A Study of Speed of the Boundary Element Method as applied to the Realtime Computational Simulation of Biological Organs

In this work, possibility of simulating biological organs in realtime using the Boundary Element Method (BEM) is investigated. Biological organs are assumed to follow linear elastostatic material behavior, and constant boundary element is the element type used. First, a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is used to speed up the BEM computations to achieve the realtime performance. Next, instead of the GPU, a computer cluster is used. Results indicate that BEM is fast enough to provide for realtime graphics if biological organs are assumed to follow linear elastostatic material behavior. Although the present work does not conduct any simulation using nonlinear material models, results from using the linear elastostatic material model imply that it would be difficult to obtain realtime performance if highly nonlinear material models that properly characterize biological organs are used. Although the use of BEM for the simulation of biological organs is not new, the results presented in the present study are not found elsewhere in the literature.Comment: preprint, draft, 2 tables, 47 references, 7 files, Codes that can solve three dimensional linear elastostatic problems using constant boundary elements (of triangular shape) while ignoring body forces are provided as supplementary files; codes are distributed under the MIT License in three versions: i) MATLAB version ii) Fortran 90 version (sequential code) iii) Fortran 90 version (parallel code

    Simulations using meshfree methods

In this paper, attempt is made to solve a few problems using the Polynomial Point Collocation Method (PPCM), the Radial Point Collocation Method (RPCM), Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), and the Finite Point Method (FPM). A few observations on the accuracy of these methods are recorded. All the simulations in this paper are three dimensional linear elastostatic simulations, without accounting for body forces.Comment: preprint (draft) + 3 figures, 1 table, 2 appendices, 2 images, 1 MATLAB cod

Authentic Materials in Extensive Reading Class at Stain Ponorogo

It is widely believed that English Foreign Language (EFL) learners need to develop their language proficiency by getting so much input. Moreover, students need to be familiarized with the real English usage where real forms of communication and cultural knowledge are crucially exposed. Teaching through authentic materials will make the learners feel that they are learning a real language which is used by the real native speakers for real communication. incorporating authentic materials helps students acquire an effective communicative competence in the language focus. The research intended to describe the implementation of authentic materials in extensive reading class, the problems arise and the students' responses toward the authentic materials in extensive reading class. The design of the research was Descriptive Qualitative method and the research subject was the lecturer of Extensive Reading class and 33 students in B class of the fourth semester of STAIN Ponorogo who took Extensive Reading subject. The instruments used were in the form of observation sheet, interview guideline and questionnaire. The implementation of authentic materials in extensive reading class covered some procedures into three main phases namely (1) Pre Activity, (2) Main Activity and (3) PostActivity. The activities in main activity are as follows: (a) Pre Activity; (b) Whilst Activity; and (3) The language focus stage. There were problems arose during the implementation in terms of complicated planning, more time allocation and some disinterested students. Finally, the students showed significantly positive attitude toward the implementation of authentic materials in extensive reading class

Extracting Three Dimensional Surface Model of Human Kidney from the Visible Human Data Set using Free Software

    Get PDF
Three dimensional digital model of a representative human kidney is needed for a surgical simulator that is capable of simulating a laparoscopic surgery involving kidney. Buying a three dimensional computer model of a representative human kidney, or reconstructing a human kidney from an image sequence using commercial software, both involve (sometimes significant amount of) money. In this paper, author has shown that one can obtain a three dimensional surface model of human kidney by making use of images from the Visible Human Data Set and a few free software packages (ImageJ, ITK-SNAP, and MeshLab in particular). Images from the Visible Human Data Set, and the software packages used here, both do not cost anything. Hence, the practice of extracting the geometry of a representative human kidney for free, as illustrated in the present work, could be a free alternative to the use of expensive commercial software or to the purchase of a digital model.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted versio

Development of OCIPSE Learning Model to Increase Students' Scientific Creativity in Natural Science Learning

This Research & Development (R & D) has the main goal to develop and produce OCIPSE learning model. The main product of this research is the OCIPSE learning model with five phases, they are 1) Orient and organize the students for study; 2) Collaborative Investigation; 3) Presentation and discussion; 4) Strengthening of scientific creativity; and 5) Evaluate and provide recognition. The OCIPSE learning model' quality data is obtained through an expert validation process by using the OCIPSE learning model Qualification Assessment Instrument. The OCIPSE learning model quality analysis used an average validity score, single measures ICC, and Cronbach's coefficient alpha. The result of the research shows OCIPSE learning model with average content validity (3.69), construct validity (3.69), with the validity of each aspect statistically in (rα = .92) and reliability in (α = .87).  The results of this study indicate that the developed OCIPSE learning model was declared qualified by experts. The research implication is that a qualified OCIPSE learning model can be used to enhance the scientific creativity of junior high school students in natural science learning.&nbsp

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a syndrome manifested by amenorrhea, hirsuitism and obesity associated with enlarged polycystic ovaries. It is the most common endocrine disorder in a woman of reproductive age. Furthermore it presents with infertility, abnormal bleeding, increased incidences of pregnancy loss and pregnancy related complications. Most patients present with elevated levels of androgens, Luteinizing hormone (LH), Oestrogen and Prolactin. The aetiology is multifactorial with the combination of genetic and environmental factors. Certain hypothesis related to etio-pathogenesis still remains unknown. Pelvic ultrasound is a major diagnostic tool determines the presence of multiple ovarian cysts ranging between 2mm and 9mm. Hormonal therapy and LOD (Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling) are the only line of treatment in modern science whereas, Ayurvedic management offers lifestyle changes and medications having Tridoshahara, Srotoshodhaka & Anulomaka properties with its holistic approach. So, in the present study – Agnitundi vati, Sukumara kashayam and Nasya with Kalyanaka Ghrita, were administered in a patient complaining of irregular cycles due to PCOD and infertility. As a result of the treatment, patient not only regularised her cycles but even conceived. Nasya is the most effective method of restoring normal ovulation/ menstruation and thus maintains equilibrium of endocrine functions. The above said line of treatment was found to be cost effective and easily accessible. Further clinical trials can be conducted to assess the efficacy of the drugs
