    Chemical and physical modification of petroleum, coal-tar, and coal-extract pitches by air-blowing

    Treatment by air-blowing was pursued as a process to modify the properties of pitches. The focus of this research was to compare the effects of air-blowing a coal-extract pitch with a petroleum pitch and coal-tar binder pitch. Hydrogenation of a bituminous coal in tetralin was used to produce the coal-extract pitch. The three pitches were air-blown in a 1-liter autoclave at temperatures of 250°C, 275°C, and 300°C for various time periods. The air-blown pitches were then characterized by softening point, coke yield, solubility, viscosity, density, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, FTIR, and optical texture. The results showed that air-blowing was a very effective way to increase the softening point, coke yield, density, and viscosity for all of the materials. The viscosity of the pitches was described well using the WLF model. Air blowing increased the carbon-to-hydrogen ratio, but little oxygen was incorporated into the pitch product. van Krevelen diagrams indicated that the coal-extract, petroleum, and coal-tar pitch each followed different mechanisms during the course of air blowing, emphasizing that compositional details must be considered in describing reaction details. Kinetic modeling of the air-blowing process showed an activation energy of approximately 16 kcal/mol for all three pitches. The optical texture of all of the pitches was purely isotropic before and after air-blowing treatment.     Mechanized Percussion Well Drilling

    The Mechanized Percussion Well Drilling Project seeks to design a simple mechanized well drilling system to be used for drilling shallow water wells in Burkina Faso, Africa. These systems will be operated by local drilling teams, allowing them to earn an income for themselves and their families. Currently our end users, the Burkinabe Well Drilling Team, have trouble drilling through hard rock layers, and often must abandon holes due to inadequate equipment. The goal of this project is to enable the drillers to efficiently drill through these rock layers with a mechanized percussion rig and supporting drilling equipment. One of the areas the project has focused on this year was testing our new steel cathead, a critical piece of the drilling rig which severely wore during in-country testing in the summer of 2017. After 40 hours of testing with no visible wear, we were confident that our new cathead would be sufficient. We also designed a new, heavier drill bit that was more able to concentrate the force of each impact. Finally, we tested our system using ropes that can be bought in Burkina Faso to ensure our system will be sustainable for our end users.https://mosaic.messiah.edu/engr2020/1003/thumbnail.jp

    4-aminopyridine toxicity: a case report and review of the literature.

    INTRODUCTION: 4-Aminopyridine (4-AP) selectively blocks voltage-gated potassium channels, prolongs the action potential, increases calcium influx, and subsequently, enhances interneuronal and neuromuscular synaptic transmission. This medication has been studied and used in many disease processes hallmarked by poor neuronal transmission in both the central and peripheral nervous systems including: multiple sclerosis (MS), spinal cord injuries (SCI), botulism, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and myasthenia gravis. It has also been postulated as a potential treatment of verapamil toxicity and reversal agent for anesthesia-induced neuromuscular blockade. To date, there have been limited reports of either intentional or accidental 4-AP toxicity in humans. Both a case of a patient with 4-AP toxicity and review of the literature are discussed, highlighting commonalities observed in overdose. CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old man with progressive MS presented with diaphoresis, delirium, agitation, and choreathetoid movements after a presumed 4-AP overdose. 4-AP concentration at 6 h was 140 ng/mL. With aggressive benzodiazepine administration and intubation, he recovered uneventfully. DISCUSSION: The commonalities associated with 4-AP toxicity conforms to what is known about its mechanism of action combining cholinergic features including diaphoresis, altered mental status, and seizures with dopamine-related movement abnormalities including tremor, choreoathetosis, and dystonia. Management of patients poisoned by 4-AP centers around good supportive care with definitive airway management and controlling CNS hyperexcitability aggressively with gamma-aminobutyric acid agonist agents. Adjunctive use of dopamine antagonists for extrapyramidal effects after sedation is a treatment possibility. As 4-aminopyridine recently received Federal Drug Administration approval for the treatment of ambulation in patients with MS, physicians should be keenly aware of its presentation, mechanism of action, and management in overdose

    Impact of the new definition for pulmonary hypertension in patients with lung disease: an analysis of the United Network for Organ Sharing database

    The implications of the recent change in the definition of pulmonary hypertension on epidemiology and outcomes are not known. We sought to determine the percentage of patients with the two most common lung diseases that would be reclassified regarding the presence/absence of pulmonary hypertension with the revised definition. A query of the United Network for Organ Sharing database was performed. The percentage of patients meeting the current and previous definition of pulmonary hypertension was described. Outcomes of patients stratified by the current and previous definitions were compared. There were 15,563 patients with right heart catheterization data analyzed. Pulmonary hypertension was more prevalent in both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis under the new definition at 52.4% versus 82.4%, and 47.6% versus 73.6%, respectively. 'Pre-capillary' pulmonary hypertension by the new definition was lower at 28.1% for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 36.8% for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Of the patients with pulmonary hypertension by the old definition, 23.9% of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients and 18.7% of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients were not classified as pulmonary hypertension by the new definition. Conversely, 15.9% of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients and 15.1% of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients who did not meet diagnostic criteria for pulmonary hypertension by the old definition did have pulmonary hypertension by the new definition. Patients in both disease categories had shorter transplant-free waitlist survival in the presence of pulmonary hypertension by both the new and old definitions. There was a trend toward the new definition of pre-capillary pulmonary hypertension better discerning outcomes compared to the old definition of pulmonary hypertension in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients. Most patients with advanced lung disease who are listed for lung transplantation have pulmonary hypertension, but fewer have pre-capillary pulmonary hypertension than pulmonary hypertension by the old definition. Both the old and new definition of precapillary pulmonary hypertension appear to discern outcomes among the two groups of lung disease analyzed, with some evidence to suggest that the new definition performs slightly better in the idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis population

