Studies in early transition metal organometallic chemistry

    Get PDF
The work in this thesis is separated into two sections: Chapters 1 to 6 are concerned with the synthesis and characterisation of amide functionalised cyclopentadienyl complexes of Group 4, 5, 6 and 8 transition metals. Chapters 7 to 9 involve a study into complexes containing potential a-agostic interactions. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to functionalised cyclopentadienyl complexes and also to the ligand C(_5)H(_5)(CH(_2))(_3)N(H)Me. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis of the Group 6 complexes of tungsten and molybdenum, M[ƞ(^5):ƞ(^1)-C(_5)H(_4)(CH(_2))(_3)NMe](NR)(_2) by different routes, their chemistry, and subsequent reactions. Chapter 3 covers the preparation of the Group 4 complexes of zirconium and titanium, M[ƞ(^5):ƞ -C(_5))H(_4)(CH(_2))(_3)NMe](C(_5)H(_5))Cl, their subsequent reactions, and potential as olefin polymerisation catalysts. Chapter 4 contains the synthesis of the Group 5 complexes of niobium and tantalum, M[ƞ(^5):ƞ(^1)-C(_5)H(_4)(CH(_2))(_3)NMe](N(^t)Bu)(NH(^t)Bu).Chapter 5 deals with the preparation of the Group 5 and 6 vanadium and chromium chloride complexes M[ƞ(^5):ƞ(^1)-C(_5)H(_4)(CH(_2))(_3)NMe]Cl, their reactions, and potential as olefin polymerisation catalysts. Chapter 6 descibes the preparation of some iron complexes. The synthesis of the ferrocene, Fe[ƞ(^5)-C(_5)H(_4)(CH(_2))(_3)N(H)Me](_2), and the bridged carbonyl complex, {Fe[ƞ(^5):ƞ(^1)-C(_5)H(_4)(CH(_2))(_3)N(H)Me](CO)(μ-CO)}(_2), are described. Chapter 7 provides an introduction to a-agostic interactions, the use of the Isotopic Perturbation of Resonance (IPR) technique as a means of characterisation, and the preparation of deuterated starting materials to perform such investigations. Chapter 8 investigates the complexes MeTiC(_3)L (L = dme, tmeda, diphos), W(N(^t)Bu)(_2)Me(_2), and Mo(N-(_2),(_6)-(^i)Pr(_2)C(_6)H(_3))(_2)Me(_2) for a-agostic interactions, using the IPR technique Chapter 9 describes the synthesis of and investigation for a-agostic bonds in zirconium and titanium neopentyl chloro complexes MNp(_x)Cl(_4-x) (x = 1 - 4).The Appendices outline the preparative and analytical methods used, and X-ray crystallographic data

Optical nanolithography using a scanning near-field probe with an integrated light source

    Get PDF
An ultracompact near-field optical probe is described that is based on a single, integrated assembly consisting of a gallium nitride (GaN) light-emitting diode (LED), a microlens, and a cantilever assembly containing a hollow pyramidal probe with a subwavelength aperture at its apex. The LED emits ultraviolet light and may be used as a light source for near-field photolithographic exposure. Using this simple device compatible with many commercial atomic force microscope systems, it is possible to form nanostructures in photoresist with a resolution of 35 nm, corresponding to λ/10. © 2008 American Institute of Physics

    Demystifying Airline Syncope

    Get PDF
Syncope forms a major part of medical in-flight emergencies contributing one-in-four in-flight medical events accounting to 70% of flight diversions. In such patients, it is important to elucidate the pathophysiology of syncope prior to diversion. Postural hypotension is the most common etiology of in-flight syncopal events. However, individuals without any underlying autonomic dysfunction can still experience syncope from hypoxia also known as airline syncope. Initial steps in managing such patients include positioning followed by the airway, breathing and circulation of resuscitation. These interventions need to be in close coordination with ground control to determine decision for flight diversion. Interventions which have been tried for prevention include mental challenge and increased salt and fluid intake. The current paper enhances the understanding of airline syncope by summarizing the associated pathophysiologic mechanisms and the management medical personnel can initiate with limited resources

Determinants of Capital Structure: Evidence from Ghanaian Firms

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the determinants of capital structure using dataset from 33 listed and non-listed companies during the period 2003 – 2007 in Ghana.  A multiple regression analysis of pooled-cross sectional and time-series observations have been employed in the analysis.  The results identify long-term debt to be irrelevant component of capital structure of large unquoted and quoted firms in Ghana as there is a greater reliance on equity.  Furthermore, profitability, size, business risk and tangible assets have positive correlation with level of gearing of companies in Ghana.  On the other hand, growth, and tax indicate a negative correlation with the level of gearing. Keywords: Capital structure, financing decisions, listed, non-listed, Ghana

The impact of self-help groups on pastoral women’s empowerment and agency: A study in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Abstract While women in pastoralist communities are key stakeholders in the production of milk and dairy products for income generation, they are largely ignored in other areas of development such as health. The need to involve women self-help groups, in pastoralist areas in both animal health and human health development programmes, is essential, particularly given the high incidence of zoonotic diseases in these communities (Maudlin I, Eisler MC and Welburn SC, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 364(1530):2777-2787, 2009). Understanding the process and impact of social networks on livelihoods is essential for any development programme that aims to prevent and control zoonotic diseases. This study examines the roles and responsibilities of women self-help groups in Kachia Grazing Reserve and Bokkos, Jos Plateau, Nigeria. The findings show that groups promoting social, physical and psychological health strongly motivated women’s involvement in self-help groups. Self-help activities showed commitment to effect a change in their livelihoods, despite constraining environmental, cultural and social factors. Engagement of women’s self-help groups in livestock development programmes offers a powerful instrument for driving forward the One Health practice in pastoralist communities, promoting human, animal and environmental health and well-being

Background: Being a maladaptive means of coping with stress, alcohol abuse may be associated with level of terrorism in a community. Jos has had a number of terrorists’ attacks which have had devastating effects on the city and its environs. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of terrorism catastrophizing, hazardous alcohol use as well as the relationship between terrorism catastrophizing and hazardous alcohol use among students of the Plateau State Polytechnic, Jos Campus. Methods: A cross sectional study of 230 students in the departments of accountancy, business administration and management who completed self-administered questionnaires during one of their classes following a random cluster sampling of departments. Results: The TCS showed that 43.5% of the participants had terrorism catastrophizing. Pearson correlation showed a high significant positive correlation (p<0.05) across the three dimensions of terrorism catastrophizing: rumination, r=0.807; magnification, r=0.726; and helplessness, r=0.754. However, no significant correlation exists between terrorism catastrophising (rumination, magnification and helplessness), alcohol use disorder, r = -0.016, p = 0.817 (AUDITc), and problem drinking behavior, r= -0.157, p=0.06.Conclusions: There was no positive correlation between terrorism catastrophizing and hazardous alcohol drinking
