Sex Trafficking Victims and Offenders in the United States

    Get PDF
This project analyzed data previously collected from the University of Michigan Human Trafficking Law Project and the United States Department of Justice in order to identify the trends and relationships among several variables pertaining to sex trafficking victims and offenders in the United States. Recommendations include suggestions on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels to prevent sex trafficking and provide treatment to survivors and offenders. Both findings from the study and the literature review indicate that sex trafficking is an emerging global crisis, in which millions of women and children are deceived and coerced into sexual slavery. Although State and federal policies have been enacted to combat sex trafficking in the United States, globalization, a culture of tolerance toward sexually aggressive behavior, the high demand for prostitution, and government corruption and/or inaction have continued to allow sex trafficking to exist as one of the most profitable crimes for offenders

Migration and Economic Impacts: Pros & Cons

    Get PDF
Economic integration GLOBALLY has proceeded rapidly over the last two decades. But the situation has been very different across this dimensions – immigration, trade, capital movements. The barriers to immigration have always remained higher[i]. Part as a result, much less is known about the impacts of illegal or legal migration than the other dimensions, and specifically about the impact, both on receiving and sending countries, of lowering barriers to the movement of people, particularly those moving from very poor to rich countries. The aim of this short discussion paper is to review the recent studies, and gaps in knowledge, concerning the economic impact of migration liberalisation, and to suggest some potential implications for policy and some solutions – decisions in the near future. (pyH)[Mo(NCS)4py2] (1) (py = pyridine) was prepared by refluxing of the mixture of KSCN and [MoCl3py3] in pyridine. After the recrystallization of 1 in pyridine, single crystals of trans-(py2H)[Mo(NCS)4py2] (2) were obtained. X-ray structure determination of 2 reveals trans slightly elongated (4 + 2) octahedral arrangement of two staggered conformated (85.9(4)°) N-bond pyridine molecules (Mo–N(py) = 2.191(6), 2.176(5) Å) and four isothiocyanato groups in square-planar orientation, bonded within the range 2.083(7)–2.106(7) Å to molybdenum atom in the anion. In the (py2H)+ cation, pyridine molecules are held together by a strong hydrogen bond with contact distance N7…N8 = 2.708(12) Å (N8–H8\u27…N7 geometry: N8–H8\u27…N7 = 175(7)°, N7…H8\u27 = 1.65(7) Å, N8–H8\u27 = 1.06(7) Å). The angle between the best planes through the pyridine–cation rings is 70.7(6)°. The results of IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy indicate the same arrangement of the ligands in the compounds 1 and 2

Multifocal hepatoblastoma in a 6-month-old girl with trisomy 18: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

Edward's syndrome (trisomy 18) is a rare entity with a reported incidence of 1/3000 to 1/7000 births. Less than 10% of patients survive beyond the first year of life, which may influence the fact that malignant tumors are rarely reported in association with this syndrome.

Case presentation

The authors report a rare case of a 6-month-old girl with trisomy 18 and multifocal hepatoblastoma. The course of the disease, autopsy results and review of the literature are presented.

Conclusion

Our case represents the seventh published case of hepatoblastoma in a patient with trisomy 18. All of the seven published cases were women, possibly due to the high preponderance of females among the children with Edward's syndrome and longer survival of females with trisomy 18 compared to males. Since both trisomy 18 and hepatoblastoma are rare conditions, the probability that a child with trisomy 18 will independently develop a hepatoblastoma is very low. Therefore, we believe that the existence of these cases in children with trisomy 18 indicates a significant association. It can be assumed that trisomy 18 potentiates the development of hepatoblastoma. Careful clinical and post-mortem studies are needed to recognize the real frequency of hepatoblastoma in children with trisomy 18, who might die from different causes with unrecognizable hepatoblastoma.</p

By refluxing a mixture of (NH4)2[MoCl5(H2O)] and KSCN in γ-picoline, crystalline trans-[(γ-pic)2H][Mo(NCS)4(γ-pic)2] (1) was prepared. After addition of P(C6H5)4Br to the solution of 1 in acetonitrile, trans-[P(C6H5)4][Mo(NCS)4(γ-pic)2]·2CH3CN (2) was isolated. Both compounds were characterized by IR spectroscopy, and their crystal structures were determined. X-ray structural analysis revealed the presence of trans-[Mo(NCS)4(γ-pic)2]– anions, with N-bonding of the NCS groups in both compounds. The positions of the ν(CN) and δ(NCS) bands are in agreement with the crystal-structure results. The results of analyses were compared with the results of the related trans-(py2H)[Mo(NCY)4py2] (Y = S,O) complexes. </p

The article outlines the main parameters of Europe’s immigration issue and dispels some of the myths surrounding it. It presents the immigration policy of the last decade and traces the reasons behind its complete or almost failure. Then, the security threat that has arisen on National level and in whole Union due to the issue’s mismanagement is pointed out. Finally, the article provides the best framework for a new immigration policy which, in order to be successful in European Union, must incorporate best international practices and must be compliant with the European law on Immigration and Asylum. By a selective exchange of ligand Br by Cl, a series of nonstoichiometric bromo-chloro-pyridine- molybdenum(III) octahedral compounds of the type (cat)[MoBraCl(4-a)py2] (cat = pyH, a = 3–1 (1, 4, 7)); cat = [(C2H5)3NH], a = 2.744 (2); cat = Rb, a = 2.278 (5); cat =[(C6H5)4)As], a = 1.258 (8) and [MoBraCl(3–a)py3] (a = 2–1 (3, 6)) have been prepared and characterized. Owing to great similarity of the powder diffraction patterns and IR spectra of compounds mer- [MoBraCl(3-a)py3] (a = 3–0) with the known monoclinic modification in the space group P21/c and compounds [MoBraCl(3-a)py3] (a = 2-1 (3, 6)), the same type of crystal lattice was confirmed. Isostructurality was observed also for the orthorhombic trans-(pyH)[MoBr4py2]](Pnma) and compounds 1 and 4, while compound 7 is isostructural to trans-(pyH)[MoCl4py2]. X-ray crystallographic analyses of 2, 5 and 8, obtained by recrystallization of (pyH)[MoBraCl(4-a)py2] (a = 3–1) with different cations, were performed. In these compounds, MoIII is octahedrally coordinated with four halogenido ions at distances 2.4953(6)–2.5920(10) Å and two pyridine molecules at distances 2.195(4)-2.220(4) Å. Trans oriented pyridine rings in compounds 5 and 8 are co-planar, while deviation from co-planarity was noticed for compound 2 (8.9(3)°). The stoichiometry of four coordinated Br and Cl atoms in these compounds is not ideal, since the structure analysis results for 2, 5 and 8 show a mixed occupancy of crystallographic sites; thus, refined population parameters for both atoms (Br and Cl) were calculated.Selektivnom zamjenom bromovoga liganda klorovim dobijena je i karakterizirana serija nestehiometrijskih bromo-kloro-piridin-MoIII kompleksa tipa (cat)[MoBraCl(4–a)py2] (cat = pyH, a = 3–1 (1, 4, 7); cat = [(C2H5)3NH], a = 2.744 (2); cat = Rb, a = 2.278 (5); cat = [(C6H5)4As], a = 1.258 (8)) i [MoBraCl(3–a)py3] (a = 2–1 (3, 6)). Uslijed velike sličnosti difraktograma praha i IR spektara spojeva mer-[MoBraCl(3–a)py3] (a = 3–0) poznate monoklinske modifikacije u prostornoj grupi P21/c i spojeva [MoBraCl(3–a)py3] (a = 2–1 (3, 6)), potvr|en je isti tip kristalne re{etke.
