Preosteoblast Cell Adhesion and Proliferation on Polycaprolactone (PCL) 3D Scaffolds with Hyaluronic Acid Nano Layer
Polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds have been widely used for bone tissue engineering. However, PCL is
not good due to the lack of cell recognition sites and hydrophobic surface. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan
that plays an important role in adhesion, migration and proliferation. The object of this
study is to fabricate the polymeric thin film in order to improving the preosteoblast cells adhesion and proliferation
on HA immobilized PCL scaffolds using amine plasma polymerization. HA immobilized PCL scaffold
showed no significant effect on preosteoblast cell attachment and proliferation.

Estimating the carbon dynamics of South Korean forests from 1954 to 2012
Forests play an important role in the global carbon (C) cycle, and the South Korean forests also contribute to this global C cycle. While the South Korean forest ecosystem was almost completely destroyed by exploitation and the Korean War, it has successfully recovered because of national-scale reforestation programs since 1973. There have been several studies on the estimation of C stocks and balances over the past decades in the South Korean forests. However, a retrospective long-term study that includes biomass and dead organic matter C and validates dead organic matter C is still lacking. Accordingly, we estimated the C stocks and their changes of both biomass and dead organic matter C during the 1954-2012 period using a process-based model, the Korean Forest Soil Carbon model, and the 5th South Korean national forest inventory (NFI) report. Validation processes were also conducted based on the 5th NFI and statistical data. Simulation results showed that the biomass C stocks increased from 36.4 to 440.4 Tg C at a rate of 7.0 Tg C yrg-1 during the period 1954-2012. The dead organic matter C stocks increased from 386.0 to 463.1 Tg C at a rate of 1.3 Tg C yrg-1 during the same period. The estimates of biomass and dead organic matter C stocks agreed well with observed C stock data. The annual net biome production (NBP) during the period 1954-2012 was 141.3 g C mg-2 yrg-1, which increased from ??'8.8 g C mg-2 yrg-1 in 1955 to 436.6 g C mg-2 yrg-1 in 2012. Because of the small forested area, the South Korean forests had a comparatively lower contribution to the annual C sequestration by global forests. In contrast, because of the extensive reforestation programs, the NBP of South Korean forests was much higher than those of other countries. Our results could provide the forest C dynamics in South Korean forests before and after the onset of reforestation programs.Korea Forest Service (S111314L100120, S111114L030100) and Korea Ministry of Environment (C314-00131-0408-0).Scopu

On the thin-shell limit of branes in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet interactions
In this paper we study thick-shell braneworld models in the presence of a
Gauss-Bonnet term. We discuss the peculiarities of the attainment of the
thin-shell limit in this case and compare them with the same situation in
Einstein gravity. We describe the two simplest families of thick-brane models
(parametrized by the shell thickness) one can think of. In the thin-shell
limit, one family is characterized by the constancy of its internal density
profile (a simple structure for the matter sector) and the other by the
constancy of its internal curvature scalar (a simple structure for the
geometric sector). We find that these two families are actually equivalent in
Einstein gravity and that the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term breaks this
equivalence. In the second case, a shell will always keep some non-trivial
internal structure, either on the matter or on the geometric sectors, even in
the thin-shell limit.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, RevTeX 4. Revised version accepted for

