Charge and Statistics of Quantum Hall Quasi-Particles. A numerical study of mean values and fluctuations
We present Monte Carlo studies of charge expectation values and charge
fluctuations for quasi-particles in the quantum Hall system. We have studied
the Laughlin wave functions for quasi-hole and quasi-electron, and also Jain's
definition of the quasi-electron wave function. The considered systems consist
of from 50 to 200 electrons, and the filling fraction is 1/3. For all
quasi-particles our calculations reproduce well the expected values of charge;
-1/3 times the electron charge for the quasi-hole, and 1/3 for the
quasi-electron. Regarding fluctuations in the charge, our results for the
quasi-hole and Jain quasi-electron are consistent with the expected value zero
in the bulk of the system, but for the Laughlin quasi-electron we find small,
but significant, deviations from zero throughout the whole electron droplet. We
also present Berry phase calculations of charge and statistics parameter for
the Jain quasi-electron, calculations which supplement earlier studies for the
Laughlin quasi-particles. We find that the statistics parameter is more well
behaved for the Jain quasi-electron than it is for the Laughlin quasi-electron.Comment: 39 pages, 27 figure
Spatiotemporal patterns of area use by humans and wild reindeer in a Norwegian National Park
Human impacts have for several decades led to fragmentation of habitats for wild reindeer across Norway. In Dovrefjell – Sunndalsfjella National Park there is a complexity of human activity that threatens the seasonal migration pattern for wild reindeer around the central mountain range Snøhettamassivet. This may affect time spent in foraging and avoidance of areas, which may force the reindeer to leave territories with better quality resources and provide long-time effects as reduced body condition and reproduction. The aim of my research is to uncover the wild reindeer-human co-existence during summer in an important migration corridor by describing the spatiotemporal patterns of area use by humans and wild reindeer in the Stroplesjødalen valley. Additionally I want to discuss management implications. I observed human activity in Stroplesjødalen during the peak summer season for hikers in 2010 to map the human use of the valley and used GPS plots to describe the area use and movement patterns for wild reindeer in the same area. My findings regarding human use revealed that 80% of hikers in the area use marked trails, while 94% of hunters used areas outside the marked trails. The human traffic along the main hiking trail differed in time and space throughout the day with a peak of density in the eastern part of the valley between 12:00 – 14:00. The tourist cabin Reinheim (36 beds) had a central function in the western part of the area and caused high densities of humans in its surroundings. The reindeer seems to avoid the valley and particularly the areas in the west. The movement pattern of reindeer measured as speed and path straightness varied with distance to the hiking trails and daylight conditions. During daylight, their speed was highest within 1 km to the hiking trails, and straightness gradually increased with increasing distance to the hiking trails. My conclusion is that the cabin Reinheim and the hiking trail from Kongsvoll to Reinheim had a negative effect on reindeer area use and caused impacts on the reindeer movement rates. Stroplesjødalen might evolve to an absolute barrier if the density of visitors increases. My somewhat radical recommendation for future management of Stroplsjødalen is to close down the Reinheim cabin if the number of visitor increase, and remove infrastructure of marked trails in relation to the cabin. However, it requires development off attractions close to Snøheim and continuity of the shuttle bus at the Snøheim road. To maintain the migration pattern around the Snøhettamassivet, further development of recreational infrastructure in Stroplesjødalen and trails towards the area Kolla should be avoided.
Charge and Statistics of Quasiparticles in Fractional Quantum Hall Effec
We have studied here the charge and statistics of quasiparticle excitations
in FQH states on the basis of the Berry phase approach incorporating the fact
that even number of flux quanta can be gauged away when the Berry phase is
removed to the dynamical phase. It is observed that the charge and
statistical parameter of a quasiparticle at filling factor
are given by and
, with the fact that the charge of the quasihole is
opposite to that of the quasielectron. Using Laughlin wave function for
quasiparticles, numerical studies have been done following the work of
Kj{\o}nsberg and Myrheim \cite{KM} for FQH states at and it is
pointed out that as in case of quasiholes, the statistics parameter can be well
defined for quasielectrons having the value .Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
Engelsk sammendrag (abstract):
The aim of this study is to evaluate methods used in a research project within a psychiatric hospital. The project intends to develop collaboration between staff and relatives of persons with recently discovered serious mental illness. The overall design for this action research project is co-operative inquiry, with an aim to involve staff as active participants and co-researchers in a process to develop a service, based on scientific knowledge and practice based evidence, which meet the needs of these relatives. This evaluation focuses on methods used in the project to judge their relevance as a strategy in future development in health care practice. The evaluation relies on two perspectives; to what degree methods used in the project correspond with the theoretical fundament of co-operative inquiry, and whether methods seems to be useful in future projects. The evaluation is based on material from a semi-structured questionnaire, interviews and written project documentation. Empiric material is connected with criteria from the theoretical fundament of co-operative inquiry: Participation, Clinical experience, Locale focus, Reflexive process and Knowledge development. Changes in practice and procedures were examined as a supportive perspective of evaluation. The evaluation results shows changes in practice and procedures which regulate the cooperation with relatives, and thus the project succeed in a perspective of action research. In consideration of co-operative inquiry, the project has not succeeded in aspect of participation. Most of the staff reports that they have little feeling of authentic collaboration. The studied areas in practice shows close connection to local needs, and methods used in the project have been successfully adapted to the intension of reflective processes. Due to lack of continuity in the project, connection between reflection and action do not seem to have been sufficient taken care of. The continuity of the project and information to staff should be more focused on in future projects.
Key words: Evaluation, co-operative inquiry, action research, knowledge development in practice, psychiatric care
Numerical studies of the Pfaffian model of the nu=5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect
The Pfaffian model has been proposed for the fractional quantum Hall effect
(FQHE) at nu=5/2. We examine it for the quasihole excitations by comparison
with exact diagonalization results. Specifically, we consider the structure of
the low-energy spectrum, accuracy of the microscopic wave functions,
particle-hole symmetry, splitting of the degeneracies, and off-diagonal long
range order. We also review how the 5/2 FQHE can be understood without
appealing to the Pfaffian model. Implications for nonabelian braiding
statistics will be mentioned.Comment: one column removed from Table II. Solid State Communications, in

Birkebeinerlandet – Innlandsvikingenes rike
Virial Coefficients of Multispecies Anyons
A path integral formalism for multispecies anyons is introduced, whereby
partition functions are expressed in terms of generating functions of winding
number probability distributions. In a certain approximation, the equation of
state for exclusion statistics follows. By Monte Carlo simulation, third-order
cluster and virial coefficients are found numerically.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX 2
Classical phase space and statistical mechanics of identical particles
Starting from the quantum theory of identical particles, we show how to
define a classical mechanics that retains information about the quantum
statistics. We consider two examples of relevance for the quantum Hall effect:
identical particles in the lowest Landau level, and vortices in the
Chern-Simons Ginzburg-Landau model. In both cases the resulting {\em classical}
statistical mechanics is shown to be a nontrivial classical limit of Haldane's
exclusion statistics.Comment: 40 pages, Late
