    The Spin Period of EX Hydrae

    We show that the spin period of the white dwarf in the magnetic CV EX Hydrae represents an equilibrium state in which the corotation radius is comparable with the distance from the white dwarf to the inner Lagrange point. We also show that a continuum of spin equilibria exists at which Pspin is significantly longer than \sim 0.1 Porb. Most systems occupying these equilibrium states should have orbital periods below the CV period gap, as observed.Comment: MNRAS, accepte

    The well-being of British expatriate retirees in southern Europe

    This article examines the personal outcomes of overseas residence in later life, by analysing some findings from the first large-scale, comparative study of the retirement of British citizens to southern Europe. Four study areas are compared: Tuscany in Italy, Malta, the Costa del Sol of Spain, and the Algarve region of Portugal. The analysis focuses on the expressed reasons for moving to and residing in the areas, the reported advantages and disadvantages, and the respondents' predictions of whether they would stay or leave in response to adverse and beneficial events. Overall the subjects give very positive reports, but there are considerable differences among the four areas. The associations of individual variation in well-being with both a person's ‘temporal commitment’ to the area and to facets of their social integration are analysed. The onset of severe incapacity, sufficient to prevent the continued running of a home, is the event most likely to cause people to leave their adopted areas of residence

    A method for a computer-aided design of a class of optimum filters, having specifications in the frequency domain of both magnitude and phase, is described. The method, an extension to the work of Steiglitz, uses the Fletcher-Powell algorithm to minimize a weighted squared magnitude and phase criterion. Results using the algorithm for the design of filters having specified phase as well as specified magnitude and phase compromise are presented

    Charged lepton contributions to the solar neutrino mixing and theta_13

    A charged lepton contribution to the solar neutrino mixing induces a contribution to theta_13, barring cancellations/correlations, which is independent of the model building options in the neutrino sector. We illustrate two robust arguments for that contribution to be within the expected sensitivity of high intensity neutrino beam experiments. We find that the case in which the neutrino sector gives rise to a maximal solar angle (the natural situation if the hierarchy is inverse) leads to a theta_13 close to or exceeding the experimental bound depending on the precise values of theta_12, theta_23, an unknown phase and possible additional contributions. We finally discuss the possibility that the solar angle originates predominantly in the charged lepton sector. We find that the construction of a model of this sort is more complicated.     Hopf algebras and characters of classical groups

    Schur functions provide an integral basis of the ring of symmetric functions. It is shown that this ring has a natural Hopf algebra structure by identifying the appropriate product, coproduct, unit, counit and antipode, and their properties. Characters of covariant tensor irreducible representations of the classical groups GL(n), O(n) and Sp(n) are then expressed in terms of Schur functions, and the Hopf algebra is exploited in the determination of group-subgroup branching rules and the decomposition of tensor products. The analysis is carried out in terms of n-independent universal characters. The corresponding rings, CharGL, CharO and CharSp, of universal characters each have their own natural Hopf algebra structure.     Analysis of distortion data from TF30-P-3 mixed compression inlet test

    A program was conducted to reduce and analyze inlet and engine data obtained during testing of a TF30-P-3 engine operating behind a mixed compression inlet. Previously developed distortion analysis techniques were applied to the data to assist in the development of a new distortion methodology. Instantaneous distortion techniques were refined as part of the distortion methodology development. A technique for estimating maximum levels of instantaneous distortion from steady state and average turbulence data was also developed as part of the program
