Scaling and finte-size-scaling in the two dimensional random-coupling Ising ferromagnet
It is shown by Monte Carlo method that the finite size scaling (FSS) holds in
the two dimensional random-coupled Ising ferromagnet. It is also demonstrated
that the form of universal FSS function constructed via novel FSS scheme
depends on the strength of the random coupling for strongly disordered cases.
Monte Carlo measurements of thermodynamic (infinite volume limit) data of the
correlation length () up to along with measurements of
the fourth order cumulant ratio (Binder's ratio) at criticality are reported
and analyzed in view of two competing scenarios. It is demonstrated that the

Critical Behaviour of Non-Equilibrium Phase Transitions to Magnetically Ordered States
We describe non-equilibrium phase transitions in arrays of dynamical systems
with cubic nonlinearity driven by multiplicative Gaussian white noise.
Depending on the sign of the spatial coupling we observe transitions to
ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic ordered states. We discuss the phase
diagram, the order of the transitions, and the critical behaviour. For global
coupling we show analytically that the critical exponent of the magnetization
exhibits a transition from the value 1/2 to a non-universal behaviour depending
on the ratio of noise strength to the magnitude of the spatial coupling.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Ractopamine-induced changes in the proteome of post-mortem beef longissimus lumborum muscle
Ractopamine is a beta-adrenergic agonist that is approved for use in beef cattle, pigs and turkeys as a repartitioning agent to increase lean muscle deposition and decrease lipogenesis. Although the effects of dietary ractopamine on the proteome profile of post-mortem pork muscles have been examined, its influence on beef muscle proteome has not been studied. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the effect of ractopamine on the proteome profile of post-mortem beef longissimus lumborum (LL) muscle. LL muscle samples were obtained from the carcasses of six (n = 6) steers fed ractopamine (RAC; 400 mg ractopamine hydrochloride for 28 days) and six (n = 6) steers fed no ractopamine (CON). The muscle proteome was analysed using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and tandem mass spectrometry. Five differentially abundant spots were identified, and all the spots were over-abundant in RAC. The identified proteins were involved in muscle structure development (F-actin-capping protein subunit beta-2; PDZ and LIM domain protein-3), chaperone activity (heat shock protein beta-1), oxygen transport (myoglobin), and glycolysis (L-lactate dehydrogenase A chain). These results suggested that dietary ractopamine could influence the abundance of enzymes associated with muscle development and muscle fibre type shift in beef LL muscle.Keywords: growth promotants, meat quality, proteomic
Accountability for the human right to health through treaty monitoring: Human rights treaty bodies and the influence of concluding observations
Employing novel coding methods to evaluate human rights monitoring, this article examines the influence of United Nations (UN) treaty bodies on national implementation of the human right to health. The advancement of the right to health in the UN human rights system has shifted over the past 20 years from the development of norms under international law to the implementation of those norms through national policy. Facilitating accountability for this rights-based policy implementation under the right to health, the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) monitors state implementation by reviewing periodic reports from state parties, engaging in formal sessions of ‘constructive dialogue’ with state representatives, and issuing concluding observations for state response. These concluding observations recognise the positive steps taken by states and highlight the principal areas of CESCR concern, providing recommendations for implementing human rights and detailing issues to be addressed in the next state report. Through analytic coding of the normative indicators of the right to health in both state reports and concluding observations, this article provides an empirical basis to understand the policy effects of the CESCR monitoring process on state implementation of the right to health
Universality in two-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang growth
We analyze simulations results of a model proposed for etching of a
crystalline solid and results of other discrete models in the 2+1-dimensional
Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class. In the steady states, the moments W_n of
orders n=2,3,4 of the heights distribution are estimated. Results for the
etching model, the ballistic deposition (BD) model and the
temperature-dependent body-centered restricted solid-on-solid model (BCSOS)
suggest the universality of the absolute value of the skewness S = W_3 /
(W_2)^(3/2) and of the value of the kurtosis Q = W_4 / (W_2)^2 - 3. The sign of
the skewness is the same of the parameter \lambda of the KPZ equation which
represents the process in the continuum limit. The best numerical estimates,
obtained from the etching model, are |S| = 0.26 +- 0.01 and Q = 0.134 +- 0.015.
For this model, the roughness exponent \alpha = 0.383 +- 0.008 is obtained,
accounting for a constant correction term (intrinsic width) in the scaling of
the squared interface width. This value is slightly below previous estimates of
extensive simulations and rules out the proposal of the exact value \alpha=2/5.
The conclusion is supported by results for the ballistic deposition model.
Independent estimates of the dynamical exponent and of the growth exponent are
1.605 <= z <= 1.64 and \beta = 0.229 +- 0.005, respectively, which are
consistent with the relations \alpha + z = 2 and z = \alpha / \beta.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Crossover and self-averaging in the two-dimensional site-diluted Ising model
Using the newly proposed probability-changing cluster (PCC) Monte Carlo
algorithm, we simulate the two-dimensional (2D) site-diluted Ising model. Since
we can tune the critical point of each random sample automatically with the PCC
algorithm, we succeed in studying the sample-dependent and the sample
average of physical quantities at each systematically. Using the
finite-size scaling (FSS) analysis for , we discuss the importance of
corrections to FSS both in the strong-dilution and weak-dilution regions. The
critical phenomena of the 2D site-diluted Ising model are shown to be
controlled by the pure fixed point. The crossover from the percolation fixed
point to the pure Ising fixed point with the system size is explicitly
demonstrated by the study of the Binder parameter. We also study the
distribution of critical temperature . Its variance shows the power-law
dependence, , and the estimate of the exponent is consistent
with the prediction of Aharony and Harris [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 77}, 3700
(1996)]. Calculating the relative variance of critical magnetization at the
sample-dependent , we show that the 2D site-diluted Ising model

Generalized measurements by linear elements
I give a first characterization of the class of generalized measurements that
can be exactly realized on a pair of qudits encoded in indistinguishable
particles, by using only linear elements and particle detectors. Two immediate
results follow from this characterization. (i) The Schmidt number of each POVM
element cannot exceed the number of initial particles. This rules out any
possibility of performing perfect Bell-measurements for qudits. (ii) The
maximum probability of performing a generalized incomplete Bell-measurement is

A pseudo-spectral method for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation
We discuss a numerical scheme to solve the continuum Kardar-Parisi-Zhang
equation in generic spatial dimensions. It is based on a momentum-space
discretization of the continuum equation and on a pseudo-spectral approximation
of the non-linear term. The method is tested in (1+1)- and (2+1)- dimensions,
where it is shown to reproduce the current most reliable estimates of the
critical exponents based on Restricted Solid-on-Solid simulations. In
particular it allows the computations of various correlation and structure
functions with high degree of numerical accuracy. Some deficiencies which are
common to all previously used finite-difference schemes are pointed out and the
