    Fragmented Securities Regulation, Information-Processing Costs, and Insider Trading

    Using a unique setting where stand-alone banks submit filings to bank regulators instead of the SEC, we examine the consequences of fragmented securities regulation on information-processing costs and opportunistic insider trading. We find the market reaction to insider-trading filings on FDICconnect is less timely than to those on SEC EDGAR, suggesting FDICconnect generates higher information-processing costs. We also find only large investors trade more on insider-trading filings on FDICconnect than on those on SEC EDGAR, thus extracting benefits from the delayed market reaction to insider-trading filings on FDICconnect. Finally, we find increased insider selling in stand-alone banks prior to public announcements of banks’ enforcement actions and negative earnings news, suggesting insiders’ opportunistic use of private information. These findings collectively suggest regulatory fragmentation undermines market efficiency and distorts the level playing field

    Current Expected Credit Losses (CECL) Standard and Banks’ Information Production

    We examine whether the adoption of the current expected credit losses (CECL) model, which reflects forward-looking information in loan loss provisions, improves banks’ information production. We find that CECL adopting banks’ loan loss provisions are timelier and better reflect future local economic conditions. Consistent with these outcomes resulting from better information production, we find that CECL adopting banks have fewer loan defaults and disclose more forward-looking information after adopting CECL. In addition, the improvement in the quality of loan loss provisions is greater for banks that invest more in CECL-related information systems and human capital, a plausible channel for improved information production. Finally, CECL adopters’ lending becomes less sensitive to economic uncertainty. Our findings suggest that banks benefit from better information quality by adopting a more forward-looking accounting standard

    Synthesis and Thermoelectric Characterization of Lead Telluride Hollow Nanofibers

    Lead telluride (PbTe) nanofibers were fabricated by galvanic displacement of electrospun cobalt nanofibers where their composition and morphology were altered by adjusting the electrolyte composition and diameter of sacrificial cobalt nanofibers. By employing Co instead of Ni as the sacrificial material, residue-free PbTe nanofibers were synthesized. The Pb content of the PbTe nanofibers was slightly affected by the Pb2+ concentration in the electrolyte, while the average outer diameter increased with Pb2+ concentration. The surface morphology of PbTe nanofibers was strongly dependent on the diameter of sacrificial nanofibers where it altered from smooth to rough surface as the Pb2+ concentration increased. Some of thermoelectric properties [i.e., thermopower (S) and electrical conductivity(σ)] were systematically measured as a function of temperature. Energy barrier height (Eb) was found to be one of the key factors affecting the thermoelectric properties–that is, higher energy barrier heights increased the Seebeck coefficient, but lowered the electrical conductivity

    Tai Chi for Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms and Quality of Life in Elderly Patients with Benign Prostate Hypertrophy: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    Tai chi exercise has been recommended as suitable for the improvement of health in the elderly. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of tai chi on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs), quality of life (QoL), and sex hormone levels in patients with benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH). The elderly patients with BPH were randomized to receive tai chi or usual care. Fifty-six participants were randomized into either the tai chi group (n = 28) or the control group (n = 28). After 12 weeks of treatment, the tai chi group showed significant improvement in LUTS and QoL. There was a significant effect of tai chi on testosterone but no significant effect on insulin or glucose. No serious adverse events were observed during the study period. In conclusion, our results suggest that 12 weeks of tai chi may improve LUTS and QoL in elderly patients with BPH

    Co-culturing a novel Bacillus strain with Clostridium tyrobutyricum ATCC 25755 to produce butyric acid from sucrose

    Background: Currently, the most promising microorganism used for the bio-production of butyric acid is Clostridium tyrobutyricum ATCC 25755(T); however, it is unable to use sucrose as a sole carbon source. Consequently, a newly isolated strain, Bacillus sp. SGP1, that was found to produce a levansucrase enzyme, which hydrolyzes sucrose into fructose and glucose, was used in a co-culture with this strain, permitting C. tyrobutyricum ATCC 25755(T) to ferment sucrose to butyric acid. Results: B. sp. SGP1 alone did not show any butyric acid production and the main metabolite produced was lactic acid. This allowed C. tyrobutyricum ATCC 25755(T) to utilize the monosaccharides resulting from the activity of levansucrase together with the lactic acid produced by B. sp. SGP1 to generate butyric acid, which was the main fermentative product within the co-culture. Furthermore, the final acetic acid concentration in the co-culture was significantly lower when compared with pure C. tyrobutyricum ATCC 25755(T) cultures grown on glucose. In fed-batch fermentations, the optimum conditions for the production of butyric acid were around pH 5.50 and a temperature of 37 degrees C. Under these conditions, the final butyrate concentration was 34.2 +/- 1.8 g/L with yields of 0.35 +/- 0.03 g (butyrate)/g (sucrose) and maximum productivity of 0.3 +/- 0.04 g/L/h. Conclusions: Using this co-culture, sucrose can be utilized as a carbon source for butyric acid production at a relatively high yield. In addition, this co-culture offers also the benefit of a greater selectivity, with butyric acid constituting 92.8% of the acids when the fermentation was terminated.open2

    Characteristics of P wave in Patients with Sinus Rhythm after Maze Operation

    Maze operation could alter P wave morphology in electrocardiogram (ECG), which might prevent exact diagnosis of the cardiac rhythm of patients. However, characteristics of P wave in patients with sinus rhythm after the operation have not been elucidated systematically. Consecutive patients who underwent the modified Cox Maze operation from January to December 2007 were enrolled. The standard 12-lead ECG and echocardiography were evaluated in patients who had sinus rhythm at 6 months after the operation. The average axis of P wave was 65±30 degrees. The average amplitude of P wave was less than 0.1 mV in all 12-leads, with highest amplitude in V1. The most common morphology of P wave was monophasic with positive polarity (49%), except aVR lead, which was different from those in patients with enlarged left atrium, characterized by large P-terminal force in the lead V1. There were no significant differences in P-wave characteristics and echocardiographic parameters between patients with LA activity (30.6%) versus without LA activity (69.4%) at 6 months after the operation. In conclusion, the morphology of P wave in patients after Maze operation shows loss of typical ECG pattern of P mitrale: P wave morphology is small in amplitude, monophasic and with positive polarity
