A Spectroscopic Survey of a Sample of Active M Dwarfs
A moderate resolution spectroscopic survey of Fleming's sample of 54 X-ray
selected M dwarfs with photometric distances less than 25 pc is presented.
Radial and rotation velocities have been measured by fits to the H-alpha
profiles. Radial velocities have been measured by cross correlation. Artificial
broadening of an observed spectrum has produced a relationship between H-alpha
FWHM and rotation speed, which we use to infer rotation speeds for the entire
sample by measurement of the H-alpha emission line. We find 3 ultra-fast
rotators (UFRs, vsini > 100km/s), and 8 stars with 30 < vsini < 100 km/s. The
UFRs have variable emission. Cross-correlation velocities measured for
ultra-fast rotators (UFRs) are shown to depend on rotation speed and the
filtering used. The radial velocity dispersion of the sample is 17 km/s. A new
double emission line spectroscopic binary with a period of 3.55 days has been
discovered, and another known one is in the sample. Three other objects are
suspected spectroscopic binaries, and at least six are visual doubles. The only
star in the sample observed to have significant lithium is a known TW Hya
Association member, TWA 8A. These results show that there are a number of young
(< 10^8 yr) and very young (< 10^7 yr) low mass stars in the immediate solar
neighbourhood. The H-alpha activity strength does not depend on rotation speed.
Our fast rotators are less luminous than similarly fast rotators in the
Pleiades. They are either younger than the Pleiades, or gained angular momentum

Identification of novel small molecules that elevate Klotho expression
The absence of Klotho (KL) from mice causes the development of disorders associated with human aging and decreased longevity, whereas increased expression prolongs lifespan. With age, KL protein levels decrease, and keeping levels consistent may promote healthier aging and be disease-modifying. Using the KL promoter to drive expression of luciferase, we conducted a high-throughput screen to identify compounds that activate KL transcription. Hits were identified as compounds that elevated luciferase expression at least 30%. Following validation for dose-dependent activation and lack of cytotoxicity, hit compounds were evaluated further in vitro by incubation with opossum kidney and Z310 rat choroid plexus cells, which express KL endogenously. All compounds elevated KL protein compared with control. To determine whether increased protein resulted in an in vitro functional change, we assayed FGF23 (fibroblast growth factor 23) signalling. Compounds GâI augmented ERK (extracellular-signal-regulated kinase) phosphorylation in FGFR (fibroblast growth factor receptor)-transfected cells, whereas co-transfection with KL siRNA (small interfering RNA) blocked the effect. These compounds will be useful tools to allow insight into the mechanisms of KL regulation. Further optimization will provide pharmacological tools for in vivo studies of KL

Technological Advances to Address Current Issues in Entomology: 2020 Student Debates
The 2020 Student Debates of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) were live-streamed during the Virtual Annual Meeting to debate current, prominent entomological issues of interest to members. The Student Debates Subcommittee of the National ESA Student Affairs Committee coordinated the student efforts throughout the year and hosted the live event. This year, four unbiased introductory speakers provided background for each debate topic while four multi-university teams were each assigned a debate topic under the theme âTechnological Advances to Address Current Issues in Entomologyâ. The two debate topics selected were as follows: 1) What is the best taxonomic approach to identify and classify insects? and 2) What is the best current technology to address the locust swarms worldwide? Unbiased introduction speakers and debate teams began preparing approximately six months before the live event. During the live event, teams shared their critical thinking and practiced communication skills by defending their positions on either taxonomical identification and classification of insects or managing the damaging outbreaks of locusts in crops
Shall I tell my mentor? Exploring the mentor-student relationship and its impact on studentsâ raising concerns on clinical placement
Aims
To explore student nurses' and nurse mentors' perceptions and experiences of raising concerns on clinical placement and the influence (if any) of their relationship on this process. A secondary aim is to consider the above, from a regulatory perspective in light of current literature and policy developments.
Background
Raising concerns whilst on clinical placement has been shown to be challenging for student nurses internationally. Registered nurses in the UK (in this case called ânurse mentorsâ) facilitate learning and assessment in practice. However, limited research exists on the influence of the relationship between the nurse mentor and student nurse on the raising concerns process.
Design
A qualitative approach was used to undertake secondary thematic analysis of interview data. The primary data set was generated during a PhD study, focusing on the mentorâstudent dynamic and the possible influence of this relationship on students' raising concerns.
Methods
30 individual semiâstructured interviews were subjected to concurrent and thematic analysis. Interviews were undertaken with student nurses (n = 16) and nurse mentors (n = 14) between April 2016âJanuary 2018. The COREQ 32âitem checklist was used during the preparation of this article.
Findings
The following three interrelated analytical themes were generated from the data, âdeveloping a mentorâstudent relationship," âkeeping your mentor sweetâ and âthe mentor role in the raising concerns process.â
Conclusion
Our analysis of participants' experiences and perceptions offers an original contribution to understanding the factors associated with student nurses raising concerns in practice. Student nurses and most mentors believed that students should be encouraged and supported to raise concerns, but students' decisions were strongly influenced by their perceptions of the immediate interpersonal and educational context. Similar barriers to raising concerns have been shown to exist regardless of geographical boundaries, therefore the findings of this study are nationally and internationally relevant
Vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 among symptomatic persons aged â„12âyears with reported contact with COVID-19 cases, February-September 2021
BACKGROUND: Individuals in contact with persons with COVID-19 are at high risk of developing COVID-19; protection offered by COVID-19 vaccines in the context of known exposure is poorly understood.
METHODS: Symptomatic outpatients aged â„12âyears reporting acute onset of COVID-19-like illness and tested for SARS-CoV-2 between February 1 and September 30, 2021 were enrolled. Participants were stratified by self-report of having known contact with a COVID-19 case in the 14âdays prior to illness onset. Vaccine effectiveness was evaluated using the test-negative study design and multivariable logistic regression.
RESULTS: Among 2229 participants, 283/451 (63%) of those reporting contact and 331/1778 (19%) without known contact tested SARS-CoV-2-positive. Adjusted vaccine effectiveness was 71% (95% confidence interval [CI], 49%-83%) among fully vaccinated participants reporting a known contact versus 80% (95% CI, 72%-86%) among those with no known contact (p-value for interactionâ=â0.2).
CONCLUSIONS: This study contributes to growing evidence of the benefits of vaccinations in preventing COVID-19 and support vaccination recommendations and the importance of efforts to increase vaccination coverage
