Multiple superconducting transitions in the Sr3Ru2O7 region of Sr3Ru2O7-Sr2RuO4 eutectic crystals
We report superconducting properties of Sr3Ru2O7-Sr2RuO4 eutectic crystals,
consisting of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 with a monolayer stacking
of RuO2 planes and the metamagnetic normal metal Sr3Ru2O7 with a bilayer
stacking. Although Sr3Ru2O7 has not been reported to exhibit superconductivity
so far, our AC susceptibility measurements revealed multiple superconducting
transitions occurring in the Sr3Ru2O7 region of the eutectic crystals. The
diamagnetic shielding essentially reached the full fraction at low AC fields
parallel to the c axis. However, both the shielding fraction and the onset
temperature are easily suppressed by AC fields of larger than 0.1 mT-rms and no
anomaly was observed in the specific heat. Moreover, the critical field curves
of these transitions have a positive curvature near zero fields, which is
different from the upper critical field curve of the bulk Sr2RuO4. These facts
suggest that the superconductivity observed in the Sr3Ru2O7 region is not a
bulk property. To explain these experimental results, we propose the scenario
that stacking RuO2 planes, the building block of superconducting Sr2RuO4, are

Determining the Surface-To-Bulk Progression in the Normal-State Electronic Structure of Sr2RuO4 by Angle-Resolved Photoemission and Density Functional Theory
In search of the potential realization of novel normal-state phases on the
surface of Sr2RuO4 - those stemming from either topological bulk properties or
the interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SO) and the broken symmetry of the
surface - we revisit the electronic structure of the top-most layers by ARPES
with improved data quality as well as ab-initio LDA slab calculations. We find
that the current model of a single surface layer (\surd2x\surd2)R45{\deg}
reconstruction does not explain all detected features. The observed
depth-dependent signal degradation, together with the close quantitative
agreement with LDA+SO slab calculations based on the LEED-determined surface
crystal structure, reveal that (at a minimum) the sub-surface layer also
undergoes a similar although weaker reconstruction. This points to a
surface-to-bulk progression of the electronic states driven by structural
instabilities, with no evidence for Dirac and Rashba-type states or surface

Superconductivity in Sr2RuO4-Sr3Ru2O7 eutectic crystals
Superconducting behavior has been observed in the Sr2RuO4-Sr3Ru2O7 eutectic
system as grown by the flux-feeding floating zone technique. A supercurrent
flows across a single interface between Sr2RuO4 and Sr3Ru2O7 areas at distances
that are far beyond those expected in a conventional proximity scenario. The
current-voltage characteristics within the Sr3Ru2O7 macrodomain, as extracted
from the eutectic, exhibit signatures of superconductivity in the bilayered
ruthenate. Detailed microstructural, morphological and compositional analyses
address issues on the concentration and the size of Sr2RuO4 inclusions within
the Sr3Ru2O7 matrix. We speculate on the possibility of inhomogeneous
superconductivity in the eutectic Sr3Ru2O7 and exotic pairing induced by the

Angular dependence of the upper critical field of Sr2RuO4
One of the remaining issues concerning the spin-triplet superconductivity of
Sr2RuO4 is the strong limit of the in-plane upper critical field Hc2 at low
temperatures. In this study, we clarified the dependence of Hc2 on the angle
theta between the magnetic field and the ab plane at various temperatures, by
precisely and accurately controlling the magnetic field direction. We revealed
that, although the temperature dependence of Hc2 for |theta| > 5 is well
explained by the orbital pair-breaking effect, Hc2(T) for |theta| < 5 is
clearly limited at low temperatures. We also revealed that the Hc2 limit for
|theta| < 5 is present not only at low temperatures, but also at temperatures
close to Tc. These features may provide additional hints for clarifying the
origin of the Hc2 limit. Interestingly, if the anisotropic ratio in Sr2RuO4 is
assumed to depend on temperature, the observed angular dependence of Hc2 is
reproduced better at lower temperature with an effective-mass model for an
anisotropic three-dimensional superconductor. We discuss the observed behavior

