    Nonlinear Optical Response of Spin Density Wave Insulators

    We calculate the third order nonlinear optical response in the Hubbard model within the spin density wave (SDW) mean field ansatz in which the gap is due to onsite Coulomb repulsion. We obtain closed-form analytical results in one dimension (1D) and two dimension (2D), which show that nonlinear optical response in SDW insulators in 2D is stronger than both 3D and 1D. We also calculate the two photon absorption (TPA) arising from the stress tensor term. We show that in the SDW, the contribution from stress tensor term to the low-energy peak corresponding to two photon absorption becomes identically zero if we consider the gauge invariant current properly.Comment: we use \psfrag in figur

    Study of Liquefaction Damages of Quay-Walls and Breakwaters During Kobe Earthquake

    During Kobe Earthquake, very extensive damages of harbor facilities such as quay-wall and breakwater occurred in Kobe Port and also along the coastal areas between Kobe and Osaka cities. Major causes of the damages were the liquefaction of sands underlying and behind the concrete caisson and also strong earthquake shaking force on the caisson. The degree of damage varied considerably depending on location and also on the size of structure. In order to understand the mechanism of damage as well as the factors that controlled the degree of damage, it was necessary to examine and analyze the case records of damages of these structures. This paper describes the result of such study on liquefaction damage of quay-walls and breakwaters. Through the study, it was found that the movement of sand at shallow depth below the caisson base is mainly responsible for a large settlement of caisson, but the mode of deformation is different between quay wall and breakwater. Also an effective stress liquefaction analysis was performed on the damaged quay-walls and breakwaters in order to check the applicability of effective stress liquefaction analysis on damage assessment. It was found that the effective stress analysis may be used to establish the overall trend of damage variation with the intensity of seismic motion, but problems exist in setting the dynamic parameters for the analysis, such as damping parameters, in order to obtain a reliable result

    Magnetoconductivity of Hubbard bands induced in Silicon MOSFETs

    Sodium impurities are diffused electrically to the oxide-semiconductor interface of a silicon MOSFET to create an impurity band. At low temperature and at low electron density, the band is split into an upper and a lower sections under the influence of Coulomb interactions. We used magnetoconductivity measurements to provide evidence for the existence of Hubbard bands and determine the nature of the states in each band.Comment: In press in Physica

    Nonlinear optical response and spin-charge separation in one-dimensional Mott insulators

    We theoretically study the nonlinear optical response and photoexcited states of the Mott insulators. The nonlinear optical susceptibility \chi^(3) is calculated by using the exact diagonalization technique on small clusters. From the systematic study of the dependence of \chi^(3) on dimensionality, we find that the spin-charge separation plays a crucial role in enhancing \chi^(3) in the one-dimensional (1D) Mott insulators. Based on this result, we propose a holon-doublon model, which describes the nonlinear response in the 1D Mott insulators.     Virtual patients to explore and develop clinical case summary statement skills amongst Japanese resident physicians: A mixed methods study

    Background: In Western clinical training, formulation of a summary statement (SS) is a core exercise for articulation, evaluation, and improvement of clinical reasoning (CR). In Japanese clinical training, structured guidance in developing CR, including opportunity for SS practice, is uncommon, and the present status of case summarization skills is unclear. We used Virtual Patients (VPs) to explore Japanese junior residents' SS styles and the effectiveness of VPs on improving SS quality. Methods: All first-year junior resident physicians at 4 residency programs (n = 54) were assigned randomized sequences of 5 VP modules, rolled out at 6 day intervals. During each module, participants free-texted a case summary and then reviewed a model summary. Thematic analysis was used to identify SS styles and each SS was categorized accordingly. Frequency of SS styles, and SS CR quality determined by 1) an internally developed Key Feature rubric and 2) demonstration of semantic qualification, were compared across modules. Results: Four SS styles were identified: numbered features matched to differential diagnoses, differential diagnoses with supportive comments, feature listing, and narrative summarization. From module #1 to #5, significant increases in the narrative summarization SS style (p = 0.016), SS CR quality score (p = 0.021) and percentage of semantically driven SS (p = 0.003) were observed. Conclusions: Our study of Japanese junior residents identified distinct clinical case summary statement styles, and observed adoption of the narrative summarization style and improvement in the CR quality of summary statements during a series of VP cases

    Protective role of nitric oxide in ischemia and reperfusion injury of the liver

    Background: The suppressed production of nitric oxide (NO), associated with endothelial dysfunction, is thought to be a cause of ischemia and reperfusion injury of the liver. But findings of the salutary effects of NO enhancement on such injury have been conflicting. In this study, we tested our hypothesis that NO enhancement would attenuate ischemic liver injury. For this purpose, an NO precursor, L-arginine, and a novel NO donor, FK409, were applied to a 2-hour total hepatic vascular exclusion model in dogs. Study Design: L-arginine was administered IV at a dose of 100 mg/kg twice (n = 5), while 300 mg/kg twice of FK409 was infused continuously into the portal vein (n = 5). The drugs were given to the animals for 30 and 60 minutes before and after ischemia, respectively. Nontreated animals were used as the control (n = 10). Two-week survival, systemic and hepatic hemodynamics indices, liver function tests, energy metabolism, and histopathology were analyzed. Results: Both treatments comparably augmented hepatic tissue blood flow, decreased liver enzyme release, and increased high-energy phosphate restoration during the reperfusion period, all of which contributed to rescuing all of the treated animals from the 2-hour total hepatic ischemia. In contrast, ischemia caused 70% mortality in the control group. Histologically, structural abnormality and neutrophil infiltration were markedly attenuated by the treatments. Systemic hypotension was observed in the animals treated with FK409, however. Conclusions: Our data demonstrate that NO enhancement alleviates the liver injury caused by ischemia and reperfusion. The supplementation of L-arginine, rather than FK409, is considered more applicable to clinical use because of the absence of systemic adverse effects
