Histological techniques for marine bivalve molluscs: update
This chapter describes the procedures for determining the reproductive stage of oysters, mytilid mussels, and dreissenid mussels collected for NOAA’s National Status and Trends Mussel Watch Project. Analyses are conducted on paraffin-embedded tissues sectioned at a 5-μm thickness and stained using a pentachrome staining procedure. Each slide is examined microscopically to determine the animal’s sex and stage of gonadal development. A semi-quantitative ranking is assigned
Validity of the Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics of the Universe Bounded by the Event Horizon in Holographic Dark Energy Model
In this letter, we investigate the validity of the generalized second law of
thermodynamics of the universe bounded by the event horizon in the holographic
dark energy model. The universe is chosen to be homogeneous and isotropic and
the validity of the first law has been assumed here. The matter in the universe
is taken in the form of non-interacting two fluid system- one component is the
holographic dark energy model and the other component is in the form of dust.Comment: 8 page
Change in fatty liver status and 5-year risk of incident metabolic syndrome: a retrospective cohort study
INTRODUCTION: Fatty liver is associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) but it may also occur without MetS. Whether resolution of fatty liver in the general population affects risk of MetS is unknown. Our aim was to determine whether a change in fatty liver status (either the development of new fatty liver or the resolution of existing fatty liver) would modify the risk of de novo MetS.METHODS:Two thousand eighty-nine people without hypertension, diabetes, and MetS were examined at baseline and at 5-year follow-up using a retrospective cohort study design. Fatty liver status was assessed at baseline and at follow-up by ultrasonography. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for de novo MetS at follow-up were calculated controlling for the potential confounders, compared to the reference group (people who never had fatty liver at baseline and follow-up).RESULTS:During follow-up, fatty liver developed in 251 people and fatty liver resolved in 112 people. After the adjustment for multiple confounders, persisting fatty liver and incident fatty liver development were associated with de novo MetS, with aHR of 2.60 (95 % CIs [1.61,4.20]) and 3.31 (95 % CIs [1.99,5.51]), respectively. Risk of new MetS in resolved fatty liver group was attenuated with insignificant aHR of 1.29 accompanying 95 % CIs of 0.60 and 2.80.DISCUSSION:Development or maintenance of fatty liver is positively associated with occurrence of new MetS. Resolution of fatty liver status has similar risk of de novo MetS with those who never had fatty liver. Therefore, cautious management is needed with those with fatty liver
Amplitude to phase conversion of InGaAs pin photo-diodes for femtosecond lasers microwave signal generation
When a photo-diode is illuminated by a pulse train from a femtosecond laser,
it generates microwaves components at the harmonics of the repetition rate
within its bandwidth. The phase of these components (relative to the optical
pulse train) is known to be dependent on the optical energy per pulse. We
present an experimental study of this dependence in InGaAs pin photo-diodes
illuminated with ultra-short pulses generated by an Erbium-doped fiber based
femtosecond laser. The energy to phase dependence is measured over a large
range of impinging pulse energies near and above saturation for two typical
detectors, commonly used in optical frequency metrology with femtosecond laser
based optical frequency combs. When scanning the optical pulse energy, the
coefficient which relates phase variations to energy variations is found to
alternate between positive and negative values, with many (for high harmonics
of the repetition rate) vanishing points. By operating the system near one of
these vanishing points, the typical amplitude noise level of commercial-core
fiber-based femtosecond lasers is sufficiently low to generate state-of-the-art
ultra-low phase noise microwave signals, virtually immune to amplitude to phase
conversion related noise.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Applied Physics
Scalar-Tensor Theory of Gravity and Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics on the Event Horizon
In blackhole physics, the second law of thermodynamics is generally valid
whether the blackhole is a static or a non-static one. Considering the universe
as a thermodynamical system the second law of blackhole dynamics extends to the
non-negativity of the sum of the entropy of the matter and the horizon, known
as generalized second law of thermodynamics(GSLT). Here, we have assumed the
universe to be bounded by the event-horizon or filled with perfect fluid and
holographic dark energy in two cases. Thus considering entropy to be an
arbitrary function of the area of the event-horizon, we have tried to find the
conditions and the restrictions over the scalar field and equation of state for
the validity of the GSLT and both in quintessence-era and in phantom-era in
scalar tensor theory.Comment: 8 page
Restoring New Agegraphic Dark Energy in RS II Braneworld
Motivated by recent works [1,2], we investigate new agegraphic model of dark
energy in the framework of RS II braneworld. We also include the case of
variable gravitational constant in our model. Furthermore, we establish
correspondence between the new agegraphic dark energy with other dark energy
candidates based on scalar fields.Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in IJT
Distinct cell proliferation events during abstinence after alcohol dependence: Microglia proliferation precedes neurogenesis
Excessive alcohol intake characteristic of Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs) produces neurodegeneration that may recover with abstinence. The mechanism of regeneration is unclear, however neurogenesis from neural stem/progenitor cells is a feasible mechanism of structural plasticity. Therefore, a timecourse of cell proliferation was examined in a rat model of an AUD and showed a striking burst in cell proliferation at 2 days of abstinence preceding the previously reported neurogenic proliferation at 7 days. New cells at 2 days, assessed by Bromo-deoxy-Uridine incorporation and endogenous markers, were observed throughout hippocampus and cortex. Although the majority of these new cells did not become neurons, neurogenesis was not altered at this specific timepoint. These new cells expressed a microglia specific marker, Iba-1, and survived at least 2 months. This first report of microglia proliferation in a model of an AUD suggests that microgliosis could contribute to volume recovery in non-neurogenic regions during abstinence
Feynman rules for effective Regge action
Starting from the gauge invariant effective action in the quasi-multi-Regge
kinematics (QMRK), we obtain the effective reggeized gluon (R) -- particle (P)
vertices of the following types: , , , , , and
, where the on-mass-shell particles are gluons, or sets of gluons with
small invariant masses. The explicit expressions satisfying the Bose-symmetry
and gauge invariance conditions are obtained. As a comment to the Feynman rules
for derivation of the amplitudes in terms of effective vertices we present a
``vocabulary'' for practitioners.Comment: REVTeX, 21 pages, 10 figure
Statefinder diagnostic and stability of modified gravity consistent with holographic and new agegraphic dark energy
Recently one of us derived the action of modified gravity consistent with the
holographic and new-agegraphic dark energy. In this paper, we investigate the
stability of the Lagrangians of the modified gravity as discussed in [M. R.
Setare, Int. J. Mod. Phys. D 17 (2008) 2219; M. R. Setare, Astrophys. Space
Sci. 326 (2010) 27]. We also calculate the statefinder parameters which
classify our dark energy model.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, accepted by Gen. Relativ. Gravi
