Eulogy

Particular to the three short stories in Eulogyis the importance of place, as they are set in the fictional location of Potter’s Island, which is based on my childhood sense of Florida.Contradictions, complications, and disappointments can be uniquely tied to a sense of place. My own parents and grandparents moved to Florida when I was three years old, but where they lived, how they lived and worked, and what dreams they pursued was only partially an immigrant’s story of wanting a better life. The past has weight—a weight that must be dealt with, for real people, and for the characters in my stories. Charlie Dunham, a new retiree who has recently moved to Island Circle, finds out that the idea of starting over sometimes ends up in the reality of being rootless and unable to flourish, despite all the right conditions for regrowth. Clementine Asher, a fourth grader who buries the road kill she finds on her way home from school in a burned out Florida pine forest, has to meet her past head on when her missing father shows up after leaving his family desperate and struggling to survive. And Dodie, whose family is always on the run from trouble, has to find a way to balance family loyalty and the need for self-survival

On-Chip Cavity Optomechanical Coupling

On-chip cavity optomechanics, in which strong co-localization of light and mechanical motion is engineered, relies on efficient coupling of light both into and out of the on-chip optical resonator. Here we detail our particular style of tapered and dimpled optical fibers, pioneered by the Painter group at Caltech, which are a versatile and reliable solution to efficient on-chip coupling. First, a brief overview of tapered, single mode fibers is presented, in which the single mode cutoff diameter is highlighted. The apparatus used to create a dimpled tapered fiber is then described, followed by a comprehensive account of the procedure by which a dimpled tapered fiber is produced and mounted in our system. The custom-built optical access vacuum chambers in which our on-chip optomechanical measurements are performed are then discussed. Finally, the process by which our optomechanical devices are fabricated and the method by which we explore their optical and mechanical properties is explained. It is our expectation that this manuscript will enable the novice to develop advanced optomechanical experiments.Comment: 31 pages, 9 figure

This Act is meant to create a means by which a victim’s rights, as introduced by the constitutional amendment in SR 146, may be raised or enforced

Curvature of Multiply Warped Products

In this paper, we study Ricci-flat and Einstein Lorentzian multiply warped products. We also consider the case of having constant scalar curvatures for this class of warped products. Finally, after we introduce a new class of spacetimes called as generalized Kasner space-times, we apply our results to this kind of space-times as well as other relativistic space-times, i.e., Reissner-Nordstrom, Kasner space-times, Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli and de Sitter Black hole solutions.Comment: 28 pages, corrected typos, to appear in Journal of Geometry and Physic

A partial resolution of Hedden's conjecture on satellite homomorphisms

A pattern knot in a solid torus defines a self-map of the smooth knot concordance group. We prove that if the winding number of a pattern is even but not divisible by 8, then the corresponding map is not a homomorphism, thus partially establishing a conjecture of Hedden.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

Online Financial Education Programs: Theory, Research, and Recommendations

Technological advances have created unprecedented opportunities for online financial education that can be used to improve financial literacy and money management practices. While online financial education programs have become popular, relevant research and theoretical frameworks have rarely been considered in the development of such programs. This article synthesizes lessons from literature and theories for the development of an effective online financial education program. Drawing from literature on financial literacy education and online education, implications and recommendations for integrating technology into online financial education programs for adults are discussed

“Así No Iré a la Cárcel”: Segundo Año del Programa Adaptado de PROMUNDO para Erradicar la Violencia Sexista

This paper presents evaluation results of a PROMUNDO-adapted program enacted to reduce gender-based violence among preadolescent boys.  Outcomes that are examined include promoting critical thinking regarding masculinity, aggression, and violence; fostering skills necessary for effective communication, prosocial emotional expression, and non-violent conflict resolution.  While quantitative findings in this small sample do not indicate statistically significant results, qualitative analyses indicate that participants were better equipped to express their emotions, particularly anger, and to resolve conflict in non-violent ways that may slow the school-to-prison pipeline.Este artículo presenta los resultados de evaluación de un programa adaptado de PROMUNDO, promovido para reducir la violencia sexista entre chicos preadolescentes. Es la continuación de un estudio piloto anterior del currículum del programa. Los resultados examinados incluyen fomentar el pensamiento crítico respecto a la masculinidad, la agresión y la violencia; fomentando las habilidades necesarias para la comunicación efectiva, la expresión de emociones prosocial y la resolución de conflictos de forma no violenta.