Expansion of anti-AFP Th1 and Tc1 responses in hepatocellular carcinoma occur in different stages of disease

However, there is little information on the pattern of CD4 (Th1) and CD8 (Tc1) T-cell response to AFP in patients with HCC and their association with the clinical characteristics of patients.
Methods: We therefore analysed CD4 and CD8 T-cell responses to a panel of AFP-derived peptides in a total of 31 HCC patients and 14 controls, using an intracellular cytokine assay for IFN-Îł.
Results: Anti-AFP Tc1 responses were detected in 28.5% of controls, as well as in 25% of HCC patients with Okuda I (early tumour stage) and in 31.6% of HCC patients with stage II or III (late tumour stages). An anti-AFP Th1 response was detected only in HCC patients (58.3% with Okuda stage I tumours and 15.8% with Okuda stage II or III tumours). Anti-AFP Th1 response was mainly detected in HCC patients who had normal or mildly elevated serum AFP concentrations (P=0.00188), whereas there was no significant difference between serum AFP concentrations in these patients and the presence of an anti-AFP Tc1 response. A Th1 response was detected in 44% of HCC patients with a Child–Pugh A score (early stage of cirrhosis), whereas this was detected in only 15% with a B or C score (late-stage cirrhosis). In contrast, a Tc1 response was detected in 17% of HCC patients with a Child–Pugh A score and in 46% with a B or C score.
Conclusion: These results suggest that anti-AFP Th1 responses are more likely to be present in patients who are in an early stage of disease (for both tumour stage and liver cirrhosis), whereas anti-AFP Tc1 responses are more likely to be present in patients with late-stage liver cirrhosis. Random Spin-orbit Coupling in Spin Triplet Superconductors: Stacking Faults in Sr_2RuO_4 and CePt_3Si
The random spin-orbit coupling in multicomponent superconductors is
investigated focusing on the non-centrosymmetric superconductor CePt_3Si and
the spin triplet superconductor Sr_2RuO_4. We find novel manifestations of the
random spin-orbit coupling in the multicomponent superconductors with
directional disorders, such as stacking faults. The presence of stacking faults
is indicated for the disordered phase of CePt_3Si and Sr_2RuO_4. It is shown
that the d-vector of spin triplet superconductivity is locked to be d = k_y x -
k_x y with the anisotropy \Delta T_c/T_c0 \sim \bar{\alpha}^2/T_c0 W_z, where
\bar{\alpha}, T_c0, and W_z are the mean square root of random spin-orbit
coupling, the transition temperature in the clean limit, and the kinetic energy
along the c-axis, respectively. This anisotropy is much larger (smaller) than
that in the clean bulk Sr_2RuO_4 (CePt_3Si). These results indicate that the
helical pairing state d = k_y x - k_x y in the eutectic crystal
Sr_2RuO_4-Sr_3Ru_2O_7 is stabilized in contrast to the chiral state d = (k_x
\pm i k_y) z in the bulk Sr_2RuO_4. The unusual variation of T_c in CePt_3Si is
resolved by taking into account the weak pair-breaking effect arising from the
uniform and random spin-orbit couplings. These superconductors provide a basis

Using Airborne High Spectral Resolution Lidar Data to Evaluate Combined Active Plus Passive Retrievals of Aerosol Extinction Profiles
Aerosol extinction profiles are derived from backscatter data by constraining the retrieval with column aerosol optical thickness (AOT), for example from coincident MODIS observations and without reliance on a priori assumptions about aerosol type or optical properties. The backscatter data were acquired with the NASA Langley High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL). The HSRL also simultaneously measures extinction independently, thereby providing an ideal data set for evaluating the constrained retrieval of extinction from backscatter. We will show constrained extinction retrievals using various sources of column AOT, and examine comparisons with the HSRL extinction measurements and with a similar retrieval using data from the CALIOP lidar on the CALIPSO satellite