Enhanced production of tropane alkaloids in transgenic Scopolia parviflora hairy root cultures over-expressing putrescine N-methyl transferase (PMT) and hyoscyamine-6β-hydroxylase (H6H)
Scopolia parviflora adventitious roots were metabolically engineered by co-expression of the two gene putrescine N-methyl transferase (PMT) and hyoscyamine-6β-hydroxylase (H6H) cDNAs with the aid of Agrobacterium rhizogenes. The transformed roots developed into morphologically distinct S. parviflora PMT1 (SpPMT1), S. parviflora PMT1 (SpPMT2), and S. parviflora H6H (SpH6H) transgenic hairy root lines. Consequent to the introduction of these key enzyme genes, the production of the alkaloids hyoscyamine and scopolamine was enhanced. Among the transgenic hairy root lines, SpPMT2 line possessed the highest growth index. The treatment of transgenic hairy roots with growth regulators further enhanced the production of scopolamine. Thus, the results suggest that PMT1, PMT2, and H6H genes may not only be involved in the metabolic regulation of alkaloid production but also that these genes may play a role in the root development
Molecular epidemiology and genetic diversity of human astrovirus in South Korea from 2002 to 2007
AbstractThe present study was conducted to survey the prevalence and genotypic distribution of human astrovirus (HAstV) circulating in South Korea. Of 160,027 patients with acute gastroenteritis, 2,057 (1.3%) were positive for HAstV antigen. We determined the genotypes of 187 HAstV strains collected from laboratories across the country. Genetic analysis revealed genotype 1 to be the most prevalent, accounting for 72.19% of the strains, followed by genotypes 8 (9.63%), 6 (6.95%), 4 (6.42%), 2 (3.21%) and 3 (1.60%). Our findings indicate that HAstV is less common but, even so, a potentially important viral agent of gastroenteritis in South Korea, with significant genetic diversity among circulating HAstV strains
Fast-ion redistribution and loss due to edge perturbations in the ASDEX Upgrade, DIII-D and KSTAR tokamaks
The impact of edge localized modes (ELMs) and externally applied resonant and non-resonant magnetic perturbations
(MPs) on fast-ion confinement/transport have been investigated in the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), DIII-D and KSTAR
tokamaks. Two phases with respect to the ELM cycle can be clearly distinguished in ELM-induced fast-ion losses.
Inter-ELM losses are characterized by a coherent modulation of the plasma density around the separatrix while
intra-ELM losses appear as well-defined bursts. In high collisionality plasmas with mitigated ELMs, externally
applied MPs have little effect on kinetic profiles, including fast-ions, while a strong impact on kinetic profiles is
observed in low-collisionality, low

plasmas with resonant and non-resonant MPs. In low-collisionality H-mode
plasmas, the large fast-ion filaments observed during ELMs are replaced by a loss of fast-ions with a broad-band
frequency and an amplitude of up to an order of magnitude higher than the neutral beam injection prompt loss signal
without MPs. A clear synergy in the overall fast-ion transport is observed between MPs and neoclassical tearing
modes. Measured fast-ion losses are typically on banana orbits that explore the entire pedestal/scrape-off layer. The
fast-ion response to externally applied MPs presented here may be of general interest for the community to better
understand the MP field penetration and overall plasma response.Ministerio de Economía y Empresa ((RYC-2011-09152 y ENE2012-31087)Marie Curie (Grant PCIG11-GA-2012-321455)US Department of Energy (DE-FC02-04ER54698, SC-G903402, DE-FG02-04ER54761, DE-AC02-09CH11466 and DE-FG02- 08ER54984)NRF Korea contract 2009-0082012MEST under the KSTAR projec
Measurement of Trace I-129 Concentrations in CsI Powder and Organic Liquid Scintillator with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
Levels of trace radiopurity in active detector materials is a subject of
major concern in low-background experiments. Procedures were devised to measure
trace concentrations of I-129 in the inorganic salt CsI as well as in organic
liquid scintillator with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) which leads to
improvement in sensitivities by several orders of magnitude over other methods.
No evidence of their existence in these materials were observed. Limits of < 6
X 10^{-13} g/g and < 2.6 X 10^{-17} g/g on the contaminations of I-129 in CsI
and liquid scintillator, respectively, were derived. These are the first results
in a research program whose goals are to develop techniques to measure trace
radioactivity in detector materials by AMS.Comment: Proceedings of 10th International Conference on Accelerator Mass

Generalised Israel Junction Conditions for a Gauss-Bonnet Brane World
In spacetimes of dimension greater than four it is natural to consider higher
order (in R) corrections to the Einstein equations. In this letter generalized
Israel junction conditions for a membrane in such a theory are derived. This is
achieved by generalising the Gibbons-Hawking boundary term. The junction
conditions are applied to simple brane world models, and are compared to the
many contradictory results in the literature.Comment: 4 page
Brane cosmology with curvature corrections
We study the cosmology of the Randall-Sundrum brane-world where the
Einstein-Hilbert action is modified by curvature correction terms: a
four-dimensional scalar curvature from induced gravity on the brane, and a
five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet curvature term. The combined effect of these
curvature corrections to the action removes the infinite-density big bang
singularity, although the curvature can still diverge for some parameter
values. A radiation brane undergoes accelerated expansion near the minimal
scale factor, for a range of parameters. This acceleration is driven by the
geometric effects, without an inflaton field or negative pressures. At late
times, conventional cosmology is recovered.Comment: RevTex4, 8 pages, no figures, minor change