    A Spectroscopic Study of Mass Outflows in the Interacting Binary RY Scuti

    The massive interacting binary RY Scuti is an important representative of an active mass-transferring system that is changing before our eyes and which may be an example of the formation of a Wolf-Rayet star through tidal stripping. Utilizing new and previously published spectra, we present examples of how a number of illustrative absorption and emission features vary during the binary orbit. We identify spectral features associated with each component, calculate a new, double-lined spectroscopic binary orbit, and find masses of 7.1 +/- 1.2 M_sun for the bright supergiant and 30.0 +/- 2.1 M_sun for the hidden massive companion. Through tomographic reconstruction of the component spectra from the composite spectra, we confirm the O9.7 Ibpe spectral class of the bright supergiant and discover a B0.5 I spectrum associated with the hidden massive companion; however, we suggest that the latter is actually the spectrum of the photosphere of the accretion torus immediately surrounding the massive companion. We describe the complex nature of the mass loss flows from the system in the context of recent hydrodynamical models for beta Lyr, leading us to conclude RY Scuti has matter leaving the system in two ways: 1) a bipolar outflow from winds generated by the hidden massive companion, and 2) mass from the bright O9.7 Ibpe supergiant flowing from the region near the L2 point to fill out a large, dense circumbinary disk.     Kinematic Structure of H2 and [Fe II] in the Bipolar Planetary Nebula M 2-9

    We present high-dispersion long-slit IR spectra of the double-shell bipolar planetary nebula M 2-9 in the emission lines [Fe II] 16435 and H2 v=1--0 S(1) 21218. H2 spectra reveal for the first time the kinematic structure of the outer shell in M 2-9. Kinematics of the inner shell, traced by [Fe II], resemble those of optical lines like [N II]. [Fe II] and H2 shells have expansion speeds roughly proportional to distance from the star (``Hubble'' flows) and share the same dynamical age of 1200--2000 yr, depending on the distance to M 2-9. Thus, the inner ionized lobes and outer molecular lobes, as well as the molecular torus and ``outer loops'' measured by other observers, were all formed around the same time. Consequently, their nested structure likely arises from an excitation gradient rather than independent ejections. H2 and [Fe II] emission is distributed more uniformly than [N II], and IR lines are not dominated by the moving ionization pattern like visual-wavelength lines. We suggest that this is because IR lines of [Fe II] and H2 are excited by relatively isotropic far-UV radiation (Balmer continuum), whereas optical lines respond to a directed rotating beam of Lyman continuum.     Validation of test performance characteristics and minimal clinically important difference of the 6-minute walk test in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

    SummaryBackgroundThe 6-minute walk test distance (6MWD) has been shown to be a valid and responsive outcome measure in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The analyses were based, however, on a single phase 3 trial and require validation in an independent cohort.ObjectiveTo confirm the performance characteristics and estimates of minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of 6MWD in an independent cohort of patients with IPF.MethodsPatients randomized to placebo in the phase 3 CAPACITY trials who had a baseline 6MWD measurement were included in these analyses. The 6MWD and other functional parameters (lung function, dyspnea, and health-related quality of life) were measured at baseline and 24-week intervals. Validity and responsiveness were examined using Spearman correlation coefficients. The MCID was estimated using distribution- and anchor-based methods.ResultsThe analysis comprised 338 patients. Baseline 6MWD was significantly correlated with lung function measures, patient-reported outcomes, and quality-of-life measures (validity). Compared with baseline 6MWD, change in 6MWD (responsiveness) showed stronger correlations with change in lung function parameters and quality-of-life measures. Dyspnea measured by the University of California San Diego Shortness of Breath Questionnaire showed the strongest correlations with 6MWD (baseline: coefficient −0.35; 48-week change: coefficient −0.37; both p < 0.001). The distribution-based analyses of MCID using standard error of measurement yielded an MCID of 37 m, and distribution-based analyses by effect size resulted in 29.2 m. The MCID by anchor-based analysis using criterion referencing (health events of hospitalization or death) was 21.7 m.ConclusionsThe 6MWD is a valid and responsive clinical endpoint, which provides objective and clinically meaningful information regarding functional status and near-term prognosis. These results confirm previous findings in an independent cohort of patients with IPF
