Cosmogenic Neutrinos Through the GRAND Lens Unveil the Nature of Cosmic Accelerators

The sources of cosmic rays with energies above 55 EeV are still mysterious. A guaranteed associated flux of ultra high energy neutrinos known as the cosmogenic neutrino flux will be measured by next generation radio facilities, such as the proposed Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND). By using the orthogonal information provided by the cosmogenic neutrino flux, we here determine the prospects of GRAND to constrain the source redshift evolution and the chemical composition of the cosmic ray sources. If the redshift evolution is known, independently on GRAND's energy resolution, GRAND with 200,000 antennas will constrain the proton/iron fraction to the ∼5−10%\sim5-10\% level after one year of data taking; on the other hand, if hints on the average source composition are given, GRAND will measure the redshift evolution of the sources to a ∼10%\sim 10\% uncertainty. However, the foreseen configuration of GRAND alone will not be able to break the degeneracy between redshift evolution of the sources and their composition. Our findings underline the discriminating potential of next generation radio array detectors and motivate further efforts in this direction.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, comments welcome; clarifying comments added, matches published versio

The Challenges of Frontline Nurse Managers A Quantitative Descriptive Study

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of this research study is to identify frontline nurse managers\u27 challenges and the complexity of their role. Design: The research explored the role of the frontline nurse leader and challenges. An exploratory, descriptive, quantitative study assessed the challenges through a survey posted to Show me your stethoscope Facebook page. Methods: A survey tool was borrowed and tailored using 35 questions. The questions covered areas or domains managed in the role of the frontline nurse manager. The survey consisted of 7 open ended questions and 28 multiple choice questions using a Likert scale of 1-5 indicating strongly agrees to the statement strongly disagrees. Findings: Forty-six members from the Facebook page Show me your stethoscope took part in the survey. The challenges were rank in order of the most challenging to the least with the three most challenging being developing critical thinking skills in staff, recruiting staff with the right competencies, and increasing patient acuity. Discussion: Frontline nurse managers need supportive mentoring relationships with senior nurse leaders, adequate preparation and training for their role, succession planning for future leaders, and assistance with retaining and recruiting staff

Predicting hospitality management students’ intention to enter employment in the hospitality industry on graduation: a person– environment fit perspective

This study investigates factors predicting hospitality management students’ intention to enter employment in the hospitality industry upon graduation.  Survey data were collected from 591 hospitality management students in a hotel management school in the Netherlands. Results of multiple regression  analyses showed that study progress negatively predicted, while preferences for large organisations, engaging work content and growth opportunities  positively predicted students’ intention to enter the hospitality industry. Supplementary analyses further revealed that among higher study year students,  growth opportunity was the most crucial predictor for intention to enter the industry. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed

Achieving preferred customer status in the Dutch plastics recycling industry

    Get PDF
The aim of this research is to gain insight into the aspects and processes in the Dutch plastic recycling industry which might lead to a preferred customer status and acquiring benefits once the status has been reached. The whole process of reaching preferred customer status goes through various phases in which customer attractiveness, supplier satisfaction, commitment and reinforcement play a role. The study used a qualitative approach. Semi-structured interviews were held with suppliers, customers and traders in the plastic recycling industry in the Netherlands. The results show that during the customer attractiveness phase, a customer needs to convince the supplier that they are dealing with a trustworthy partner. Relational dimensions are not a priority for the supplier but do play a role if operational aspects are seen as more or less equal, which is often likely to be the case in a competitive market. In contrast, traders do attach importance to the personal relationship with customers from the start. A supplier will confer a preferential status to customers who (according to their feelings) will deliver the highest levels of satisfaction. Alternatives seem to come into question mainly where someone is significantly dissatisfied with the existing customer or if a significantly better alternative arises. The whole study is summarised in a reverse marketing model. Keywords: customer attractiveness, reinforcement, supplier satisfaction, commitment, preferred customer status, reverse marketing mode

A visual analysis of a cultural tourism destination

This research investigates how a relatively unknown town that is elected as cultural capital of Europe can use visual materials to attract visitors from totally different areas in the world, particularly China. The study uses visual cues for two purposes: first, to evaluate the motivating factors that lead travellers with different cultural background to select their travel destination, and second, to explore the influence of visual communication in the promotion of cultural tourism. The research studied the impact of visual information during several stages in the visit: before the visit in the decision-making process; during the visit in the experience stage; and after the visit in the post-experience evaluation. It was found that visual material can help to frame the experience in all three stages. For that reason it is advisable for destinations to employ some kind of visual identity system management to package the city image into a clear brand. Keywords: European Capital of Culture, Leeuwarden 2018, Chinese visitors, destination branding, flanking researc

Sensorial Marketing and the Ecuadorian Cuisine

    Get PDF
The last few years the Ecuadorian cuisine has become more known. One of the reasons is the diversity of the local ingredients, another the fusion of ancestral heritage with the creativity of a new generation of chefs. For this study four in-depth interviews were held with chefs of Ecuadorian haute cuisine restaurants, three in Ecuador and one in Spain. While the restaurants all value the Ecuadorian heritage, they each choose a slightly different angle for the leading concept of their restaurants, culture, history, nature, and in the case of the Spanish restaurant reviving memories and a sense of “home away from home”. All four chefs present a remarkably strong narrative and they all consciously use sensory elements to support the harmony between this narrative and the dishes that they serve
