BD, introduce
induced matter and potential in 4D hypersurfaces, and employ generalized FRW
type solution. We confine ourselves to scalar field and scale factors be
functions of the time. This makes the induced potential, by its definition,
vanishes. When the scale factor of fifth dimension and scalar field are not
constants, 5D eqs for any geometry admit a power law relation between scalar
field and scale factor of fifth dimension. Hence the procedure exhibits that 5D
vacuum FRW like eqs are equivalent, in general, to corresponding 4D vacuum ones
with the same spatial scale factor but new scalar field and coupling constant.
We show that 5D vacuum FRW like eqs or its equivalent 4D vacuum ones admit
accelerated solutions. For constant scalar field, eqs reduce to usual FRW eqs
with typical radiation dominated universe. For this situation we obtain
dynamics of scale factors for any geometry without any priori assumption. For
nonconstant scalar fields and spatially flat geometries, solutions are found to
be power law and exponential ones. We also employ weak energy condition for
induced matter, that allows negative/positive pressures. All types of solutions
fulfill WEC in different ranges. The power law solutions with negative/positive
pressures admit both decelerating and accelerating ones. Some solutions accept
shrinking extra dimension. By considering nonghost scalar fields and recent
observational measurements, solutions are more restricted. We illustrate that
accelerating power law solutions, which satisfy WEC and have nonghost fields,
are compatible with recent observations in ranges -4/3 < \omega </- -1.3151 and
1.5208 </- n < 1.9583 for dependence of fifth dimension scale factor with usual
scale factor. These ranges also fulfill condition nonghost fields in the
equivalent 4D vacuum BD eqs.Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, 11 table
Effects of environment on quality of tomato transplanting plants
Com a finalidade de verificar o efeito da adubação nitrogenada e intensidade luminosa sobre a qualidade das mudas de tomateiro cv Roma VF, foi instalado um experimento em con diçÔes de estufa de vidro, no Setor de Horticultura da ESALQ, Piracicaba (SP). Os tratamentos consistiram em plantas sombreadas, com e sem adubação. Foram observados a altura, diĂąmetro do caule, e desenvolvimento do sistema radicular das mudas apĂłs 32 dias de germinação e os nĂveis de carboidratos e nitrato no caule. Dos resultados concluiu-se que a adubação nitrogenada na fase de muda Ă© muito importante para se obter plantas sadias e fortes e em condiçÔes sombreadas, com adubação nitrogenada, as mudas sĂŁo maiores, com alto teor de nitrato, enquanto que em condiçÔes de pleno sol e adubada, elas possuem maior diĂąmetro e sistema radicular mais desenvolvido.In order to study the effects of shading and unshading combined with N fertilizing on tomato transplanting plants, an experiment in greenhouse conditions was carried on. It was concluded that N is important to produce healthy and strong plants. Under shading plus N fertilization, plants are taller and have high nitrate contents, while under unshading plus N fertilization, plants have higher diameter and more developed root system
Theory of Coexistence of Superconductivity and Ferroelectricity : A Dynamical Symmetry Model
We propose and investigate a model for the coexistence of Superconductivity
(SC) and Ferroelectricity (FE) based on the dynamical symmetries for
the pseudo-spin SC sector, for the displaced oscillator FE sector, and
for the composite system. We assume a minimal
symmetry-allowed coupling, and simplify the hamiltonian using a double mean
field approximation (DMFA). A variational coherent state (VCS) trial
wave-function is used for the ground state: the energy, and the relevant order
parameters for SC and FE are obtained. For positive sign of the SC-FE coupling
coefficient, a non-zero value of either order parameter can suppress the other
(FE polarization suppresses SC and vice versa). This gives some support to
"Matthias' Conjecture" [1964], that SC and FE tend to be mutually exclusive.
For such a Ferroelectric Superconductor we predict: a) the SC gap
(and ) will increase with increasing applied pressure when pressure
quenches FE as in many ferroelectrics, and b) the FE polarization will increase
with increaesing magnetic field up to . The last result is equivalent to
the prediction of a new type of Magneto-Electric Effect in a coexistent SC-FE
material. Some discussion will be given of the relation of these results to the
cuprate superconductors.Comment: 46 page

Untangling a Web of Lies: Exploring Automated Detection of Deception in Computer-Mediated Communication
Safeguarding organizations against opportunism and severe deception in computer-mediated communication (CMC) presents a major challenge to CIOs and IT managers. New insights into linguistic cues of deception derive from the speech acts innate to CMC. Applying automated text analysis to archival email exchanges in a CMC system as part of a reward program, we assess the ability of word use (micro-level), message development (macro-level), and intertextual exchange cues (meta-level) to detect severe deception by business partners. We empirically assess the predictive ability of our framework using an ordinal multilevel regression model. Results indicate that deceivers minimize the use of referencing and self-deprecation but include more superfluous descriptions and flattery. Deceitful channel partners also over structure their arguments and rapidly mimic the linguistic style of the account manager across dyadic e-mail exchanges. Thanks to its diagnostic value, the proposed framework can support firmsâ decision-making and guide compliance monitoring system development
Mediating Solidarity
With the apparent increase in the number of alternative political media, political pluralists are again faced with the question: does the proliferation of subaltern counter-publics lead to a multiplication of forces? Fragmentation in political culture is fuelled by the rise of identity politics that focuses on consumption not production. Party allegiances and class alliances give way to more fluid and informal networks of action. Postmodern theorists celebrate fragmentation because it allows the recognition of diversity in political desires, acknowledges difference between individuals and debunks the myth of homogenous political units leading ultimately to liberation. But for political efficacy there must be more than the apparent freedom that comes with embracing difference and diversity. This article argues that if we accept the description of society as fragmented, in order to create a viable political community then solidarity is crucial. In a global economy, solidarity can be mediated through new communication technologies but the challenge is to articulate the politics online with actual movements and struggles on the ground
